Carnegie: A Legend
By: JORDAN DELGADO
Andrew Carnegie, the founder and
owner of the Carnegie Steel
company, was a great
philanthropist and had many
groundbreaking ideas. He also
strongly believed in world peace.

capable of carrying two people,
powered by a small gas motor. This
proved to be the future of
transportation for the wealthy. The
new motorized carriage showed
how to eliminate all of the issues
with horse-drawn carriages, but the
model at the time was still quite
inconvenient. The motor was near
deafening, along with the strong
odor of gasoline, something that a
high class lady or man should not
have to endure.
The many issues that arose
with the Motorwagen made it so
that the invention was not yet ready
for the streets of New York. The

No matter the counts against
it, the Benz Patent Motorwagen was
by far the most innovative invention
in transportation for the high class
in the late 1800s. It would even be
fair to say that this vehicle was the
first step towards changing the way
the wealthy traveled. Today, many

future for generations to come.

In 1869, the National Woman
Suffrage Association was founded
by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth
Cady Stanton to push the U.S.
Constitution for a woman suffrage
amendment. Another organization,
the American Woman Suffrage
Association, led by Lucy Stone,
was formed in the same year to
work through the state legislatures.
In 1890, these two groups were
united as the National American
Woman Suffrage Association. That
year, Wyoming became the first
state to grant women the right to
vote.
In 1916 the National
Woman's Party, formed in 1913 at
the Congressional Union for
Woman Suffrage, decided to adopt
a more abstract approach to woman
suffrage. Instead of lobbying, the
members picketed the White House,
marched, and staged acts of civil
disobedience.

A LOOK BACK AT
THE TREATY OF
VERSAILLES

By: CHARLES GRYDER

With the recent signing of the
Treaty of Versailles, on June 28 of
this year, it feels right to take a look
back at what this treaty means. The
treaty itself, ending the Great War,
was signed by the Germans and the
Allied Powers. It contains many
terms, most of them against the
German people. A lot of land was
taken from Germany, most of it
being given to surrounding
countries, such as Belgium and
France.
Germany has an impending
recession on their hands. The treaty
also prohibited Germany from
uniting with Austria, further
eliminating its economic options. In
terms of Germanys mental state,
the treaty required the nation to
admit full responsibility for the war.
This also means that Germany must
claim liability for all of the other
involved nations war debts, further
crippling the nations economy. The
final number assigned for Germany
to pay has been set at 6,600

The last major component of the

treaty was the creation of something
called the League of Nations, an
organization designed to protect and
enforce world peace in an attempt
to prevent another Great War. This
seems like the most promising
component of the treaty. It is a good
step towards disassembling any
possibility of a nation or group
causing as much harm to the world
as has been done in the past 5 years.
As we look towards the future, keep
in mind that we must all work
together to keep ourselves safe, and
may we pray that no other conflict
of this nature will ever arise.

BOSTON - For many years,
Newport residents have been

Frederick Law Olmsted, beloved

willing to work long hours for less
pay. This on its own creates some
natural competition between the
immigrants and the lower white

But,
this

population cannot be like the upper

to do so. They will never be

However there was chatter that the

Gibsons interpretation of the New

The Gibson Girl collection
marked the creation of a new
fashion in the modern world. An art
that was interesting, unique, and
widely accepted. The Gibson Girl
collection was realistic, and when
one looked at it, he or she felt as
though the girls had a soul, a mind,
and a heart. Authors like Henry
James practiced realistic writing
and Charles Dana Gibson practiced
realistic fashion in his Gibson Girl
collection. Realism in art is

Journalists were allowed inside the

Carnegie ran his factory with

In this sense, Carnegie left a legacy

Carnegie implemented a system of
cooling and heating for his mansion
by having outside air brought in to
be heated or cooled to the desired
temperature for the house. Carnegie
was also very fuel efficient. In his
mansion, he had miner's carts that
carried coal along a railroad track
from a massive bin to three large
boilers. On a typical winter day, it
took two tons of coal to heat the
house.
