Koh: NEP must look forward

Liberalisation of policy should work towards quality, equality
GEORGE TOWN: Although the
New Economic Policy has generally
achieved some of its goals, certain
aspects of its implementation have
led to controversy and discontent
among the lower and middle classes
of all races, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon
said.
The Gerakan president said it was
necessary to not only analyse and
rectify such weaknesses but more
importantly, to look forward and

plan a future strategy which is even

more proactive and positive.
We should not only look at quantity and quota but to move towards
achieving higher quality and greater
equality. he said in a statement yesterday.
He was commenting on Deputy
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun
Razaks recent statement that there
should be gradual liberalisation of the
NEP when bumiputras begin to feel

more confident of competing with

others domestically and globally.
Dr Koh said the emphasis should
be on enhancing the knowledge and
skills, harnessing the energy and
enthusiasm, inculcating a sense of
commitment and confidence
amongst all Malaysians, especially
the young.
Equally important is the promotion of collaboration and teamwork
in all endeavours while motivating

the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity.

We can draw on the strengths of
our respective cultures to create an
economy, a society and a culture that
is uniquely Malaysian and yet global, he said.
He said Gerakan would continue
to contribute ideas and participate
actively in the formulation and
implementation of this new national
initiative.

GEORGE TOWN: The Transport

Ministry should ensure that Keretapi
Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB)s
projects do not affect public infrastructure like river bunds, said Chief
Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim, who recently ordered KTMB
to stop work on its double-tracking
project in Jawi, said the project had
damaged the Sungai Jawi river bund,
disrupting water flow and causing
floods.
The state government wants
KTMB and the projects contractor
MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn
Bhd to repair the damaged bund,
compensate the people, write an
apology letter to the state and guarantee that such incident will not
happen again.
This is for the good of everyone. I
am sure that when it floods, the
double-tracking project will also
be affected, he told reporters after
attending a dinner with Paralympiad
Games athletes at Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel here on Friday
night.
On the states request for an additional RM970mil for flood mitigation
projects, Lim said he has yet to
receive any response from the
Federal Government.
We hope the Federal Government
will approve this emergency fund. I
have written to Finance Minister
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to seek
an appointment with him about the
matter, he said.
He also said the state government
would relocate residents living
near the flood-prone Sungai Pinang,
which would be deepened and
widened to overcome flood woes.
In his speech, Lim lauded the athletes for their performance at the
National Paralympiad Games in May
where Penang emerged first runnerup with 49 gold, 21 silver and 24
bronze medals.
