The rational is to be 300 words on the director Concept/Vision which explain the basics of the
play, and the intended vision of the director.
You will need to refer to the basics of the play which should cover no more than 50-75 words:
The rest of the rational is used to explain the directors vision/concept using the remaining 225250 words. Questions to consider are:
DIRECTORS FOLIO
You have an allotted 3500 words to complete a Directors Folio containing detailed information
on the vision, including images that support your design concepts. The folio needs to contain
the following:
An analysis of the text and discussion on the research and how it has influenced
the ideas presented.
A statement about the intended experience for the audience. What are they going
to experience, why and how do you intend to achieve this?
A detailed discussion on the concept/vision, integrating the dramatic and
theatrical elements. This is basically, what you are going to do and how you are
going to do it (intent and approach). It is an extension of the rational.
A discussion and explanation of the key theatrical elements (e.g. is the set a large
factor in creating the concept), features, effects (what is the impact of the
theatrical elements) or images (Images refers to themes and ideas presented to
the audience) which contribute to dramatic meaning. Both traditional Kabuki and
what you intend to use and why.
The approach you intend to take when working with actors in rehearsal: How
will rehearsals be structured, what will go on in rehearsal time, for how long and
any particular drama and theatre conventions to be used in achieving goals. You
may, if word count allows, add a simple rehearsal schedule.
