Course Description
Design, Multimedia, and Web Technologies/Programming (Web Design)
is a two-year, 3-period program designed to offer the tools and skills students
need to succeed in today’s high-technology marketplace.
Instruction includes:
• Developing proficiency in Web programming specifically HyperText
Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS),
Dreamweaver CS3, CGI Programming, and Javascript.
• Incorporating principles of layout and design in completing Web and
desktop-published projects.
• Developing real-world business programming and application
development skills using current web enabled application languages
• Refining analytical and advanced-level computer skills through
innovative projects using the Internet, programming languages,
multimedia/animation software, audio and video capture devices.
• Planning, defining and using databases.
• Refining presentation skills and designing Web-development portfolios.
• Demonstrating an understanding of business ethics, copyright laws,
computer crimes and privacy issues.
• Developing leadership and team-building skills through student
organization (Future Business Leaders of America - FBLA) activities and
small-group projects.

Job Outlook
Computer-related occupations (Web developers, programmers, database
administrators, network administrators, help desk professionals, digital media
specialists, and technical support technicians) will account for 8 out of the
20 fastest growing occupations in Virginia during this decade. Job prospects
in the Information Technology (IT) field will be excellent for students who
can combine strong educational and technical skills with good interpersonal
and business skills. Graduates of this course are encouraged to pursue post-
secondary associate/baccalaureate degrees in IT/Computer Science programs
of study or technical programs leading to industry certification.
• This program is offered only at Hermitage Technical Center.
• Students may participate in a technical internship in the
community, if selected.
• Completion of this program includes opportunity for
students to receive CIW Associate Design Specialist industry
certification.
