Small Cell Market Forecast

60% of operators believe that small cells will be more
important than macrocells for an effective LTE deployment
strategy. - FemtoForum, Femtocell Market Status, June 2011

Strong growth in enterprise sector, a third of femtocell

deployments now include enterprise offerings, will reach just
under 49 million femtocell access points in the market by 2014,

Whats most important for Small Cell sites?

All of the above (the site, the radio and the backhaul)

However;
The radio is being commoditized
A lot of effort is going into new radio development

The radio price is begin driven down by the competition

and open standards

So what's as important then?

The site - as always

And the "new" "broadband" backhaul
higher data speeds
lower total cost of ownership
carrier-grade reliability

p. 14

What exactly is the backhaul issue?

Cost, cost, cost
OPEX for backhaul for a small cell site is more than CAPEX
Assume $10k for CAPEX (including the small cell itself, cell site
acquisition, construction and permitting costs)
$325/month 5 Mbps bus-class backhaul (adds up to $20k
OPEX in 5 years)

Current classes of bandwidth not adequate

LTE needs to support 128 Mbps+ per sector ...
Availability and Cost
Fiber can be too expensive (trenching) and takes time (permits)

Support
Fixing a failure requires more work and permits
