The Essence
of the Epiphany

e started the first day of the

New Year by celebrating the
Motherhood of Mary - the Mother
of God, Who gave birth to The Infant Jesus,
God the Fathers only begotten Son, on
Christmas day.
On this first Sunday of 2015, we turn
our eyes on Gods people, Jews and Gentiles,
who have come to pay homage to the Infant
Jesus and His Mother, Mary, who was beside
Him in the manger.
The simple shepherds of the
surrounding countryside were the newborn
Infant Jesus first visitors, summoned from
the fields by angels from Heaven as they
watched their sheep.
Now come the Magi from the east. They
saw His star at its rising, sign that the King of
the Jews has been born, and they have come
to pay homage to him, bringing gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh. Our modern world
calls this visit of the Magi as the Epiphany
of our Lord. (Mt. 2:1-12)
In the tradition of the early Christian
Church, the Magi were known to be
astrologers, they were pagans, in fact, and

no mention was made of the number who

visited the Infant Jesus, but they were
given the names Caspar, Balthasar, and
Melchior. During this period, baptism of
new Christians were done mostly at Easter
and on the Feast of the Epiphany, and the
blessed water from the baptisms were also
customarily sprinkled on the doorposts
of the faithful, over which were written
the initials C+B+M acronym for Christus
Bendicat Mansionem (Christ blesses this
house). Over time, these initials became the
first letters of the names given to the Magi.
The word Epiphany comes from
the Greek word epiphania, which
means manifestation or revelation, or
appearance. The birth of the Infant Jesus
is the manifestation or fulfillment of the Old
Testament prophecy in Isaiah 60:1-6 that
foretells the coming birth of the Messiah, the
Light of the World sent by God the Father
to earth to save mankind from Original Sin.
Epiphany was originally celebrated
in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox
Churches to herald the birth of the promised
Messiah, and was known to these churches

as Theophany. It was introduced to the

Roman Church in the second half for the
sixth century and became known today as
the Epiphany.
The Epiphany of the Eastern churches
is the equivalent of the Western churchs
celebration of Christmas both herald
the coming of the promised Savior.
Whereas Christmas is a feast of the entire
Christendom, the Epiphany is the great
special feast of the Catholic Church.
In the Philippines, up to the 1960s, the
Feast of the Three Kings was a big event,
especially for children, who received gifts
not only on Christmas eve, but also on
the Feast of the Three Kings on January
6. Today, the Feast of the Epiphany has
become a celebration held on the Sunday
after the Feast of the Holy Family.
The Epiphany centers on three events
in the life of Jesus: the adoration of the Magi;
the Baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan; and
Jesus first miracle at the wedding in Cana.
Great Importance is also given to Marys
role in the feast of the Epiphany, where, in

ANG SAKRAMENTO SANG EUKARISTIYA

a sini nga isyu sang Candle Light,

akon padayunon ang pagpaathag
sang pagtulon-an sang aton Simbahan
nahanungod sa mga Sakramento. Akon na
natapos ang pagpaathag nahanungod sa
Sakramento sang Bunyag kag Pagkompirma.
Kag karon, hatagan naton sing pagtamod
ang Sakramento sang Eukaristiya. Upod sa
Sakramento sang Bunyag kag Kompirma,
ang Sakramento sang Eukaristiya nagabugos sa ginatawag nga Sacraments of
Initiation.
Ano ang Sakramento sang Eukaristiya?
Masami naton mabatian nga ginasiling: Ang
Eukaristiya amo ang ginahalinan kag ang
putok-putokan sang bug-os nga kabuhi nga
Kristiano. Apang ano gid ang luyag silingon
sini? Ang Eukaristiya amo ang paagi sang
pagsimba sa Dios sang mga Katoliko bilang
katapo sang Lawas ni Kristo nga amo
ang Simbahan. Ang Eukaristiya amo ang
handumanan sang sakripisyo ni Kristo, ang
sakramento sang panihapon sang Ginuo
kag ang sentro sang presensya ni Kristo.
Sa iban nga tinaga, ang Eukaristiya sarang
makabig sa idalom sang tatlo ka dimensyon:
1) Sakripisyo, 2) Pagkaon, kag 3) Presensya.
Bilang sakripisyo, ang Eukaristiya amo
ang Santos nga Misa; bilang pagkaon, ang
Eukaristiya amo ang Santos nga Pagkalawat,
kag bilang presensya, ang Eukaristiya amo
ang Santisimo Sakramento nga yara sa
tabernakulo sang aton mga simbahan.
Sa pangkabilogan, daku gid ang
paghangad sang Katoliko nga Pilipino sa
Selebrasyon Eukaristika, ang Santos nga
Misa. Ang kinaandan nga kabuhi sa parokya,

ang iya mga nagakalainlain nga mga bulohaton

espiritwal, sosyal kag pagpangalagad, nagalibot sa
Eukaristiya. Ang mga selebrasyon sa panimalay, mga
anibersaryo sa kasal kag pagkamatay, sa masunson
ginapamisahan. Pati gani ang mga pagtililipon sosyal,
mga miting, kombensyon kag iban pa nga pagtililipon
nagasugod ukon nagatapos sa Misa. Sarang masiling
nga ang Santos nga Misa amo ang pinakakinaandan
nga bulohaton relihiyoso sang Pilipino sa bagay nga
kon kaisa, daw pasapayan na lang ang pagkabig sa
sini kag nadula na ang iya matuod nga kahulogan.
Sarang man masiling nga sa karon nga mga
panahon, ang pagtamod sang mga Katoliko sa
Santos nga Misa nag-ayo man. Ang pagselebrar
sini sa tumandok nga lengwahe, ang partisipasyon
sang mga laiko bilang manugbasa, manugsirbe kag
manugkanta nakabulig gid agud nga ang Santos nga
Misa nangin timaan sang isa ka pagpakig-ambitanay
sang komunidad. Ugaling may mga lugar man sa diin
bangod sang kakulang sang mga kaparian, madamo
ang indi makasimba. May mga nagasimba man
nga lain ang ila katuyuan sa pagsimba, halimbawa
bangud lang sa pagtuman sang obligasyon sa
pagsimba kag agud makalikaw sa pagpakasala, ukon
bangud kay luyag lang nga dayawon sang iban, ukon
nadala sang barkada.
Amo ini ang kabangdanan kon ngaa
kinahanglanon gid ang husto nga paghangop sa
Sakramento sang Eukaristiya. Sa masunod nga
mga isyu sang Candle Light, amo ini ang akon

isa ka mahigugmaon nga ihibalo nahanungod
sa Eukaristiya amo ang makatulod sa Pilipino
nga Katoliko nga magmangin mainit pa gid ang

ebanghelisasyon kag transpormasyon sosyal.

Certainty of Uncertainties

t is said that our lives are made of days

and nights, of seasons and years, for we
are part of a universe of sun and moon,
planets and stars. We mark ends and we
make beginnings.
As we inaugurate this New Year, 2015,
we praise and thank God for the grace and
mercy that fill our days. We call to mind
the countless blessings and graces we have
received and we realize that God is always
with us. He never abandons us. He never
forsakes us. Though we may be in the
valley of darkness as we are not exempt
from facing problems and challenges, our
Lord never failed to give us strength so
that we may overcome and survive lifes
difficulties. With this, we thank the Lord
for his faithful accompaniment.
As we look forward for the days,
weeks and months to come, what is certain
are the uncertainties. We do not know
what will happen tomorrow. We dont have
an idea of what will happen next week and
next month though we have plans in mind.
Every thing may be dark. Every thing may
be uncertain. Every thing may be unknown.

In this reality, we realize that faith is so

important and necessary. For we walk by
faith not by sight! When Mary and Joseph,
responded yes to the will of God, they
did not know what would be in store for
them. But what they did was to put their
faith and trust in God. Theirs is an example
of walking in faith, not by sight which we
must emulate or follow.
Let me share with you a short
anecdote. It goes like this: I said to the
man who stood at the gate of the year. Give
me a light that I may tread safely into the
unknown. And he replied, Go out into
the darkness and put your hand into the
hand of God. That shall be to you better
than light and safer than a known way. So
I went forth, finding the hand of God, trod
gladly into the night.
As we begin this year and as we
celebrate today the Epiphany, let us not
be afraid to journey into the darkness and
offer our lives to the Lord as our gift to
Him. Rather than being afraid, let us allow
God to hold our hands in which we are safe
and secure. Let us trust God who holds us
lovingly and cares for us now and always!

The old Parochial House was an oasis

for the weary parishioner. It was here
where I went to whenever I needed to see
welcoming faces and the Candle Light
office was where could find these.
The old parochial House was also a
treasure-house of kindness. It was here
where Bishop Gerry Alminaza lent me the
book Recuerdos de Filipinas 1895 where
I discovered so much information about
the richness of Iloilo culture during the
Spanish period. It was also here where
Msgr. Andy Esperancilla approached me
to confer about the article Lapidas of
Jaro Cathedral and gave me Additiona
info. Lt was here where Msgr. Nonoy
Masculino gave me valuable advices via
spiritual counseling, Thanks to his more
than three years stint in New York for
higher studies. So many more happy
remembrances are to be reminisced
here. I look forward to the completion of
the new Parochial House, so that more
parishioners can find their own spiritual
oases within.

New Youth Ministry Officers Take Oath

ecember 16, 2014 is the

first day of Aguinaldo
Mass and the day that we
celebrate the National Youth
Day. Here in Tabuc Suba it was
the first official day of the Youth
Ministry Officers. Twelve newly
elected youth members who
will lead the young people of
this barangay took their oath
and were formally introduced to
the community by Fr. Nathaniel
Gentizon, the Parish Youth
Director, during the Aguinaldo
Mass at Our Lady of Salvation
Chapel.
Our new Youth Coordinator
is Mark
Redan Victoriano,
a college student of West
Visayas State University taking
up BSPED with his Assistant
Youth
Coordinator
Justine
Adrian Deocampo, his cousin
who is taking up Electronics
Engineering at the Western
Visayas College of Science and
Technology and who is actively
serving as an altar knight here in
our Parish.
Victoriano said that As a
newly elected Youth Coordinator, my goal is to encourage
more young people to join this
ministry and get involved in the
activities and projects that we
plan for the start of the year. I
will also find means to help the

school, The goal of the Youth
Ministry for this year is to render more service that could answer the problems of the youth.

2014With just a few days left
before the world says goodbye to
2014, the head of the Catholic Bishops
Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)
expresses confidence that the coming
year 2015 will be like no other, especially
when the faithful strives to place the Lord
at its center.
The Year 2015 is a Year of the Lord
as every year really belongs to the Lord.
Let us make it truly the year of the Lord
by living each day praising Him, thanking
Him, loving Him and following Him
forever, shares Archbishop Socrates B.
Villegas in his New Year message.
According to him, while 2015 could
be another regular year in the calendar, it
can be an extraordinary one.
If we put much love into each day
of this year; if we put much hope into
every difficulty we encounter this year;
if we share fearlessly with everyone our
joyful faith in our loving God; this year
may be ordinary but it will be specially
memorable one because of the love and
faith and hope that we pour into the days
of 2015, he states.
The Year 2015 is also the Year of
Consecrated Life for the Catholic Church
worldwide. It is an invitation for us to
thank the Lord for the gift of religious

The Lingayen-Dagupan prelate notes that
2015 is also the Year of the Poor for the Catholic
Church in the Philippines, which is fourth in

all are! In our poverty, the Lord is our treasure,

he Year of Consecrated Life begins Sunday,

and the Holy See announced that Pope
Francis is conceding plenary indulgences
for the year was announced in Vatican City last
November 28, 2014
With the customary conditions (sacramental
confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer in
keeping with the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff)
the indulgences are conceded to all members of
the institutes of consecrated life and other truly
repentant faithful moved by a spirit of charity,
starting from the first Sunday of Advent this year
until 2 February 2016, the day of the closure of the
Year of Consecrated Life. The indulgence may also
be offered for departed souls in Purgatory.
Indulgence may be obtained:
- In Rome, in participation in the international
meetings and celebrations established in the
calendar of the Congregation for the Institutes of
Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic
Life, and pious reflection on for a suitable period
of time, concluding with the Lords Prayer, the
Profession of Faith in any legitimate approved
form, and invocations of the Virgin Mary;
- In all the particular Churches, during the
days devoted to consecrated life in the diocese, and
during diocesan celebrations organised for the
Year of Consecrated Life, by visiting the cathedral
or another sacred place designated with the
consent of the Ordinary of the place, or a convent
church or oratory of a cloistered monastery, and

publicly reciting the Liturgy of the Hours

or through a suitable period of time of
devout reflection, concluding with the
Lords Prayer, the Profession of Faith in
any legitimate approved form, and pious
invocations of the Virgin Mary.
Members of the Institutes of
Consecrated Life who, on account of
ill health or other serious reasons are
prevented from visiting these sacred
places, may nonetheless receive Plenary
Indulgence if, completely detached from
any type of sin and with the intention
of being able to fulfil the three usual
conditions as soon as possible, devoutly
carry out the spiritual visit and offer their
illness and the hardships of their life to
God the merciful through Mary, with the
addition of the prayers as above.
To facilitate this access to divine
grace by means of pastoral charity, the
Apostolic Penitentiary Cardinal Mauro
Piacenza, who signed the decree, asks
that the canons, members of the Chapter,
the priests of the Institutes of Consecrated
Life and all others able to hear confessions
offer themselves willingly and generously
to the celebration of the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and regularly administer
Holy Communion to the sick.

Virgin Mary is the human reflection of this

Light from which we receive so many graces.
For this reason, our Epiphany Is an invitation
to salvation through Jesus, and also in Jesus
through the intercession of His Mother
Mary. We Catholics are indeed boundlessly
fortunate. This is a grace that non-Catholics
fail to understand and refuse to understand.
The Feast of the Epiphany of our Lord
signals God the Fathers invitation to mankind
that salvation is available to all Jews and
Gentiles, pagans and Christians, and all
peoples of the earth. Our Catholic Catechesis
tells us that we are the Gentiles of today,
not originally chosen by God, but have been
invited to participate in His gift of salvation.

Jesus. We visit the Infant Jesus in our hearts
where he dwells and continues to light our
lives and speaks to us in our hearts.
In sincerely praying to Jesus, we visit Him
at any time of the day, we gift Him an offering
that He never refuses; in participating in the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and in receiving

Him in the Holy Eucharist, we offer Him the

highest, purest, and most pleasing gift that
we can give.
In the Holy Eucharist, which is the Holy
Communion, Jesus offers His greatest gift to
us His Body and Blood.
Having journeyed faithfully with Him
throughout our lives to what we have
become today as Catholics, we become like
the Magi from the east, bringing to Him our
gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh in
the form of our faith, hope, and love, and
physically manifested in our charity to all.

he Christmas season that lasts until

Sunday is the feast of the Three
Kings is a time for gift-giving. The
three kings; Gaspar, Melchor and Balthazar,
all from the East, had brought to Jesus on the
night of His nativity, gold, frankincense and
myrrh. They were symbolic of His richness
in blessings His sufferings for the love of
man, His acceptance.
Today, this is not only enough to give
cash, food, or material things. The gifts of
sincere fraternity shown through prayers,
charity, thoughtfulness, cooperation and
other positive values are what we need.
If we have hurt somebody, let us offer
him a gift of reconciliation. If we have looked
down upon somebody because we are richer
and higher in status, let us do something to
revive his feelings of trust. If we close our
doors to beggars and the needy, let us open
our doors to them now. If we ridicule the
ignorant and the uneducated, let us teach
them through words and actions the right
thing to do during difficult circumstances.
Let us give our used clothing and some food

and gave them food.
Christmas is not the only time for giftgiving. Any time is the best time especially if
it is given to those who are in dire need.
On the afternoon of December 23, God
the Father gave a very beautiful gift to a sick
woman in our neighborhood. Her daughter
came to ask for prayers for her mother who
was scheduled for an operation in her arm and
left leg because of weak bones. Immediately,
we prayed to God the Father and pleaded
with Him to heal her mother. A wonderful
gift came from the Father to all mankind. The
attending physician was surprised when on
the scheduled time that she was brought to
the operating room, everything was normal.
In thanksgiving, the family attended the
midnight Mass and promised to pray to the
Father always.
Give to the needy in material, physical
and spiritual needs, you will never regret.
You give what you can, and you receive more
from Gods hand.

There is no better time than the present to
accomplish some of your bigger goals. Spend
some time thinking about your dreams and
brainstorm some of the steps you need to take
to get there. Clarity is key - when your mind is
determined and clear about the path you need
to be on, you really can accomplish anything!

environment to assess the state of our minds,
bodies and spirits. We can do a complete inner
and outer inventory.
Embrace Simplicity
Take inventory of your possessions. Do
you have too much stuff? Too much clothing,
too many pairs of shoes, too many decoration
in your home? These material possessions are
often purchased on an impulse and end up
cluttering up space in your life. Reduce what
you have in your home and donate it. Not only
will you feel lighter; your home will have better
energy with less blocks, making for more
peaceful slumber and joyous times. In addition
to the personal benefits, you will also be
helping others in need if you choose to donate!
Surrender
Focus your energy on going with the flow
rather than fighting uphill battles. Spending
time alone in nature, meditating, or even just
quiet time in contemplation can help you to
pinpoint areas in your life where you may be
resisting. Once you identify the situations that
are draining you of valuable positive energy,
you can allow yourself to accept rather than
try to change them. When you surrender,
freedom abounds.

must remember is that all things come from
God and we have no right to keep everything
for ourselves.
Today, while mosquitoes, flies, and other
insects spread diseases, the councilors led
by the Barangay Captain, and the Association
of Senior Citizens led by President Subese,
in Brgy. Balabag, Pavia, Iloilo with the
cooperation of the Rural Health Unit, gave
free immunization vaccines in pneumonia
and flu, led by Judy Hollero who registered
the recipients and gave their members. It
was a real blessing to those who were old
and weak and for those who lack money for
transportation.
Three days ago, my daughter, with the
help of some parents from Assumption
and Sacred Heart School, joined hands in
gift-giving. Rice, used clothing with some
new ones, soap, groceries and fruits were
distributed to those who came. It was
touching to see them cradling give-aways.
Two parents brought two kids with them;
a fourth-grader and a second-grader. When

to the fact that we have so much to give. It is
not just about donating money to charities,
it is about utilizing whatever we have to help

you know - and dont know! Co-workers,
acquaintances, the cashier at the grocery
story; pull out all the stops. This is a lifechanging act. By being kind to those you
encounter, you will be fostering more
kindness, and the world can certainly afford
to have more kind citizens.
