=================================================
IDT Binary Changes:
6224 Latest validated release
Release Notes:
Configuration Changes (All platforms):

- Bug fixed: Enabling Dolby on the SPDIF endpoint causes the master
-

mute function to stop working.

o IDT PCA-1493
Line In endpoint now works correctly on all platforms/OSes.
o IDT PCA-2223
Audio now correctly reroutes from rear panel speakers to
headphones in the middle of an audio stream.
o ICT PCAT-1571

Known Issues and Limitations

Win 7:

- Dolby menu options only appear after the endpoint has been

activated by plugging into the appropriate jack.

o This is a partial bug fix and improvement over previous
behavior, wherein Dolby options would only appear after the
endpoint was activated, then the GUI rebooted. A full fix
to expose Dolby options at all times is currently being
scheduled.
o IDT PCA-2136 (Also on Vista)
When default endpoint is changed, previous default endpoint is
indicated (by blue highlighting) as well as the new endpoint until
the GUI is reopened.
o IDT PCA-2268 (Also on Vista)
Cannot set RTC endpoint as default endpoint
o IDT PCA-2269 (Only on Win7)
Sporadic bug, still under investigation: Unplugging RTC HP during
RTC stream with RTC-configured player will crash IDT audio. Only
seen right after installation.
o IDT PCA-2270 (Only on Win7)

Vista:

- See two bugs under Win7 section.

XP:

Working as designed: The master volume slider may seem to not

affect both SPDIF devices in EL2 model, however, there are
actually two master sliders to control the main stream and another
to control the RTC endpoint (on which SPDIF2 resides). The second
master volume slider can be accessed by selecting IDTAudio2 from
the Device pulldown on the volume tab of the IDTGUI.
o This information has also been amended to the intended
behavior section at the end of this document.
o IDT PCAT-1611

IDT is working to reproduce a bug that causes audio to stop

working. Any input that you can provide regarding reproducible
steps related to this bug would be very helpful in delivering a
quick solution.
o IDT PCA-1038
Intel-reported bug #160: RTC HP and the EQ
o This issue is a byproduct of the current RTC design and the
FFT/EQ display. When the GUI is running FFT/EQ display, it
creates a stream which is looped back to the GUI. The idea
is that the GUI needs to be able to listen to the playing
stream. In addition, when the RTC endpoint is streaming,
whichever endpoint the RTC is sharing a *port* with will
have to be pre-empted so the RTC stream can be played
through the port. When the RTC endpoint stops streaming,
then the other endpoint will resume streaming. Because of
the above requirements, displaying RTC endpoint FFT/EQ
display will hijack the currently playing musing on the
other endpoint (i.e. speaker).
o IDT PCA-521

XP:

The IDT speaker setup GUI displays all speakers (up to 7.1) that
are plugged in despite the user's selection of another speaker

2008-09-25 v130_Intel_EL_6087XPV_RC_AUS_W.zip
=================================================
IDT Binary Changes:
6087.0 Dolby certified implementation; Microsoft WHQL certified
Configuration Changes (All platforms):
Vista:
- Fixed: Input Monitor slider is exposed in the Stereo Mix endpoint
in the IDT GUI, PCAUD54940
- Fixed: Devices disabled from MS GUI can be re-enabled from IDTGUI;
but the string currently displays **IDS_DEFAULT_ENABLE it
should be Enable this device and will be fixed in the next
release.
- Fixed: Applying high gains for a high level input signal (from
line-in or other capture devices) for stereo mix or input monitor
can potentially cause distortion in recording or playback. Both
stereo mix recording and input monitoring feature involves three
different stages of volume controls. In a more extreme (and rare)
case where three (or even two) volume controls are set high while
input source already has a higher volume, users can potentially
over-amplify the input signal and cause distortion in its
recording or playback activities. Such behavior is actually
working as designed. IDT may provide alternate solution to prevent
such behavior being exposed to end users. However, it is believed
by IDT that the current implementation gives the user the most
flexibility in creating their audio and thus recommend against any
change. PCAUD55018
- Fixed: Inconsistency in Digital Input Monitor behaviors (i.e.
Line-In monitoring function is reportedly switched off after
disable and re-enable DIM.) This was reportedly observed a few
times on Skyberg platform and its under investigation (IDT
internal defect PCAUD52252)

Fixed: (related to issue above) Unable to switch between capture

device endpoints if digital input monitor function is already
started on another endpoint.
Fixed : Speaker illustration for HP did not change back to
Speakers after HP is unplugged (#125) PCA-488, scheduled for

Known Issues and Limitations

Vista:
- Input Monitor slider is exposed in the Stereo Mix endpoint in the
IDT GUI, PCAUD54940
- Spreader must be bypassed to pass Dolby Spruce certification
- Unable to switch between capture device endpoints if digital input
monitor function is already started on another endpoint
- Inconsistency in Digital Input Monitor behaviors (i.e. Line-In
monitoring function is reportedly switched off after disable and
re-enable DIM.) This was reportedly observed a few times on
Skyberg platform and its under investigation (IDT internal defect
PCAUD52252)
- Applying high gains for a high level input signal (from line-in or
other capture devices) for stereo mix or input monitor can
potentially cause distortion in recording or playback. Both stereo
mix recording and input monitoring feature involves three
different stages of volume controls. In a more extreme (and rare)
case where three (or even two) volume controls are set high while
input source already has a higher volume, users can potentially
over-amplify the input signal and cause distortion in its
recording or playback activities. Such behavior is actually
working as designed. IDT may provide alternate solution to prevent
such behavior being exposed to end users. However, it is believed
by IDT that the current implementation gives the user the most
flexibility in creating their audio and thus recommend against any
change. PCAUD55018
- Devices disabled from MS GUI can be re-enabled from IDTGUI; but
the string currently displays **IDS_DEFAULT_ENABLE it should
be Enable this device and will be fixed in the next release.

IDT Driver, APO, GUI & Windows Behaviors

########################################################################
A. IDT Spreader
The spreader is a plugin that maximizes the user listening experience
based on the arrangement of speakers connected, the multichannel audio
content of the media being played, and the OS speaker settings.
Spreader action is based on:
Jack presence (speakers connected)
Media playing (channel activity)
OS Speaker setting (Kmixer)
For example:
When an mp3 file is playing over 7.1 speakers
Without the spreader, the mp3 would only render from the front left and
front right speakers.
With the spreader, the mp3 is rendered from all 7.1 speakers.
Note: Spreader is not expected to carry out channel downmix or channel
upmix when an invalid speaker setup is attempted (i.e. setting up for
only rear and C/LFE speakers without the front).
B. IDT Speaker Manager
The speaker manager's primary job is to generate test tones. When a user
clicks a speaker in StacGui, the speaker manager should output an unmodified sound to the speakers.
C. Gui1.8 Hardware Speaker Configuration (XP)
System Speaker Configuration is updated when jack connection status
changes.
1. When connecting front speaker jack only, system speaker configuration
is updated automatically to "Desktop Stereo" for XP and "Stereo" for
Vista
2. When connecting front speaker jack and C/LFE jack, system speaker
configuration is updated automatically to 5.1 Surround
3. When connecting front speaker jack and rear speaker jack, system
speaker configuration is updated automatically to Quad
4. When connecting all 5.1 or 7.1 speaker jacks, system speaker
configuration is updated automatically to 5.1 or 7.1
5. In all other combination, speaker configuration is seen as invalid
and system speaker configuration would not be updated
D. GUI2.0 Software Speaker Configuration (Vista)

Speaker configuration dropdown menu is exposed on IDTGUI. The choice in

speaker configuration dropdown menu reflects the system speaker
configuration (also seen in Microsoft Audio Control panel) and vice
versa.
E. Digital volume control and SPDIF playback
The digital volume control slider and mute controls output volume level
for the Digital PCM formats. This includes all sample rates and bit
depths available from the driver.
The digital volume control slider and mute controls DO NOT control preencoded digital formats, such as AC3 and WMA when direct digital
endpoint links are established by the playback application.
F. Microsoft SP1 filter and IDT driver installation
Regarding Vista SP1 Update:
Microsoft appears to be applying a filter to prohibit a Windows Update
installation of SP1 to all audio vendors who load additional
applications or use a co-installer with their driver.
Workaround of this problem:
A. Driver re-installation after SP1 upgrade
1. Ensure having a local copy of audio driver
2. Uninstall audio currently resides on the system
3. Update Vista to SP1 via WU (Windows Update)
4. Re-install the same audio driver
B. Download SP1 and install

G. GUI2.0 Multi-Channel trim control (the blue dot)
This control is designed to provide a simple interactive method of
adjusting the relative levels. Its operation is relatively obvious,
moving the dot closer to a speaker biases the trim level toward that
speaker. There are tradeoffs that have to be made to map a 7 dimensional
problem to 2 dimensions. A number of algorithms had been evaluated and
the current algorithm offered on GUI2.0 was chosen because it provides
the smoothest variations when used interactively. It performs best
toward the center, but the results for corner cases are not necessarily
a precise solution. The balance slider, also available, on GUI2.0 is
available for users requiring precise control for extreme adjustments.

H. Windows XP CD Playback Behavior

Windows itself (independent of Media Player) supports 2 modes of music
CD playback:
A. Analog Mode
Analog cable from the CD drivers analog output to an (codec)
analog mixers input. This doesnt involve software at all, with
the exception of controlling CD input volume/mute on the mixer.
B. Digital Mode
Software emulation of the above cable, done by a Microsoft kernel
driver Redbook.sys. Rebook reads a sound track from the CD and
forwards the data to a playback stream it has opened on the audio
device. In this case, the data are supplied to the DAC by the
audio driver and the output of the DAC is again connected to an
analog mixers input.
The user is given an option of switching between the 2 modes by opening
Properties for CD driver in the Device Manager and switching the Enable
Digital CD playback checkbox. With Windows XP SP2, the digital mode is
chosen by Windows as default while the analog mode is default on Win2K.
Obviously, the analog mode will only work when the cable is present.
Media Player also supports 2 modes of music CD playback:
A. Analog
WMP uses Windows facility to play CD. It will be used in whatever
mode (digital or analog, see above) it is configured.
B. Digital
WMP reads tracks directly from the CD, completely bypassing
Windows facility (Redbook or analog cable). In this mode, it
doesnt matter how the Windows facility is configured.
The user is given an option of switching between the 2 modes in:
Options->Devices->Audio CD->Properties in WMP.
The described CD playback behaviors can be summarized as below.

2. Input-Monitor

(path 3)
Path 1: Windows Media Player read tracks directly from the CD,
completely bypassing Windows facility. The configuration (analog or
digital) of Windows CD is dont care.
Path 2: Microsoft kernel driver, REDBOOK.SYS, reads sound tracks from
CD and forwards data to a playback stream. Playback stream is supplied
to codec DAC and playback by audio driver.
Path 3: True analog path. CD audio is transmitted over analog cable
between CD drives analog output and codec CD-In input. This doesnt
involve software at all, with exception of controlling CD input
volume/mute on the mixer. Since HD Audio codec does not have a input
mixer, CD audio is playback at codec output through the utilization of
input monitor or digital input monitor. Thus, the control of CD volume
is available at CD volume in recording or (digital) input monitor in
playback panel. Note: Analog CD is NOT hardware-designed on Intel
Eagle Lake platforms, and thus this true analog path does not exist.
However, CD-Player or CD Volume would still appear on Windows and
IDT playback mixer panel because of the existence of path 2 (see above)
where Windows digital CD is still supported.

I.

Amendments for behaviors that are working as designed:

PHardware vs. Software speaker configurations: The hardware

speaker configuration working as designed; the jack
configuration that is setup by the jack selection overrides the
speaker dropdown to ensure the user does not lose content or
have silent speakers. Software speaker configuration has many
problems in XP that were not fixed when Intel agreed to switch
to hardware configuration last year and there have not been any
plans made to fix the issues with software speaker config.
[PCA-1337]

Rear Mic and Line-In can not work simultaneously because they
share same ADC (1), while the front mic uses a dedicated ADC
(2).

With volume at 0 (unity gain), there will still be audio

recorded. To fully mute the recording, use the mute button.

When a user connects headphones to the RTC endpoint, the GUI

will not show headphones on the RTC endpoint till the GUI is
opened and closed to refresh it.

The master volume slider may seem to not affect both SPDIF
devices in EL2 model, however, there are actually two master
sliders to control the main stream and another to control the
RTC endpoint (on which SPDIF2 resides). The second master
volume slider can be accessed by selecting IDTAudio2 from the
Device pulldown on the volume tab of the IDTGUI.
