Students are expected to abide by the Georgia Tech Honor Code and avoid any instances of academic
misconduct as stated in the code. Refer to www.honor.gatech.edu for the complete honor code text.
I consider the following behaviors cheating. If caught, you will receive a zero for the assignment/assessment
and may be reported to the Dean of Students, Office of Student Integrity. Be honest, do your own work and
there wont be a problem.
*learning what is on a test from someone who has already taken it
*using false excuse to delay taking a test/quiz
*copying from another student on a test/quiz/assignment with OR without their knowledge
*helping someone else cheat on a test/quiz/assignment
*using unauthorized notes for a test
*using electronic device (including cell phone) to obtain information during test
*working with others on an assignment when asked for individual work
*turning in work copied from another
*turning in work done by another
1

*fabricating or falsifying lab data

*copying material almost word for word from a written source without citation
*obtaining paper from term paper mill
No communicating of any type, verbal or nonverbal, is permitted during exams.
List adapted from McCabe, Donald. Cheating among college and university students: a North American
Perspective, International Journal for Educational Integrity, 1.1 (2005).
Course Guidelines /Expectations/Policies
1. T-Square will be used for all course postings: lecture slides (when available), announcements (changes in
schedule, reminders about upcoming dates, etc.), grades, additional reading assignments, etc.
Check for announcements on the T-Square course page often for latest information and/or
announcements.
You will receive an email when an announcement is posted. Pay attention to the emails from T-Square for
this class. Get the notes from T-Square and download them to your laptop or print them as soon as they
become available, then bring your laptop or printed notes to class.
Do not wait until a day or two before an exam to download the notes. Technology problems have been an
issue in the past, so get the notes/readings long before the exams and quizzes. I cannot be responsible for
technology problems.
2. Some assignments will be done on www.masteringhealthandnutrition.com, the textbook publishers
website. The code for registering for the site is in your new textbook, and may be used only once (therefore,
each student must register with his/her own code from a new text or purchase access online. See
instructions posted on T-square WHEN YOU REGISTER, USE YOUR GT EMAIL address, NOT your
personal (e.g. yahoo, gmail, etc) address.
3. The best way to contact me is through e-mail kevin.stevens@ap.gatech.edu. Please give me your name and
the class in which you are enrolled.
4. If you miss an exam you may take it at 25% penalty per day up to 2 days. After 2 days, there will be no
option to make it up. You may use this privilege only ONCE during the semester. NO makeups for quizzes.
5. In the case of an emergency that will require special consideration for missing a quiz, test or other deadline
without penalty, you must contact me within 24 hours AND provide documentation of your emergency. It is
your responsibility to arrange a makeup in a timely manner for anything youve missed.
6. If you know you will miss a test, quiz or deadline because of your involvement in a school-sponsored event
(e.g. athletic event, workshop, school related trip, etc.), contact me at least 5 days in advance to make
necessary arrangements to complete work missed. You may be asked to complete the work before your
absence, but this will depend on the situation.
7. ADAPTS students, please make arrangements with me at least 4 days in advance of a scheduled quiz or test
if you need special arrangements such as extra time. If you plan to take a test in the ADAPTS office, you
will need to schedule that 4 days in advance as well.
8. We will be using the 13th edition of the text. If you choose to use an earlier version, be aware that some
material has changed since earlier publications and you will be held responsible for material as it appears in
the 13th Ed.
9. Keep in mind that you earn your grade; I do not "give" it to you.
To do well in this class:
2

Complete reading assignments (chapter assignments and additional readings) before class, as this will
facilitate your intake of the material presented in class.
Come to class regularly, pay attention, and take notes.
Get the notes from T-Square and download them to your laptop or print them as soon as they become
available, then bring your laptop or printed notes to class. They should assist with note taking.
I strongly suggest you meet a few people in this class so you can share notes. This will be especially
useful if you miss class and need to get caught up. Share contact info with them.
Complete your assignments on time, do some extra credit.
Study for tests by reading the assigned chapters (the general text as well as the special boxes and
illustrations in each chapter), reading assignments/viewing videos posted on T-Square, reviewing
quizzes and reviewing lecture notes.

Follow these tips and you will learn a great deal about your health and well being, and earn a good grade
while doing so.
Classroom behavior
* Cell phone use of any sort is prohibited in class. Please turn off your phone or silence it before class starts
and keep it in your pocket or backpack.
* Personal conversations during class are disruptive to students around you and often to me. Please refrain from
such conversations.
* Laptops may be used in class for APPH 1040 class-related activity only.
*Any type of video and/or sound recordings REQUIRE the explicit permission of the instructor/lecturer.
*If you arrive late or must leave early, please do so quietly and do not disturb others. Do not make a habit of
either.
*Buzz cards and a dark (#2) pencil are required for all exams.
*I expect that each of you will be respectful of each other and of the instructor. I will do the same.
Just in case this doesnt happen, I reserve the right to DEDUCT UP TO 5 POINTS FROM the grade of ANY
STUDENT WHO IS DISRUPTIVE AND/OR DISRESPECTFUL to me or classmates.
