CHAPTER 1- SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS

Note:
Difference
between
solving
Equations4 & 5.
Use
Multiplicative
inverse to
solve
#10 & 13.
In #10, multiply
by 15/2
on both sides..

Writing an equation from a story

#14 Area of a rectangle, A = lw
55.8 = 4.5l
Divide both sides by 4.5
4.5
4.5
12.4 = l

Combining like terms, the solving an equation; # 1 - 6

using distributive property, then solving an equation; # 5 & 6
Writing and solving an equation - # 7
3x + x + 20 + 44 = 180 write an equation, then solve

Solving equations with variables on both sides # 3 8

Writing and solving an equation from a story
Plan A = y = 0.25x + 15
Plan B = y = 0.05x + 20; for the cost to be the same
0.25x + 15 = 0.05x + 20 (variables on both sides)
Solve.

Standard form to slope intercept form

Rewriting the formula example

A = 1/2bh (multiplicative inverse of is 2/1 )
2A = bh
( divide both sides by h )
2A = h
h

Chapter 2 Graphing and Writing Linear Equations

Linear relationships - # 3, 4 & 7 proportional relationships,

because y-intercept is 0 (graphs of proportional relationships
pass through the point of origin.)

Use slope formula; m = y2 y1 = 4 (-4) = 8 = 4

x2 x1 1 (-1) 2

When x goes up by 2, y goes up by 3,

So when x goes up by 1, y goes up by 1.5
Slope = 1.5; it is the constant rate of change.

In an equation in the slope-intercept form,

the co-efficient of x is SLOPE
The constant is the y-INTERCEPT

If equation is not in slope intercept form,

write in slope - intercept form
and then graph. Same as solving for y in Chapter 1.

a. Y-intercept means, x = 0; meaning the # of apples is 0

10y = 110
y = 11; y-intercept is (0,11)
b. X-intercept means, y = 0; meaning the # of oranges is 0
5x = 110
x = 21;
x-intercept is (21,0)
c. An orange contains 10 grams of fiber
d. An apple contain=s 5 grams of fiber
e. It is not possible for package to contain 15 apples.WHY???

Making sense of numbers

(0,0) = 0 seconds, 0 in. of water in bucket
(5.15) = 5 seconds, 15 in. of water In bucket

Point-Slope Form y - y1 = m(x x1)

#3 = (y 3) = 1/3(x (-6))
(y 3) = 1/3(x + 6)

Parallel lines have the same slope but different y-intercept will never intersect;
equations with NO SOLUTION
1. So a line parallel to y = 2x + 5 will also have a slope of 2 and
will pass through (1, -4)
Y = mx + b
Substitute all known values from above
-4 = 2(1) + b
-4 = 2 + b
-6 = b
So a line parallel to y = 2x +5 and passing through (1,-4) is

y = 2x - 6

The product of the slopes of Perpendicular lines equals -1

equations with ONE SOLUTION (one point of intersection)
6. So a line perpendicular to y = 1/5x + 2 will have a slope of -5 because
1/5 x -5 = -1
Y = mx + b
Substitute all known values from above
4 = -5(2) + b
4 = -10+ b
15 = b
So a line perpendicular to y = 1/5x +2 and passing through (2,4) is

y = -5x + 15

CHAPTER 3 - SOLVING LINEAR INEQUALITIES

Solve the inequality by using

addition or subtraction

Solve the inequality by

using
Multiplication or division

NOTE:

#7.

-7< 3x - 4 8

-1 < x 4

add 4
divide by 3

#12.

y 3x 0
y 3x
Graph a line for the equation y = 3x, slope = 3, y-intercept = 0
Line will be a solid line because y 3x
