SECTION B SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (30 marks)

Question 1 (10 marks)
Mazlan is a 68-year-old retiree who had suffered from Type II diabetes mellitus since he
was in his late 30s. He is currently admitted to your ward for wound infection over his left
foot after he stepped on a broken glass three weeks ago at the park. You noticed that he
appeared to be downcast. He was told by his team doctor that his wound is no longer
responding to the wound debridement and may soon require a below knee amputation.
Mazlan is married with no children and stays with his wife in a rented HDB flat. Premorbid status, Mazlan is a community ambulant without any aid.
(a)

Identify FOUR (4) potential challenges faced by Mazlan when he is being


discharged from the hospital. Provide rationales for each challenge. (4 marks)

(b)

One week after his admission to the hospital, Mazlan is going for a left below knee
amputation. Discuss the coping process which might happen after Mazlan has
been discharged from the hospital. (6 marks)

Question 2 (12 marks)


Social Cognitive Theory consists of 6 concepts. They are reciprocal determinism,
behavioural capability, expectations, self-efficacy, observational learning and
reinforcements. Briefly define each of these six concepts and elaborate on potential
change strategies you could apply to promote each of these six concepts. (12 marks)

Question 3 (8 marks)
John is 35 years old and has been a smoker for the past 15 years. However, recently he
has been suffering from some breathing difficulties and the doctor has advised him to
stop smoking. As a result of the doctors advice, he has been gradually reducing the
number of cigarettes he has been smoking and he intends to quit smoking within the
next five days.
(a)

According to Prochaska and DiClementes (1983) Transtheoretical model of


change, which stage is John currently in? Explain why you selected your answer?

(b)

As a healthcare professional, use the Transtheoretical model of change to assist


John to permanently quit smoking? (6 marks)
