GEEKS ON ICE

RULES & REGULATIONS


The Geeks On Ice Tournament (“Tournament”) is governed by
C.A.H.A. rules and regulations. In addition, Geeks on Ice
would like to place emphasis on the following additions
and/or modifications:
TEAM ROSTERS AND PLAYER ELIGIBILITY
1. All players must complete and sign the ‘GEEKS ON ICE Liability Waiver’ and
‘GEEKS ON ICE Registration and Player Contract’ forms prior to any game play.
2. All players must be a minimum 18 years of age to qualify for league registration.
3. Any player may be permitted to play for multiple teams and multiple divisions.

DIVISIONAL ALIGNMENT AND SCHEDULE


1. 16 teams; 4 Divisions
2. 5 on 5
3. Each team plays 3 round robin games within their division. Each team is
guaranteed a minimum of three games.
4. Based on points, the top team from each division advances to the Day of
Champions on Sunday April 20th, 2008
5. Teams are to check in no less than sixty minutes before the scheduled start of
their first game and at least forty-five minutes before the start of all remaining
games. Teams should be ready to play fifteen minutes before the start of the
scheduled game if requested to do so by the tournament committee.
6. Home team designation will be identified by the official Tournament schedule.
7. Seeding of teams will be determined by the Tournament Committee and may be
based on, but not exclusive to, average level of skill per player, per team, and
final standings in previous Geeks On Ice Tournaments, if applicable.

EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORMS

1. All participating members of the Tournament are required to wear full equipment
(i.e. CSA approved helmet with facial protection (i.e. cage and/or visor) and strap,
shin pads, elbow pads, etc.) while on the ice.
2. All teams are required to have matching Dark (Home) and White (Away) uniform
sets including socks.
3. Matching team helmets and pants are recommended but not required.
4. All substitute players not listed on a team roster are required to wear a plain
numbered jersey consistent in color with the base color of their team’s jersey.
5. Team representatives must ensure that all players’ name and number are clearly
recorded on the game sheet.
6. Special arrangements may be made between team representatives and
Tournament Committee to allow their team to play with one uniform set in their
inaugural Tournament. With only one set of uniforms the Tournament Committee
may be able to provide a loaner set of jerseys based on availability, if not you
must find your own.
7. Teams will be responsible for their own water bottles
8. Teams will be responsible for their own warm up pucks
FACILITIES

1. Teams have a 30 minute time limit for their dressing room after their game (Won’t
be enforced by committee)
2. Under NO circumstances is outside alcohol permitted in the dressing rooms.
3. Beer can be purchased at the facility and delivered to your room after your game.
If any team violates this rule, the facility will ban your team from further
competition and the Tournament Committee will not reimburse your registration
fee.
4. If an event or facility official deems a participant is too intoxicated to play, the
player will be suspended from further participation in the Tournament.

CONTACT
1. Body checking is prohibited.
2. Incidental contact may or may not result in a penalty based upon the discretion of
the on-ice officials.

FIGHTING AND/OR THE ABUSE OF OFFICIALS


1. Fighting is prohibited.
2. A fighting offence will result in a suspension for the remainder of the current
year’s Tournament and may result in permanent expulsion from the Tournament..
3. Any player dropping their gloves in an attempt to fight will receive a 10-minute
misconduct penalty.
4. Any player who leaves the players’ bench in the midst of an altercation will
suspended for the next consecutive game and will be placed on probation for the
remainder of the Tournament.
5. Verbal abuse of any official will result in the assessment of a 10-minute
misconduct penalty based upon the discretion of the on-ice officials.
6. Physical abuse of any official will result in permanent expulsion from the
Tournament.
7. Any player who has been ejected from a game will accumulate 10 minutes
towards their total individual player penalty minutes, which will be regarded in
the accumulation of the individual player penalty minute threshold/maximum as
well as the team accumulation for that game.
8. Any player who has been ejected from a game may be suspended for a minimum
of one game.

TEAM PENALTY ACCUMULATION


1. Teams shall not accumulate greater that five penalties (infractions – i.e. double-
minor counts as two) per game. For any team’s sixth, seventh and eighth penalty,
a penalty shot will be awarded to the opposing team.
2. No penalized player will be permitted to take a penalty shot. In addition, the
offending player will serve the duration of their penalty in the penalty box and
their team will play shorthanded unless coincidental penalties have occurred. A
ninth penalty by any team in any given game will result in immediate forfeiture of
the game by the offending team.
3. Teams shall not accumulate greater than 30 minutes in penalty minutes per
game. Any penalty beyond the 30-minute accumulation limit will result in
immediate forfeiture of the game by the offending team.
4. By forfeiting, the offending team relinquishes all individual player points recorded
in the game resulting in a win for the opposing team. All team and individual
player points scored by the opposing team will remain intact and be recorded. If
both teams exceed the accumulation limit simultaneously the score will be
recorded as 0-0 and points will not be recorded for either team.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER PENALTY ACCUMULATION

1. Individual players may not accumulate greater than three penalties (infractions)
per game. A fourth individual player penalty will result in ejection from the game
after which the offending player may be suspended for the next consecutive
game.
2. Individual players may not receive more than one-ten minute misconduct penalty
per game. A second misconduct penalty in any given game will result in ejection
from that game after which the offending player will be suspended for the
remainder of the Tournament.
3. Any player who accumulates a total of 30 penalty minutes within the Tournament
will result in permanent expulsion from the Tournament

MAJOR PENALTIES AND EJECTIONS


1. Any player who incurs a single 5-minute major penalty will automatically receive
a 10-minute misconduct penalty, will be ejected from the game and will be
suspended for a minimum of one game.
2. Any player who incurs a second 5-minute major penalty during their probationary
period may be suspended for the remainder of the Tournament.
3. Any player who incurs 3 stick infractions will be ejected from the game and will be
suspended for the remainder of the Tournament.
4. Any player who has been ejected from a game must leave the ice and/or
bench/penalty box immediately, after which any remaining penalty time for the
offending player is to be served by another teammate that was on the ice at the
time of the offence.

SUSPENSIONS AND PROBATION


1. Any player who has been ejected from a game and/or suspended will remain on
probation for the duration of the Tournament.
2. Any player who is currently on probation that incurs an addition suspension may
be suspended for future Tournaments.
3. Any player who attempting to play while suspended will permanently expelled
from future Tournaments.

GOALTENDERS
1. All teams are required to have a goaltender present and on the ice at the
beginning of each game. Game play will not commence until designated
goaltender, wearing regulation certified goaltender equipment has been dressed.
2. If a team’s goaltender is not present at the scheduled game start time, that team
will be allowed a 5-minute grace period.
3. In the event that a goaltender does not come on to the ice until after the allotted
5-minute warm-up has expired no further warm-up will be permitted.
4. Goaltenders shall be permitted to wear ‘Cat-Eye’ type goaltender masks. By doing
so, they assume all risk inherent therein and agree to take full responsibility for
any injury or harm caused to themselves while wearing such equipment. In
addition they must agree to waive any liability whatsoever from the Tournament
Committee.
5. Goaltenders are encouraged, but not required, to wear a team jersey consistent
with that of their teammates.

GAME PLAY (EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULES)

1. Slap Shots, where the stick starts above the waist, are not allowed. Referees will
immediately blow the whistle to stop the play; and a face-off will be taken in the
offending team’s zone.
2. Each round robin game will have a 50-minute curfew this includes the warm-up.
The exception to this would be in the case of a game stoppage due to unusual
circumstances.
3. The three-five minute warm up will start immediately after the Ice Resurfacer
doors have closed (Discretion of Officials).
4. Each game will consist of two 15-minute periods of stop time.
5. If there is a seven goal difference the game will be running time. If the losing
team scores, the timekeeper will return to stop time and continue unless the goal
spread becomes seven again.
6. The last five minutes of the second period will be running time when there is a
five-goal difference. If the losing team scores, the timekeeper will return to stop
time and continue unless the goal spread becomes five again.
7. In Round Robin games points will be awarded as follows:
i. Two (2) points for a win
ii. One (1) point for a tie
iii. Zero (0) points for a loss
8. Division Champions: To advance to the semi-finals, in the event of a tie after the
Round Robin games, the following rules will apply:
i. Team that has the official win over the tying team. If still tied,
ii. Team with the best goals for/goals against differential advances. If
still tied,
iii. Team with the least goals against advances. If still tied,
iv. Coin toss, Winner of toss advances.
9. Semi Final Match Ups will be decided by applying the following rules:
i. The division champ with the highest points will play the division
champ with the fourth highest points
ii. The division champ with the second highest points will play the
division champ with the third highest points
If any are tied,

iii. Team with the best goals for/goals against differential advances. If
still tied,
iv. Team with the least goals against advances. If still tied,
v. Coin toss, Winner of toss advances.
10. Semi Final winners advance to the Championship Game.
11. If time permits, overtime will be played in the Championship Game if the game is
tied at the end of regulation time.
12. Each team will be allowed ONLY one 30-second time out during the Championship
game.
13. Overtime will consist of one 5 minute sudden death period with teams playing
four on four. If the teams remain tied or if time does not permit overtime, shoot-
outs will be used to determine the winner.
14. Shoot Out sequence is as follows:
i. Home team will send player S1 to center ice. Home S1 will
complete the shoot out
ii. Visitor S1 will go to center ice. Visitor S1 will complete the shoot
out.
iii. If a tie remains S2 of home and visitor will continue until tie is
broken.
iv. In the event that S1 through to S3 have not broken the tie, the
team will send S4, S5, and S6 until the tie is broken.
v. No player will be repeated until the full team has participated in the
shoot out.
15. A player serving a penalty that has not expired by the end of the sudden death
must remain in the penalty box until a winner has been decided. The player may
not participate in the shoot out.
16. The centre red line will not be regarded in any instances of icing or offside calls.
Should any player of a team, equal or superior in numerical strength to the
opposing team, shoot, bat or deflect the puck from behind their own blue line
beyond the goal line of the opposing team, play will be stopped and the puck
faced-off at the end face-off spot of the offending team, unless on the play, the
puck will have entered the net of the opposing team, in which case the goal will
be allowed.
17. Automatic icing may be called or waived off based upon the discretion of the on-
ice officials.

The Tournament Committee reserves the right to add to and/or amend the official
Tournament rules at any time as deemed necessary or appropriate by the
Tournament Committee.

Any behaviour, misconduct or non-compliance of any of the above rules or rules as


directed by the Tim Horton’s 4-Ice Centre that results in the suspension or ejection of
a player or participant of the Tournament can result in the forfeiture of full
registration fee as well as the individual’s and/or team’s permanent expulsion from
the Tournament.
