I have 90 ft diameter tank with 90 ft height.

If this tank full of grain, the

manufacture company told me there is no uplift will take place under the seismic
and I don't believe him. Any help

hi. case shall also be considered when no grain. hence seismic and wind both has to be considered.

The magnitude of seismic loads depends on seismic zone. If the tank is in a very low seismic zone, the uplift
force (vertical) can be smaller than the tank weight and the overturning moment due to horizontal force can be
resisted by the moment due to tank weight. Usually, seismic analysis is perform with the tank normal operating
condition (with content) as it is reasonably assumed that earthquake event is unlikely to occur when tank is idle
(empty).

It is very unlikely that wind and earthquake events to occur simultaneously and, therefore, tank is not designed
for the combined loads of the two events. For wind condition, empty tank condition governs and the wind event
is not considered as rare as the earthquake.

please ask manufacturer to provide you with proper calculation based on the latest codes and standard.

Check the code followed for the design. Review the design calculations (if available) . If the calculations are not
available, analysis the impact of seismic forces based on the As Built dimensions & Seismic parameters.

if you are concerned with the integrity of the tank consider coating the tank with our cold CERARMIX which
could cacoon the tank from corrosion and stability of it standing thru earthquakes and tornadoes and other
earthly events.

Is your Tank provided with Anchors?
Originally if tank is designed with Sesmic design by manufacturer in accordance with Code then you need not
worry.
The worst case for design is Tank in Empty condition furing Earthquake / High wind. ( Don't occure
simultaneously )

There are a series of loads combinations for tank anchors calculation and tank earthquake analysis as per API
650.

I am absolutely amazed that there is an applied coating available for storage tanks that will
provide stability to keep it upright during earthquakes , tornados and other earthly events.

My initial reaction is to query how the manufacturer has tested the reliability of the produce in such conditions?

Please look at API-650 Appendix E. The seismic moment depends on the tank diameter, height, weight, product,
and the seismic properties of the location. You cannot make a blanket statement that there would be no seismic
uplift without performing an analysis. I would ask to see his calculations and then compare them to API-650
Appendix E.

Concur... check the design cases for empty and full. If there are post construction issues, consider API 579.

What manufacturer is telling is correct. When the tank is full of grain and earth quake happens how the uplift or
overturning will take place? If it overturns what will happen? Grain of few dollars will go wasted. Nothing
more. We are building buildings of 110 stories where humans are living and if earthquake happens what will
happen to that building and the people living in int? Will it uplift or overturn or fall down? If the earthquake of
that rector scale happens then neither the manufacturer of that tank nor user of the tank will survive sitting home
forget near the tank. Hence no question of wasting grain of few dollars and damage to the tank. Conclusion: The
tank will not move by one inch also if earthquake of small scale happens and if it happens of big scale no one
will survive to see what has happened. Is it ok?

He is likely correct, for the Full condition. And the empty condition will typically control anchorage design
requirments.
Eitherway, you need not, and should not take anyones word.

You can solve for the seismic coefficient, the loads, the building (structure) category, and performing the
overturning analysis should be relatively simple for a storage tank.

With due respect, the logic provided in the post by Mr. Kulkarni appears dangerous and irresponsible. From the
original question, it is clear that the customer wanted to have the tank designed for earthquake event, but the
tank designer/erector is advising the customer that the tank will not be subjected to uplift and overturning due to
earthquake loads or the earthquake forces will be resisted by the tank weight.
A country's Building Code is written with considerations of public safety and welfare and also against property
damages. Building or equipment design must comply with the Code, otherwise designer/user will be charged for
criminal negligence.

o

o

The earthquake zone of a region is based on historical data and statistical probability. It is reasonably assumed
that the buildings and equipment will suffer least damages, if designed with the Code requirements.

As respectable Mr. Arjun Prasad is telling following API 650 and ASME is best thing. In some cases empty
weight of tank it self comes so more that it does not need anchoring at all. Let the earthquake come or high
wind. Design has to be done referring code as well as clients instructions. E tank software tells you what to use
what not as per code.
