Dear Co-Laborer,

Greetings In the name of Christ. The rain is falling over Ghidamoyo,

and it finds Tommy and me sitting in the powerful and very useful Ford
pickup given us by many of you, under the sponsorship of the .Cagle Lake
Church of Christ. We are sitting about one half mile from our house, down
by the new deep well. The v/inch cable is hooked to the seven ton drilling
machine which just .finished drilling a well, 148 feet deep, producj^ng 2550

gallons of water per hour.

We

the drill half way out when the rains

came. vVe are getting ready for a man to come and transfer the pump and the
engine frora the Government well to ours.
It will push the water up to the
12,000 gallon reservoir from where it gravitates to the hospital buildings
and

the

rest

of the mission

The hospital building is coming along nicely and two of the six major
units are now ready for roofing, with the foundations for two others com

plete. The clinic continues to operate and many contacts are being made,
oouls continue to coine to the Light because of the combination of ' Viford
and deed." Dr. Jerry Smith adds much to the program as he journeys from
Salisbury tvdce a month to visit the clinic and give testimony to Christ.
He is doing a tremendous task for the work here and his fine Christian
character enhanses the atmosphere of this area.

The political situation remains unchanged and more encouragement comes

from the Government than ever before in assisting us to carry out our act
ivities for Christ.
Gasoline rationing has not hindered us, but it has sent

me on my small motorcycle more than before, for preaching.

It gets 1S4 miles

to a gallon in contrst to the 4 wheel drive vehicles, and has taken me to

areas which cannot be reached by car or truck.
The head teacher, Mr. funungwe, -goes on his motorcycle as well, and recently we have gone to a new

area where over twenty have confessed Christ as thier Lord during the past
month.

We anxiously await the arrival of the Dale Marshall and Charles Kelley
families, expected to arrive in a few months. They are seeking support at
the present time. Opportunities lie waiting for their testimony to Christ,
As the time for their arrival draws nearer,

the time for the Ammermans to

leave for furlough draws nearer too. An empty place in our hearts will re
main as they go to the U.S. to rehearse all things that God has done with
them.

250 new children have entered our Christian Day Schools this year and
what a thrill it is to know that each day they are taught of Jesus Christ.
Affiliated With "Central African Mission, Churches of Christ"

Two schools are now under construction and soon the classes can move in from

under the trees.

Since this is durin{.^ the rains it is hard to meet outside,
but most are not worried about getting wet if they can just go to school.

All of this is very costly in some respects, but compared with that being done
in teaching and preaching, we find this a very productive field for Christ.
Your concern through prayers and gifts are appreciated and needed so much.

The people here are doing a lot financially to help build their schools so
this is not a big burden, but we depend on God to supply through you, that
needed to accomplish His will. We need your prayers and generous support and
we will do our part to use it to the glory of God. Again we say, thank you,
and praise the Lord for this opportunity of working together with you in
spreading the precious Seed of Life among the African people.
Yours for His will,

X',

Dear Friends in Christ,

Greetings in the name of our Precious Lord. How wonderful it has been
this past week end to emphasize the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
Brother Bruce /unmerman arranged a wonderful week end of services which began
on Friday evening and finished Sunday afternoon. We witnessed thirty-one
souls being buried and raised in like manner as Christ, in Christian baptism.
Bill and Jackie Brant from Zambia stopped in for the week end, and the Jerry

Smith family had arranged for his bi-weekly visit to the clinic to be at the
same time. Dr. Jerry brought a thrilling message on Sunday morning in which
he pictured Christ in a wonderful way.

Bruce had arranged for all the churches from around Slnoia, Chidamoyo
and Vuti to have a few como to represent them, and to take back what they
had learned. Truly, it was a good time of fellowship, and the sessions were
planned well for the mutual benefit of all.
LOST IN SHIPMENT

Somev/hBre along the way, two of our drums were opened and many slides,
clothes, a sabro -saw-,camera equipment and papers in a brief case were- taken
This made a total loss of about 300 dollars, but also a loss of several im

portant papers. Those wo can never replace. The reason for mentioning this
is that among the papers were a list of items, names and addresses and re
quests by several people. I can remember one young boy who v/anted a piece
of wood from Pdiodesia; a man who wanted an old license plate; and a little

girl who v;antod some models of animals like wo had on our display, V/ould
those of you who had made requests such as these please write to us and re
quest those things again, and give us your names and addresses?
ARRIVALS

ANTICIPATED

The arrival of the Charles Kolley and the Dale Marshall families is
greatly anticipated. They are needed so badly in the expanding work here,
and the anxious moments of approval from the hesitant Rhodosian Government,
has made us quite concerned. Brothers Lawyer, Jerry Smith, John Pemberton
and I had several appointments v/ith immigration officials.
Letters of
appeal to them; begging for extra gasoline to go; and tn.king time out from
our busy schedules, were all a part of it. Our hopes at the present time

arc very high.

DEPARTURE

DREADED

The Bruce Aimnerman family will depart soon to rehearse what God has done
through them among the African people. They shall surely be missed by all of
us. They are to arrive in the States the last of June, the Lord willing.

We wish them God speed as they travel. It is truly a glorious experience

to travel among Christian people rejoicing together and sharing problems of
concern to world evangelization. We give out thanks to you for your interest
and concern. May God give a great increase to our- association with you that
souls be reconciled to Him.

Yours in His Service,

Ziden and Helen

Dear Christian Friends,

Greetings in the name of Jesus, our Redeemer. Great cause for rejoicing seems to
find its way into every day. God has given rejoicing through Jesus, our Lord, as we are
privileged to be called His children, and amid the toils and heartaches of witnessing here,
we thank Him for victories won and for you who make them possible.
MEETING IN BULAWAYO

w-:;re privileged to again meet with other missionaries at a recent meeting in

Bulawayo. All were able to get gas for going and many doubled up in cars so as to save gas
for Rhodesia. Brother Bruce Ammerman and Dr. Jeriiy Smith accompanied me and we enjoyed the
rare chance of having time to share joys and sorrows one with the other by talking along
the 900 mile journey. Helen and the children stayed with Marrieta Smith while we were gone.
RECRUITS COMING IN

During the past two months I have made 3 special trips into Salisbury, Rhodesia's

capital, for talks with the Immigration D^ay-tmenL.' John-I^emberton came up from Hippo Val

ley to join me on one of these occasionffT'lVe composed**Tet:ter8 of .appeal, information,

etc. in an effort to open the way for 'l^he Kelley and Marshall fmSjilies who had been rejected
resident permits due to several yaagnnagf TjhTrh hawgdisclosed. One main
reason is that the U. S. no longer cooperates in normal international exchange of security
information in regards to immigrants. Thus the Rhodesian Government has no cross check on
applicants. Many of us have been in prayer for guidance and help in these matters. The
result received yesterday was certainly an answer to prayers, for both were approved. We
had talked to the Secretary of the Cabinet Minister. His directive to the Selective Board
even shook them, for they had rejected many and, all of a sudden, the Marshalls and Kelleys

were to".receive approval, which we understand sets a precedence for other applicants of the
Central Africa Mission.
HOSPITAL

As I write to you, I'm enjoying the quietness of the African bush country, along
with the rhythmic shovels full of river sand falling into the Ford truck. Our new five-ton
truck has been broken down for a week and the supplies for the hospital, which is going up

quickly, are running low.

As a result I'm driving the Ford (which I have never turned over

to our African driver) and getting a chance to send a few thoughts aloiig to you.
LORRY

Just today a mechanic came from Salisbury, 200 miles away, to fix the lorry. He
will return to Salisbury today and then come back in 2 days with the repaired differential,
and all will be back to normal again.

Zlayba you'd have time to sit down and write us a letter also.

Dear Go- 'Yorkers,

Miition

p/bob 39, icoi June, 1966

Bhedaiio,

Africa

Greetings in the name of Chrifet. Excitement has filled the last

fevf days and I hardly know where to start; but start with us on a 200 mile
journey beginning at 3i20 A.M. on June 7th. The suit cases were all packed

( fortunately ), so this helped as Helen went Into labor exactly four weeks

ahead of sxrhedtrie~.' TheCharlea-Keliey famtly had arrived in~Rhodesia" on May

21st, ( an interesting story ) and were staying with us In our home.

I woke

Charles and asked him to help load the car.

Indications pointed to nothing false and from the arrival of Karo-

l;^,rn and Tommy we figured there was no time to loose. Bouncing over 57 miles
of gravel road we came to the Salisbury road with 131 miles left to go. We
needed to go to the bank, and also to see the gas rationing officer to insure
enough for a return trip, but time did not allow. All was going well until
about 45 miles from Salisbury when the fan belt broke. Fortunately we were
near the only gas station for 30 miles in either direction and after waking
up the attendant and getting a new belt we were on the way.
Salisbury At Last

Upon arrival at the Hospital Helen was given shots to stop labor

since it vi^as supposed to be another month. This only "delayed the agony"
Helen said, as at 3 o'clock, Lynda Gayle came weighing 5 pound 6 ounces.
Kelley's

Arrive

Well back to the arrival of the Kelley's.

Due to a Mis- transmis
sion of telegrams no one knev/ of thier arrival.
For five hours the^'waited at
the Salisbury airport as the police, denominational missionaries, and airline
personnel searched for a lead to contacting Ammermans or us,
Helen had been

to the doctor in Salisbury on the 20th. and we were still in town and having
tea with Bro. Vernon Lawyer and family when they received a call wondering if
they could help with information . The reply, " Sure, Ziden and Helen are in
our living room.
Let me call Ziden to the phone."
Marshall's Proceeding

Just yesterday I received a cablegram from the Marshall family

who have arrived safely in Capetown, South Africa and are proceeding to
Rhodesia. How wonderful it is to see God raising up laborers for the trem
endous challenge and task which lies before us here in the heart of Africa.

Truly God is answering prayers in a marvelous way and how grateful we are
for each of His blessings,
"Affiliated With "Central African Mission, Churches of Christ"

Help is desperately needed in so many ways, and the work is ever

so bigi^but, v/e give our best that b-od will be glorified and the birth of
people into Christ will be caused to abound unto your account as you make
possible our witnessing in Rhodesia.
In His Service,

Excerpts from personal Letters

May 28 - By the time the Kelley's came into Salisbury, by bus

from the airport we were there to meet them. They were really surprised to
see us by then. We hadn't taken an extra vehicle or anything so you can
imagine hov/ we were packed going to Karoi.

The Ford was there so it wasn^t

so bad from there on out, but there were eight of us, all of their luggage,

our suit case, two dozen baby chickens, and some groceries in our little
Fiatt

car.

June 14 - Helen is doing bautifully and the baby as well as can

be expected. This is the 8th. day for Helen in the hospital and it will be
at least 3 more.

Lynda Gayle is so slow and weak.

The most milk she has

taken at one feeding is l-g- ounces. She must take 3 ounces each feeding
before they "will allow the baby to come home. Karolyn is now in bed on Drs.
orders. Her tonsils are inflamed and she is taking medicine. How wonderful
it must be to have a " grandma and grandpa " around .
take advantage, but it would be nice at times.

Tommy has a cold but doing well.

In desperation the family turned to us, but it v;as too late.

Many areas still wait upon the Gospel, but in the meantime witchcraft and
paganism dominate their society.
There is much to be done and we press on,
trying to be used of God in the most effective way.
Reaping the Harvest

.A recent preaching trip to the Sinoia area with Brother Dale Marshall gave
great cause for rejoicing, as over sixty souls repented toward God.
Brother
Dale led in a most effective v/ay and shov/ed filmstrips to several hundred
people. We saw new opportunities and discussed them vjith the people, thril
led to see their eagerness to knov/ the Gospel.
How Do You Say I t

Its hard for me to know hov; to say it, for we have never appealed for funds
in our monthly letter to each of you, except for a furlough. Nov/ v;e find
ourselves in a situation which is thrilling and yet hard for us.
It is
thrilling to see now workers come to join in the work, and it is thrilling

to see the hospital funds coming along reasonably v/ell, toward whjlch so many
have worked.
Funds for the hospital are still needed, as the construction
goes up rapidly and will soon bo completed
in a few months.
But some have
felt that with the hospital being one of our projects, and with the Marshall
and Kelloy families both coming to join the work, that we do not need as many
funds

as

before.

Our evangelism through tho Christian Day Schools, and tho evangelistic pro
gram we have set before us is more vigorous than during our first term.
Others have joined, but the work is so vast that they are doing what v/o could
never have done and it is not a matter of dividing the work but a matter of

developing more of the tremendous opportunities. We are basically respon

sible for the hospital funds, but oven this is completely above our other
programs. We would prayerfully request your help in maintaining funds for
our own evangelistic efforts, and help in whatever way you can.
Coming Right Over

The hood of
of antelope
in the nick
leaped over

our little motor car seemed to be a hurdle for a large species

recently. A giant Kudu appeared and, as the car stopped just
of time, the Kudu, standing some six feet high at the shoulders
the hood and didn't quite make the jump. His hind quarters

landed on the fender, causing a bit of damage.

In one sense of the word, we have many hurdles
climb, but how wonderful i t is to be a child

to
cross, and mountains
to
of God and have His help in

accomplishing what we feel might be impossible. Not only do we praise His

Holy Name in thanksgiving, but we give our thanks for you v/ho are making

our v/itness in Rhodesia possible through your help. God has blessed us v/ith
wonderful supporters whom v/o know are behind us in prayers and gifts. May
God bless our efforts together that Christ may be glorified and souls
saved.

Our greetings to all the brethorn.

Because of the Risen Lord,

Dear Christian.Friends,

Sunmier has arrived in full force. The sun peeps over Kenyongo Moun
tain well before six o'clock, and the birds are already chirping happily.
Though
mornings are delightful, we know the day will soon be uncom
fortably hot. Our maximum "-"Minimum thermometer which c^ght the afternoon
sun on the north side of the house, went as far as it could beyond the 120
degree mark ( about 126 degree) each afternoon. One afternoon we decided to
move it in the shade where it registered 104 degrees.
RECENT

VISITORS

We were happy to have Madonna Burgett with us for a week to work at

the clinic. She saw a lot of babies and small children with whooping cough
and a few cases of measles, along with the general run of other illnesses.
She treated Tommy for a sore throat and ear infection and Lynda for a head
cold,

and gavo'hor her third DL-P.T. shot.

The day after Madonna loft a man from Salisbury come to help on the
hospital roof for a v/eek.
He helped with the more difficult work of making

" hips and valleys." Work began on the roof at 5:30 A.M. and finished at six
each evening; so those v/ere long days in the heat.
Dr. Louise Westwater, th Provincial Medical Officer for this area, had

lunch with us and spent a few hours seeing the hospital, visiting the clinic
and helping to f i l l out forms to submit to the Government for future finan c i a l assistance.

In addition to these the police stopped in a couplo of times'to see if

everything was quiet.
It has been.
ITUTT'S

IIErWSNOTES

Karolyn is in her second year of school by correspondence.

She visit
ed the teacher who checked her first years work when we were in Salisbury and
she said Karoly is doing very well. Reading is her favorite subject. She is
fifty - one inches tall now.
She especially enjoys her new sister and is a
big help to her Mother. She gives Laddie, the dog, and Happy and Yellow Fluff, the kittens, the attention they need.
The mornings usually find Toiamy at the hospital with his Daddy at
least until Karolyn finishes school. His favorite toys are a hammer, a few
nails, and some scraps of boards.
Last Saturday was a particularly rough day

for Tommy.

Ho fell off his tricycle into the rose bushes and scratched his

leg in quite a few places. That evening he come running into the house and
hit the corner of the table cutting a half inch gash in his cheek just below
his left eye. He probably should have had a stitch or two but Daddy buttorflied it with tape.

He is doing well in spite of his troubles,

Lynda is four months now and weighs fifteen pounds and a half.
She is
a real little fatty.
She smiles and coos at us and we all enjoy her so much.
Helen keeps busy with her duties as a wife, Mother, and school teacher.
She has been doing some much needed sewing for the family as well.

Ziden has been spending most of his time on the roof of the hospital
lately, trying to get it under roof before the rains begin.
He has been in
specting the schools again. A few weeks ago ho performed a Christian V/edding
Ceremony for one of our teachers.
GREAT

REJOICING

Our hearts V(/ero thrilled when one of the two local store-keepers,

Isaiah Nxele, and his wife come to accept the Lord as their Saviour.
They
were "immorsod for the remission of their sins yesterday,
Isaiah has attend
ed the church services at Chidamoyo since we first come here so this has not
been a quick decision.

Rejoice with us in victories for the Lord and please continue to re

member the nov/ Christians, those outside of Christ, and our efforts for Him

v/ho died for us, in your daily prayers.

Please pray also that our needs to

continue this work may be supplied.

could bo heard as Brother

Marshall and Michael carefully rebuilt a ruined tank into a baptistry. For
seven months no rain had fallen and the streams were getting low. so I talked
with others about it.
The tank provided the answer.
Thomas, who is about 65 years of age and works in the clinic, came
the following Lord's' Day with tv^o other adults
and a young person to confess
Christ as Lord.
For several years the \tford of God had been carefully forming
their lives which brought them to desire unity with God through Jesus Christ
our Precious

Lord.

Last night wo wore encouraged as 16 men came to our monthly Christ

ian leadership class.
We continued our discussion on Church Officers and felt

that many of them were getting a deeper incite into the real scriptural taeching. Each month we prepare a list of daily scriptures for them to read on a
certain subject which is then discussed.

The hospital

being v/ithout forethought, for over

three years v/e had prayed with Dr. Pruett and others before going into a ma^jor
hospital program. Much of the Rhodosian v/ork is unique in that, like here at
Chidamoyo,
the land would not be granted unless we would do a medical work.
The medical department v/ould not approve any thing less than a 100 bod. hospi
tal; and the Chief would not allow us in his area. The only alternative -- leave thousands of ready hearts vi^ithout the Gospel. We arc happy for the opp

We ever seek ways and moans of bringing the church to being self sup

We need your

efforts.
We are
ever thankful for you v/ho will sacrifice on our behalf in
preaching the Gospel in this land.
