PART I DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

Project Description:
The National Bank of Kuwait Headquarters is new 300 meter tall steel structure. The main tower will be
complemented by two additional structures; a bank branch and museum. The project is aiming for
LEED Gold certification. The project is divided into several phases. The first phase will involve
2

preparing the site for the construction of the new tower. The following phases will involve the
construction of all three structures. Though the potential environmental impacts of the later phases
must be considered, the first phase is considered to be the most disruptive to the environment.
Generally Construction waste will arise on a Project mainly from: (Excavation/ Demolition /Unavoidable
construction work/Material surpluses/Damaged materials)
The work generally will consist of The construction of 5.970 m 2 of.
Construction Estimated time will take :
3.5 years
The main waste categories as of its material types and streams are as follow:
1-Construction Targeted Recyclables (Packaging/metals/plastics/and glass)
2-Construction Reinforcements Steel Rebars
3-Construction Hardcore Waste ABCs
4-Construction Non- recyclables
5-Construction Workforce trash and waste
6-Construction Hazardous Waste
7-Construction Job Site offices waste (Paper/metals/plastics/glass/Kitchen&general waste)
Site Description

The project site is located in the Sharq district of Kuwait City, Kuwait. The site is bound to the north
by Al-Hilali Street and to the East by Jaber Al-Mubarak Street. The surrounding area is highly
urbanized with several skyscrapers in proximity to the site. The site was previously cleared and
prepped for another construction project that did not follow through.

TOTAL

PART lV - WASTE MANAGEMENT GOAL

Waste Management Goals:

This project will recycle or salvage for reuse a minimum of 75% by weight of the waste generated
on-site.
6

Waste reduction will be achieved through building design, and reuse and recycling efforts will be
maintained throughout the construction process.
After assuring the full coverage of all wasting types in terms a separate and weighed collection,
and with all possible supporting tools (Containers/weighing tools/ site personnel/and awareness)
,then Waste Calculation results will be under a continuous verification every month to reach
more compliance with the LEED goal of maximum diverting from land fill, all non-recyclables will
be more worked out more and more to explore ways of reusing, salvaging, or recycling.

Evaluation Plan:
Ahamdiah Contracting Co. as the GC developed, Signage addressing the recycling on site , it
will be more developed to incorporate progress to date for achieving the projects waste
recycling goal of 75% or more by weight of the total project waste stream.
Waste General Foreman has a Construction Forms as a waste log, to record every waste
diversion from site, in terms of its weight, every material type has a separate form for logging.
All will be compiled together in the end of the month for Waste calculation results.

PART lV - PROPOSAL FOR MINIMAZATION, REUSE WASTE ON SITE

Waste Prevention Planning: (to be monthly updated)
1. The remaining concrete every casting event, is being used from concrete pump, to cast a
containment concrete bunds all around excavation shoring to control most of potential pollution
sources on site such as dewatering pumps, oil and fuel drums, control oil leak to discharge to
the top soil, and a service area
2. Glass panels, Paving, tiles is procured following the bases of modularity in construction
7

3. Polyethylene pipes longs, are being chosen to minimize the cutting to the most possible, all
remaining cutting will be weighed and returned to the supplier.
4. Steel rebars where considered in design so to assure the lowest waste estimates.
5. All wooden members used in excavation will be used future projects of ACTC so it will be
returned to stores.
6. All segregated materials containers will be expected to be reused again in construction,
specially steel reinforcements cuttings.
7. In the first phases of the project land clearing are being used in land filling , as a p art of the cut
and fill works, for the land grading to stabilize site slopes, required for LEED ESC Plan.
o metal cans
The Construction Waste Reduction Plan is already implemented and executed as follows and
as on the chart:
o Salvageable materials will be diverted from disposal where feasible.
o There will be a designated area on the construction site reserved for a row of
dumpsters each specifically labeled for respective materials to be received.
o Before proceeding with any removal of construction materials from the
construction site, Recycling Coordinators will inspect containers for compliance .
o Wood cutting will occur in centralized locations to maximize reuse and make
collection easier.
o Hazardous waste will be managed by a licensed hazardous waste vendor.
ACTC will conduct a pre-award meeting for subcontractors. Subcontractors under consideration
will be required to attend the meeting to review project goals and requirements with the project
team. Attendance will be a prerequisite for award of subcontracts. A sign-off will be required by
subcontractors attending the meeting that the project goals are understood. This document will
be an attachment to every subcontract. Copies of the attachment will be posted prominently at
the jobsite.

PART VII- COMUNICATION ,TRAINING, AND THE MOTOVATION PLAN

Communication & Education Plan:
ACTC (General Contractor) will conduct an on-site pre-construction meeting with subcontractors.
Attendance will be required for the subcontractors key field personnel. The purpose of the meeting is to
reinforce to subcontractors key field employees the commitments made by their companies with regard
to the project goals and requirements.
Waste prevention and recycling activities will be discussed at the beginning of each weekly
subcontractor coordination meeting to reinforce project goals and communicate progress to date.
Once a subcontractor comes on site, the recycling coordinator will present himself with a copy of
the NBK Construction Waste Management Plan and will provide a tour of the recycling areas.
The subcontractor will be expected to make sure all their crews comply with the Waste
Management Plan.
9

All recycling containers are clearly labeled. Containers are located in close proximity to excavation
hole in which recyclables/salvageable materials will be placed.
Lists of acceptable/unacceptable materials will be posted throughout the site.
All subcontractors will be informed in writing of the importance of non-contamination with other
materials or trash.
Recycling coordinator and his team shall inspect the containers on a weekly basis to insure that no
contamination is occurring and precautions shall also be taken to deter any contamination by the
public.
A jobsite Graphics boards, will be mounted for acceptable and non-acceptable items for
recycling, and also in a ways of (Does and Donts)
A jobsite Graphics boards, will be mounted for Hazardous waste Storage areas, and all
safety requirements for any ignitable materials.

Recycling containers are clearly labeled to assure separate collection

Site board addressing the recycling plan

Motivation Plan:
The project team will develop and publish a project mission statement that can be distributed to
the subcontractors, attached to subcontracts, and posted at the jobsite.

*2 Hazardous waste as (Sealants, paint, coating, and adhesives) including the two grades of hazardous if toxic or ignitable;
all have been planned to be handled by authorized haz vendor, handling procedures will include separate methods for solid,
and liquids waste, in addition to the proper ways of storage as instructed in the all materials data of each material. More
information and numbers/values at Rev02

Estimates of General construction waste, is only representing those materials which came out of construction field
building components , an estimate of 16 tons / month, Basis of estimating is to give logic values, that will turned to exact at
following months #

*4

The counted number of organic/municipal waste is based yet only on site workforce personnel as 300 in day, 100 night, as
100 gram/person/day gives in total 40 kg/day and 1.2 tons/month and finally gives 46.1 tons in the 3.5 years, taking in
consideration that values for office staffs as personal trash or kitchen waste needs to be added. In rev02 #
