Practical Travel Guide - 411

NAGOYA and
VICINITY
Nagoya, pop. 2,272,000 (as of Jan. 2014), the capital
of Aichi Prefecture, is conveniently located in the very heart of
central Japan, one of the nations key industrial zones. The
fourth largest city in Japan, Nagoya forms the core of industry
and tourism in the district. Industry within the city originally
centered around pottery-making. Today, however, the heavy
and chemical industries predominate as well as the traditional
light industries, producing cars, ships, rolling stock, machinery,
plastics, cloisonn, ceramics, timepieces, toys, woodworks,
musical instruments, and paper products. Historically, Nagoya
was a typical castletown of feudal Japan built in the 16th century. Ieyasu Tokugawa (15421616), founder of the Tokugawa
Shogunate, built the famous Nagoya Castle as a fortified residence for his son, whose descendants continued to reside there

until the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Nagoya is also the birthplace

of such great people in Japanese history as Nobunaga Oda
(15341582) and Hideyoshi Toyotomi (15361598), who
respectively united the whole of Japan under their influence. As
a tourist center, Nagoya abounds in places of scenic and historic
interests. Atsuta-jingu Shrine, Higashiyama Park with a zoo and
gardens, Nagoya Port, TV Tower, Tokugawa Art Museum,
Municipal Science Museum, Nittai-ji Temple, and subway shopping arcades are favorite sightseeing spots. Nagoya is also a concentration point of traffic in the central Japan region. It is the
junction of 4 principal JR Lines, namely, Shinkansen, Tokaido,
Chuo and Kansai Lines. Nagoya is well provided with excellent
private railway services operated.

CENTRAL JAPAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (CENTRAIR) & VICINITY

Chubu Centrair International Airport (Central Japan
International Airport) is located on an artificial island in Ise Bay,
south of Nagoya. The area of the airport is about 470 ha. and its
runway is 3,500 m long.
Great convenience for transit passengers
As international and domestic services are provided within the
same single terminal, it is especially recommended for foreign
passengers who transit from international to domestic flights
or vice versa to find their way easily without any hustle.
Attractive commercial zone
The airport has also attractive commercial zone Sky Town
which has many unique shops and restaurants. One of attractive relaxation facilities is a first observation hot-bath inside an
airport in Japan.
Quick and Easy Access
28 min. by limited express sky from Nagoya Sta. on
Meitetsu Line.
40-min. drive from downtown Nagoya.
45 min. by high-speed boat from Tsu, Mie Pref., the opposite
shore of Centrair.

Tokoname City, which sits across the water from

Centrair, has a long history of pottery production. Teapots made
of orange-colored earthenware are especially popular among
Japanese tourists. A short walk to the southeast of Tokoname
Sta. (about 40 min. by train to from Meitetsu Nagoya Sta.) is an
area dotted with old pottery kilns, factories and charming galleries. Walking along the winding, narrow paths, youll no doubt
discover sections made of reused pottery implements and products.
INAX Museums is a complex of museums and workshops
dedicated to the production of pottery. INAX is a major
Japanese company that produces tiling, building materials and
sanitary fixtures. Kiln Plaza holds one of the biggest kilns in
Japan. It was once used for baking clay pipes. Old Japanese
ceramic toilets are on display, as well as a number of terracotta
works that decorated Western-style buildings in Japan until the
beginning of 20th century. The Tile Museum exhibits a large
number of beautiful tiles collected from all over the world. Inside
the Permanent Exhibition Room, the museum has realistically
reproduced a number of historic tiled spaces, including an aweinspiring mosque ceiling. 5-min. bus ride on the Chita Bus from
Tokoname Sta. to the INAX Live Museum-mae Bus Stop. Open:
