JUAN LUNA

Juan Luna y Novicio (October 23, 1857 December 7, 1899) was a Filipino painter, sculptor and a
political activist of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century. He became one of the first
recognized Philippine artists.
His winning the gold medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Arts, along with the silver win of
fellow Filipino painter Flix Resurreccin Hidalgo, prompted a celebration which was a major
highlight in the memoirs of members of the Propaganda Movement, with the
fellow Ilustrados toasting to the two painters' good health and to the brotherhood between Spain and
the Philippines.

SPOLIARIUM
The Spoliarium (often misspelled Spolarium) is a painting by Filipino artist Juan Luna. The painting
was submitted by Luna to the Exposicin Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, where it
garnered the first gold medal (out of three). In 1886, it was sold to the Diputacin Provincial de
Barcelona for 20,000 pesetas. It currently hangs in the main gallery at the ground floor of
the National Museum of the Philippines, and is the first work of art that greets visitors upon entry into
the museum.

VICTORIO C. EDADES
Victorio C. Edades (December 23, 1895 March 7, 1985) is a Filipino painter who was the leader
of the revolutionary Thirteen Moderns who engaged their classical compatriots in heated debate
over the nature and function of art. He was named a National Artist in 1976.

ERNANDO CUETO AMORSOLO


Fernando Cueto Amorsolo (May 30, 1892 April 24, 1972) is one of the most important artists in
the history of painting in thePhilippines.[1] Amorsolo was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine
landscapes. He is popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery in the use of light. Born
in Paco, Manila, he earned a degree from the Liceo de Manila Art School in 1909.

HERNANDO RUIZ OCAMPO


Hernando Ruiz Ocampo was a leading radical modernist artist in the Philippines. He was a member
of the Saturday Group of artists (also known as the Taza de Oro Group), and was one of the pre-war
Thirteen Moderns, a group of modernist artists founded by Victorio C. Edades in 1938. Famously
known for his triumvirate of with neo-realists Vicente S. Manansala and Cesar Legaspi, his works
reflected the harsh realities of his country after the Second World War. However, many of his works
depicted lush sceneries and the beautiful Philippine landscapes through his skillful use of fierce and
bold colors

MAN AND CARABAO

One of the arts which served as the basis of curtain design in the Cultural Center of the Philippines
Main Theater. His works were exhibited in Washington, New York, London, and Tokyo, among
others.

Anita Magsaysay-Ho
Anita Magsaysay-Ho is a Philippine painter, considered by many to be one of the most important and
gifted Philippine modernists. In 1958, a panel of experts assembled by the Manila Chronicle named her
one of the 6 most outstanding painters in Philippine history. Magsaysay-Hos best known canvases,
which often have both realist and stylized aspects, celebrate the beauty of Philippine women engaged in
everyday tasks.

IN THE MARKET PLACE


In 2008, Magsaysay-Ho paved the way for Filipino artists to gain higher international recognition
when a small painting of hers titled "In the Market Place" broke price records at a Christie's auction
in Singapore, going for US$375,000 (about P15 million).
