ArcGIS for Desktop Software Set-Up Guide

To install ArcGIS for Desktop Software, you must complete the following six steps:
(1)
(2)
(3)
(4)
(5)
(6)

Request a license code from the FIU GIS Center

Create a free Global Account with ESRI, the software manufacturer
Activate your license code through ESRIs license activation webpage
Download the software installation from the ESRI website
Install the software onto your computer
Authorize the software with your activated license code

Step 1: Request a license code from the FIU GIS Center

Request an educational evaluation license code from the FIU GIS Center by writing an E-mail to one of its coordinators
containing the following information about yourself (items indicated by an asterisk * are required):

Full Name*
Panther ID*
FIU Status (student, faculty, staff)*
Departmental/Unit Affiliation*
Currently Enrolled GIS or remote sensing courses

Upon review of your request, you will receive an E-mail response containing your educational evaluation license code.
This code will be 12 characters long and begin with the letters EVA, followed by nine numbers; for example:
EVA999999999.

Step 2: Create a free Global Account with ESRI, the software manufacturer

If you do not already have one, you will need to create a free Global Account with ESRI, the software manufacturer by
following this URL:

https://webaccounts.esri.com/cas/index.cfm

Click on the second option, Create An Account.

Under Create An Account, you will have to choose a Username
and Password.
You must also supply ESRI with some basic personal information
(Name, Organization, E-mail address, etc.) to successfully create
your ESRI Global Account.

Step 3: Activate your license code through ESRIs license activation webpage
Now that you have received your license code through the FIU GIS Center, and have created your ESRI Global Account,
you must activate that license code through ESRIs license activation page. Do that through the following URL:

http://www.esri.com/landing-pages/software/arcgis/arcgis-desktop-student-trial

You must be logged-in to your ESRI Global Account to activate your code. Enter your 12-character EVA code (including
all numbers; e.g., EVA999999999) into the field.

Step 4: Download the software installation from the ESRI website

Once you have entered your EVA code into the field, you will be prompted to select which version of ArcGIS for Desktop
you wish to download and install.
Be sure to select the version of the software corresponding to the activation code you were provided from the FIU GIS
Center.
Unless you have specifically requested to receive a code for an older version of the software, you should choose the latest,
most updated version. If you are uncertain about which software version corresponds to the license code you received,
contact the FIU GIS Center.

After selecting the appropriate software version, you will be taken to a set of steps provided by ESRI, as well as to a series
of files available for download.

Follow the instructions provided by ESRI and download the necessary files. The most important file is the ArcGIS for
Desktop file.
If you have a previous version of ArcGIS installed, you may need to also download the ArcGIS Uninstall Utility file. If
you have never had a previous version of ArcGIS installed, do not download this file.
You may also wish to download the ArcGIS Tutorial Data for Desktop, if youd like to complete the ArcGIS Tutorials
that accompany the software. This download is purely optional.

Step 5: Install the software onto your computer

Upon successfully downloading the correct software installation file onto your computer, the ArcGIS for Desktop Setup
box should appear. If it does not appear automatically, you can manually select to Run the software installation file.

You will move through a series of prompts, each time selecting Next >. One of these prompts requires to you accept
ESRIs license agreement. Be sure to read the license agreement carefully prior to accepting.

When prompted to Select Installation Type, choose Complete.

You will also be asked to specify a Destination Folder where the software will be installed. By default, this will be on
your C:\Program Files. Unless you prefer to install the software in a different file directory, accept this default location.

The same applies to the Python Destination Folder. Unless you prefer to install the software in a different file directory,
accept this default location.
Youre now ready to initiate the installation.

Click Install. Youll see a series of installation progress bars.

A box will appear indicating the installations success.

Step 6: Authorize the software with your activated license code

With the software now successfully installed, you will need to authorize it with the license code that you activated through
ESRI in Step 3.
You can authorize the software with the ArcGIS Administrator application.
ArcGIS Administrator is one of the applications that comes in the ArcGIS for Desktop installation.
As with all applications in the ArcGIS for Desktop suite, it can be accessed through the All Programs button on your
Start Menu.

Select Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use as the software product to

be used for ArcGIS for Desktop applications.
Select the Authorize Now button in the ArcGIS
Administrator dialog box to launch the Authorization Wizard.
Click OK.

Under the Authorization Options, select I have installed my

software and need to authorize it.

Under the Authorization Method options, select Authorize with

Esri now using the Internet.
Click Next >.

The next box will ask you for your Software Authorization Number. This is the 12-character EVA code. Enter your code
into the box.

You will then be prompted to Authorize Software Extensions.

Under Options, select I do not want to authorize any

extensions at this time.
(No extensions need to be authorized, as the educational
evaluation license already includes all necessary extensions.)

The software authorization request will then be sent to ESRI. You will see a progress bar indicating when this process is
complete. It should take no longer than 15-30 seconds.
You will then receive a message on the dialog box indicating that the authorization was successfully completed. Your
ArcGIS for Desktop suite of applications is now ready for use.
