Pope brings message

to Southeast Asia
POPE PAUL VI was first Vicar of
Christ to set foot on a Southeast
Asian soil in 1970. His 10-day
pilgrimage included West Asia,
Oceania and Australia.
Birth name: Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini
Reigning years: 1963-1978
Visit in PH: Nov. 27-29, 1970
Age during his visit: 73 years old
PHILIPPINE ITINERARY:
Nov. 27 Manila Cathedral and Malacaang Palace
Nov. 28 University of Santo Tomas and Rizal Park
Nov. 29 Quezon City Memorial Circle, Radio Veritas station
and Tondo, Manila
HIGHLIGHTS OF PAPAL VISIT

ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT. Paul VI survived an assassination attempt moments after he alighted from the plane at the
then Manila International Airport. Assassin Benjamin Mendoza,
a 35-year-old Bolivian painter disguised as a priest, he lunged at
the Pope with a 13-inch kris. The Pope sustained minor wounds
on his chest-which was only revealed nine years after a total silence on the attack.
RADIO VERITAS. The Pope also lead the inauguration of
Radio Veritas, the international Catholic shortwave radio station
operated by the Asian Bishops Federation. This mission of
bringing Christ and his Church close to the men and women of
Asia belongs not only to the hierarchy, the priests and the religious brothers and sisters, but to each one of you, Our dear
Catholic sons and daughters of the different nations which We
are now addressing, the Pope said in his radio message.
NOTE: Pope Paul VI was beatified on 19 October 2014.

Celebs share acts of contrition

in preparation for Papal visit
John Arcilla

By Dolly Anne Carvajal

S we eagerly await the papal visit,

I cornered some celebs and asked:
If theres one thing you could ask
forgiveness for from God through Pope
Francis, what would your act of contrition
be like? Mine would be for loving so much, that I forget to love myself.
This topic reminds me of a
funny quote: We pay for all
our sins, so always ask for a receipt. And this one: Every
saint has a past and every sinner has a future.
After the holiday revelry, its
time to be still. May we become
less worldly to be more worthy
of heavens abundant gifts.

clables. Weve been made stewards of these gifts by God and

we need to show a bit of respect, love and care. It saddens
me that I havent done enough
to rectify this, but I know it
takes more than just one person. It is an issue I am very
much aware of, but all I can do
is get even more frustrated and
infuriated. For this, I apologize.

Id ask Pope Francis to bless our

country so that corruption would be
eradicatednot just among politicians
but among all of us. There would be
no corrupt officials if we did not
tolerate them in the first place. We are
guilty of the sin of collaboration. We
are part of the vicious cycle. If
corruption were healed, it would ease
poverty. May the Pope forgive every
Filipino [including me] for allowing
corruption to flourish in our country.

Dear Pope Francis, please ask
God to forgive me for not being
able to forgive some people up
to now. They have wronged me
and have not apologized.

[Id ask forgiveness for] the
arrogance of my youth, the
recklessness of my more vulnerable days, my shameless materialism, but
even more for mistaking my career for all
of who I am (now I
know that having

much further

making a living). Most importantly, [for]
my lack of patience

I would ask the Pope forgiveness for thinking ill of other

Ronnie Lazaro
It is something so private,
that only Pope Francis and my
God would know.

Kim Atienza
Id ask forgiveness for
being selfish all these
years, thinking that life
was all about my fulfillment, my dreams and
my success. Accepting
Jesus as Lord and
Savior taught me
that I live to worship, period. As I
seek His kingdom,
all I need, plus extra
[things] are added!

Life was never about me; I am

totally powerless. His grace is
all I need. Thank You for Your

If I were not

would
probably
ask
forgiveness
for not
being more
conscientious in
attending church.

Austria nagpasaring

PAUL RYAN TAN/FACEBOOK

Crazy, magical Aces basketball

By Ted Reynoso
SMB coach Leo Austria said he
did not know what hit his team.
Alaska rookie mentor Alex
Compton himself said he cannot
explain how his team virtually
came back from the dead.
Not just once but already
twice in just the first three
games of the two teams best of
seven series for the PBA All Filipino championship that Compton and his Alaska squad have
Austria and basketball pundits
searching for answers.
I call it crazy basketball.
The way the NBA press corps
termed the brand of basketball
the 1995-96 Seattle Supersonic
then piloted head coach George
Karl dished out on the way to
and even in its gallant stint versus the magnificent Chicago
Bulls ( led by the super duo of
Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen ) in the NBA finals.
I cant help but be reminded
of that Seattle team bannered
by Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton,

Detlef Schremf, Nate McMillan

and Sam Perkins which pulled
the rugs from under traditional
power teams in the West as the
LA lakers ( Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar James Worthy ) Houston Rockets ( Hakeem Olajuwon ) and Portland
Blazers ( Clyde Drexler
Dawkins, Terry Porter ) and
gave a scare to the Jordan-led
Bulls, losing out in six games after clawing back from a 0-3
hole ( two in its own home
court, prompting the sports
headline, Sleepless in Seattle
with reference to the then very
popular Hollywood movie).
George Karl had devised
such unpredictable brand of
play after he then had concluded that his team would have no
chance against the likes of the
more talented Western teams as
the Lakers, the Blazers, the
Rockets and even the Suns (
Charles Barkley ) if they would
play them conventionally.
The play called for tight,
physical scrambling, hustling

defense anchored by McMillan

and Payton, strong inside presence and rebounding from
Kemp and Perkins and fastbreaking offense complimented
by the great outside shooting of
the Shrimp (Detlef) Schremf,
the first German and among the
first few European cagers to be
drafted in the NBA).
Karls crazy basketball carried the Sonics as far as the
NBA finals where another brilliant coach, Phil Jackson defused it with better, organized
game anchored upon the insuperable Jordan and Pippen and
executed to perfection by his
steady play-making and clutch
shooting corps of guards that
boasted of the tall Toni Kukoc
and Steve Kerr.
The similarity with the current
PBA finals series involving a gritty,
never say die Alaska against a tall,
powerful, talent-laden San Miguel
is uncanny (except of course, the
final outcome with Alaska up 2-1
as this is written).
Here we have the duo of

game plan.
I have to congratulate Alaska for a job well done, sinabi
ng malungkot na si Austria.
They (Aces) smelled blood,
there was an opportunity. On
our part, we panicked.
Pinagpistahan ng Aces ang
Beermen matapos limitahan ang
kalaban sa anim na puntos sa
fourth period. Nawalang parang

utos.
(We had a) lot of
turnovers, wika ni Austria. It
was good defense by Alaska. We
prepared hard and we know the
situation. But I am not the one
playing. All I can do is remind
them.
But it (ball) didnt get
there, sinabi ni Austria.

Sonny Thoss and Calvin Abueva

with strong support from Erik
Menk and Gabe Espinas taking
care of the boards and anchoring a pesky, unforgiving defense
with Vic Manuel and Cris Eximiniano. The likes of Dondon
Hontiveros and JV Casio provide instant outside offense.
On the other hand, San
Miguel has the more superior
line-up, at least on paper with
the man-mountain June Mar Fa-

jardo and Arwind Santos leading the charge.

Coaching thus far has been the
big difference with rookie mentor
Compton outplaying his more senior and veteran counterpart.
Will the series go the way of
the Sonics-Bulls finals in 96? Or
will Alaska provide a different
ending to this latest attempt to
overcome superior manpower
and skills with some crazy, unconventional basketball?
