IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS!
This manual contains important safety and operating instructions for the Trace Engineering T240 Autotransformer
for use in residential and commercial applications. Consult local authorities as to national and/or local electric codes
and any additional installation requirements.

PRECAUTIONS AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

1. Before using the product, read all instructions and cautionary markings on (1) the inverter, (2) the solar panels
and (3) all appropriate sections of this instruction manual.
2. CAUTION: Do not disassemble this product; take it to a qualified service center when service or repair is
required. Incorrect re-assembly may result in a risk of electric shock or fire.
3. CAUTION: To reduce risk of electric shock, disconnect AC power before attempting any maintenance or
cleaning. The input side of the AC breakers may be live even thought the breaker is off.
4. No terminals, lugs or splices are required for hook-up of the AC wiring. AC wiring must be no less than 12
AWG gauge copper wire and rated for 75C or higher.
5. Additional AC disconnects may be required as part of the system installation. Consult local and national
electric code requirements.
6. OVERCURRENT PROTECTION The AC input / output wiring is provided with a 25 amp circuit breaker for
overcurrent protection. This breaker is branch circuit rated and has a 10,000 AIC rating. It is suitable for
both residential and commercial applications.
7. The AC input / output neutral conductor is not connected (bonded) to the metal chassis. The input and output
Hot conductors are not isolated from each other. All installations must be in compliance with all local and
national electrical codes and standards.
8. MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS Wall mount, horizontal orientation only.
9. GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS The metal housing of this inverter must be connected to a permanent
grounding system. System grounding as required by the National Electric Code, ANSI /NFPA 70-1996, is the
responsibility of the system installer. A grounding terminal strip is provided for connection of equipment
grounding conductors.

DESCRIPTION
The T240 Autotransformer uses high efficiency transformer technology and is constructed with high temperature
materials and M-6 grade steel laminations to UL Class-H standards. This provides an unusually high efficiency
device for voltage conversion from an inverter, generator or conventional AC source. The T240 has two identical
windings that can be used to step-up, step-down or balance the voltage of an AC power source or to an AC load.
The T240 is sized to take advantage of the Trace Engineering inverter/charger product line. The T240 is able to
only be configured as a 120/240 VAC 60 Hertz Autotransformer.

ENCLOSURE
The T240 includes a powder coated steel enclosure suitable for indoor installations with knockouts for conduit
connections. Up to six additional Square D QOU model circuit breakers can be added for additional input / output
wiring protection and control. These breakers are available separately from your Trace dealer or distributor.

WIRING CONNECTIONS
The AC HOT connections are made to the 2 pole 25 amp breaker included in the T240. It accepts up to #2 AWG
wire. AC neutral connections are made at the terminal block provide. It includes three terminals one #2/0 AWG
and two #4 AWG terminals. For some installations, two AC HOT wires will need to be connected to the same
breaker terminal. A split bolt type connector is provided to make this multiple wire connection.

APPLICATIONS
Step Up Autotransformer
The typical installation is 120 VAC to 240 VAC step-up. This is typically used to enable the use of a 240 VAC
deep well pump from a 120 VAC inverter output. If the control switch for the pump (float, pressure or manual
type) is used on the 120 VAC side, then the small idle power consumption of the transformer is eliminated when
the pump is not running.

Step Down Autotransformer

This installation allows you to connect a large 120 VAC load to the output of a 120 / 240 VAC AC source, such as
a utility grid. This splits the current of the battery charger and 120 VAC loads onto both of the hot AC legs of the
AC source, reducing losses in the wiring. This is very useful if long wiring runs are involved.

The T240 can also be used to step down the voltage from a stacked pair of DR or SW series inverters. The
neutral of the T240 must be isolated from the inverters neutral for this configuration or the inverters may
overcurrent trip when they shift to synchronize to an AC generator. This may not allow compliance with the
National Electrical Code. Consult your local and national electrical codes for requirements.

Balancing Autotransformer with an Inverter / Charger and AC Loads

This is typically used to connect a single 120 VAC Trace inverter/charger to the output of a generator which has
120/240 VAC output. This prevents the generator from being imbalanced by the battery charger and any 120
VAC loads being operated. This results in higher battery charge rates and improved generator performance and
life. The loads can be on either or both legs of the generator and will be always balanced.
