Peep Show. Seasons are only 6 episodes

long. Easy to knock out a few in an

Band Of Brothers.
It's truly exceptional, it's just short enough to watch at one sitting, and it's fascinating
to see a series of young actors who have become famous since it was made (Michael
Fassbender, Marc Warren, Simon Pegg, Dominic Cooper, James McAvoy, Tom Hardy).
Edit. I've had gold and dozens of positive and informative replies to this. All of these
are appreciated. Bedtime now but I think I know what I'll be watching tomorrow.

Aaron Sorkin has absolutely mastered the phrase, "A wise

man fears the anger of a gentle man." He writes clever,
he writes funny, he writes witty, he writes calm... and
because of all this, when he writes anger you feel it. It's
almost like something you're glad you're not the brunt of.
Sadly, The Newsroom only has like 6 episodes left before
it's over.
permalink

[] ororis

Except the Newsroom can't be compared really to

The West Wing. The first season of the Newsroom
was damned interesting, but the second was just a
trainwreck. Each episode grated on me more and
more until it was too late. The only characters I like
on the show anymore are Olivia Munn's character
annnndd.... Will, sometimes.

[] ThePedanticCynic

I like Charlie a lot too. And second season

Reese grew on me. And Don is pretty cool.
I do not like what they did with Maggie at all,
and felt her whole story arc was just a waste of
time/filler. I mean, sure, someone dying on
your back is traumatic... but not that traumatic.
She must have been one delicate fucking flower
to have so completely collapsed after her
return.
Also: in season one she had panic attacks. The
fuck would you send someone who has panic
attacks for no apparent reason into a war zone,
and why didn't she panic at a time when almost
anyone else on the planet would have? She just
got over it? The fuck?
Anyway. I think overall it's still pretty funny, if
inconsistent and blown out of proportion at
times.

I'm attempting to write a book, and my words
feel lackluster on the kindest possible scale.
When your heroes are Aaron Sorkin and Joss

standard.
Anyway, thank you. Keep that shit up. If i ever

it's on I just find myself stood there watching it, there's always something going
on and it grips you from beginning to end. Only watched a few episodes all the
way through, but really enjoy it and will start from the beginning when I get a
chance

Dooooo it. Also they originally only planed POTUS to be in maybe one
scene per episode and mainly focus on the staff but Martin Sheen was so
god damn good they knew it would be dumb to play the part down.

Red Dwarf - Best Sci Fi comedy ever

permalink

source

hide child comments

[] deadbeatbert

26 points 7 hours ago

I grew up with Red Dwarf. For its few faults I recommend it to every American I
know who remotely enjoys British comedies.
In the beginning - the first two seasons - it's all about the human element and
how two men have to hate each other to function. That's sheer brilliance,
especially with the way it is written and presented. For those who enjoy
personal interaction they are the best of the 8+ seasons, but I wholly
recommend you find the original cuts and not the re-vamped ones,
The from the third to sixth series the show gets a budget and they start
exploring themes that would otherwise have been impossible. The comedy
elements start to verge away from character development and ongoing plot and
head toward an episodical feel. This is where the best individual episodes are
found, like Polymorph, Camille, Quarantine and my personal favourite,
Marooned, which harks back to the first two seasons and focuses on the

relationship between Lister and Rimmer.

There is a clear divide for season seven, which in many ways is perhaps the
best written of them all as it combines character development with the episodic
trend. Highlight episodes are Tikka to Ride and Blue.
I'm not a great fan of the eighth season or the mini series for season 9, but
there are still some genuinely funny moments and they are still worth watching.
I haven't seen the tenth season yet. Part of me doesn't want to for fear of it
showing a greater decline in the writing (where else have they left to go?), but
the vast majority of me demands it just to watch Rimmer and Lister interact.

It was so perfectly timed, a pause before that slow confident drawl. It was
in the briefest second before he made eye contact that I realized he hadn't
broken the wall yet, and when he finally spoke to the audience it was like
he was looking into your soul and daring you to judge him for the things he

things and by the end of that little speech you were back to rooting for him

I continued watching was because I like Amy Poehler so much and was
willing to give the show a chance for a couple more episodes. They
changed her character so much that the following season almost felt like a
new show.
However I will say that when I go back and re-watch season 1 now, I don't
dislike it as much anymore. But I think that might just be because I love
the show so much that I've forced myself to like it.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Edit: My first gilded comment! Thank you kind stranger! I feel bad that I didn't go into
greater detail about the series. Thing is I was in the bathroom at work when I entered
this (yes I'm on my phone while I poop!). Anyways...
Fullmetal alchemist originally was a manga. The first anime series, Fullmetal
Alchemist), deviated from the manga in terms of story and ending. I think what
happened is the anime caught up with the manga and the creator, Hiromu Arakawa,
allowed the anime team to go ahead and make their own story. On the other hand,
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood follows the manga's story and ending. I
recommended Brotherhood because it is more modern (animation wise) than the first
series.
Either way both are great, some will argue that one of them is greater than the other
but really they're both worth watching.

Fullmetal Alchemist: In my opinion is a little more darker and grittier than

Brotherhood. My only gripe is that the animation is somewhat old school and the
voice acting a bit subpar (the voice for Scar is weak).
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: I like this one and I recommend to watch it first
because the animation is a little more modern and the voice acting is better. My only
gripe with this series is the story feels rushed in the first season (but I think that's
because I watched the older version first) and there is not enough Alex Louise
Armstrong.
Thank you all for your upvotes, I made sure to upvote you all!

Haven't seen Misfits listed yet. Jouvenile delinqents get super powers! Sex, drugs,
murder, swearing in british accents, and one of the sweetest love stories I've ever
seen. 4 short seasons, with a webisode between 2 and 3, but you can stop after 3
seasons and be satisfied.

This for me was one of those shows where the more I watched it, the more I
liked it. I remember watching it the first go around and being like 'eh, it's got
some funny parts' and then now I quote the show all the time

God yes, I got sucked in right away and it just keeps getting better and better. I
actually think it's one of those shows that you have to watch from the beginning
because it's so layered, which makes it perfect for a binge!

I re-watched the episode "The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award"

and realized that it was all about the fact that the show has never been
nominated for an Emmy. They're comparing the other, more successful bar
to a bland, cheesy sitcom. It blew my mind.

Also love the Day Man song (ahh-ahh-ahhhh!).

Skins. (UK)
What's nice about this show, is that you can segment seasons in your binging. Binge
one day on seasons 1 and 2. Come back to it tomorrow for 3 and 4. Next day, 5 and
6. Then, when you're in the mood, play 7 and rekindle your love for the first 4
seasons.

I stopped after season 5. I loved the first 2 seasons with the first generation,
but I started to lose interest somewhere in season 3 as its characters [besides
Effy, Cook and JJ] were flat and lifeless and the story got a bit boring. I still
watched through season 4 as I thought Jack O'Connell was fantastic as Cook,
Kaya Scodelario was great as Effy and the actor who plays JJ was very good.
Watched season 5 and I hated every character in that season. There was no
Cook, Effy or JJ that made a mediocre story watchable, as every single
character sucked in that generation in my opinion and the story was ass.
Haven't watched season 7.

I'll say it: Buffy.

It had some of the most inventive writing on television, and the character growth and
development over the course of seven seasons was amazing. I'm actually binging it
right now.
Give it a chance. It gets amazingly, outstandingly good by season 5 (though prior
seasons are good to great, season two is pretty amazing and contains Whedon's fav
episode).
If you're skeptical, watch an episode called Hush and see what it can be like at some
of its heights.
It also has the best thing Whedon has written/directed, and one of the best episodes
on television, called The Body. But don't watch that without having seen the show, it
robs it of its power.

Personally I thought that seasons 2 and 3 were overall far superior to season 4.
Though I do agree that Hush is one of the best episodes.

I only watched the opening clip of The Body on youtube. I've watched maybe
three episodes of the first season, and that 10 minutes still haunts me. Seriously
impactful writing, acting, and directing.

And she was the perfect character to voice it, having such
an alien perspective on human emotion. Giving the words
to her didn't feel cloying or oddly placed, they felt
immediately understandable and accessible.

Interesting thing about Buffy: Joss Whedon (series creator of Buffy and creator
of the Astonishing X-Men) actually envisioned Cyclops (Scott Summers from the
Marvel universe) to mention that he has a cousin in a mental institution who
believes she is a demon hunter.
That, coupled with the 7th episode of season 6 "Normal again" makes a valid
argument that everything in the Buffy universe is actually just the delusion of a
girl in a mental institution.

Anything to back up that claim?

I have always wondered about thay Buffy episode, and I have been back
amd forth on this. The fact their is an Angel series that runs almost
completely parallel points to her not being delusional.

There is not really any proof, but there is evidence! After all, we are
talking about a fictional scenario from a fictional universe (inception
much? :P)
It's up to interpretation, all I'm saying is it's possible to interpret it
that way.
From the link I posted:
[Joss Whedon] envisioned Cyclops, a Marvel Comics mutant
character whose real name is Scott Summers, making a
reference to a female cousin of his who had been sent to a
mental institution for believing she was a demon hunter. However
he could not find an appropriate place in the storyline to fit it in
and therefore it was never featured
Another link talking about the same thing with more details:
http://www.scifinow.co.uk/news/buffy-and-x-mens-cyclops-werealmost-cousins-whedon-reveals/

Now, Whedon never actually wrote that scene, so you can say it
never happened, but another thing is the end of Never Again: The
LAST scene is Buffy being locked in the mental asylum. Why would
that be the case even after she killed the demon if that was just a
side effect of the poison?
As I said, it's up to interpretation, there is not really a good answer
;)

it really is, isn't it. i've watched 3 or 4 but it disturbed me for it's
deep subtext of, i guess, evil play. something. something really didn't

Hannibals actions.
