4.2.9.

j)

It is prohibited to scan eyes with the probe. Keep the acoustic power as low as
reasonably achievable (ALARA). Scan the body only in a period required for
making the diagnosis, rather than scan the body for a long time. An extended
scan might result in harm to personal health. Provided that clinical indications are
required, the system operator shall be fully acquainted with acoustic output or be
accessible to relevant thermal index. The probe, when exposed in the air and
noticeable heat from the probe itself, should not be applied to trans-vaginal exam.
Pay special attention to minimize exposed acoustic power and exposure period
when used on an embryo or a fetus.

k)

To ensure safety, only qualified ultrasound coupling gel compliant to relevant

standards shall be applied.

l)

During examination, in case images are interfered by an AC noise (hum-hum)

due to the patient, put a shield sheet between the body and the bed as shown in
Fig.1-1, and connect the sheet to the equipotential terminal of the main unit. The
hum-hum interference noise can be eliminated.

m) The system operator should not touch any tangible metal parts of any electronic
device in the patient environment and the patient at the same time.
n)

The system does not provide special protection functions or measures for use
with high frequency surgery equipment. The user should be cautious of such

2.1.2 Operation Principle
Basic operation principle of the main unit is as follow:
The Digital Processing Board on the one hand transmits digital image signals to the
computer control system, on the other hand receives control information from the
computer control system and generates corresponding control data to achieve control of

2-1

Composition, Principle and Specifications

the ultrasound T/R front end.

Here is the working process of the system:
Based on control actions from the control panel, the computer control system generals
control commands and parameter data automatically. The Digital Processing Board
receives commands and control parameters from the computer control system, distributes
them to each functional module.
The real-time controller on the Digital Processing Board generates live scan control
signals and controls transmission of the front-end T/R Board and Probe Interface Board.
The beam-forming module on the Digital Processing Board receives amplified echo
signals from the T/R Board and performs digital beam forming, then sends beam data to
the subsequent digital signal processing module. As a key technique, digital signal
processing plays an important role in ultrasound systems. This technology ensures image
information being transmitted and converted with high fidelity; and it will have further
processing to acquire better images, which is conducive to correct diagnosis by doctors.
Data information such as image data processed by digital signals is sent to the computer
control system for further processing and image display.
Every time when ultrasound is transmitted, the excitation high-voltage from the Probe
Interface Board generates and sends a set of excitation pulses to the current working
probe. One element group in the transducer is excited and ultrasound is transmitted.
Ultrasound is propagated in and reflected by the human tissue, and the ultrasound
returned to the probe is received by the same element group and then sent to the
preamplifier on the T/R Board for pre-amplification, depth gain compensation and
programmable gain amplification. After this process, signals are sent to the digital
processing board.
The power module, including ATX power and the power supply board for ultrasound T/R
front end, provides all kinds of power required by the system.
Based on operator button actions, relevant information is sent from the computer control
panel to the computer control system. The platform generates control commands and
parameter data automatically, and sends them to the digital processing board.
The computer control system is the managerial center of the whole system, which
receives operation command from the operation panel, and control the whole system
based on the current state of the system. The other functions that the computer control
system fulfills also include measurement and calculation, screen display and video
processing, management of patient data and images, as well as control of storage,
printing and communication.

Each probe has multiple frequencies. Users can switch to the desired one according to
diagnostic requirements. In unfrozen state, press Freq on the control panel to change
the current probe frequency. There are different frequencies for selection.

6.3 Preliminary Imaging

6.3.1 Use of Probe and Ultrasound Coupling Gel
a) Apply adequate amount of ultrasound coupling gel to the surface of the probe and
the patients body part to be examined.
Note: If there is air between the patient body and the probe, black dots will
appear on the image. In this case, apply the coupling gel once more.
b) An image will appear on the monitor as soon as the probe is placed on the
examined area.
6.3.2 Selecting Imaging Mode
The system has imaging modes including 2D (B, 2B and B/M), Color Flow Map (CFM),
Color Power Angio (CPA), Pulsed Wave Doppler (PW), Trapezoidal/ Extended Sector
Imaging, *Continuous Wave Doppler (CW), *Tissue Doppler Imaging (TDI) and * Live 3D
imaging (4D).
In unfrozen state, users can press B Mode, Dual, M Mode, CFM, CPA, PW, CW,
or TDI on the operation panel for mode selection and toggle.
* Live 3D imaging: Press 4D on the operation panel to activate live 3D imaging function.
Note:The imaging mode with the symbol * is an option.
6.3.3 MI/TI Display
MI and TI values shown on the imaging control parameter area are preset by the system
according to probe type and imaging mode. MI and TI jointly reflect the relationship
between ultrasound output parameters (e.g. frequency and acoustic power) and
bioeffects.
MI (Mechanical Index): To give relevant indication for the likelihood of ultrasound beam
mechanical bioeffects (e.g. cavitation). The higher the MI is, the bigger likelihood of
6-3

Imaging

mechanical bioeffects will be.

TI (Thermal Index): To indicate the likelihood of tissue temperature rise. It is an
estimation of temperature rise for body tissue with certain property. TI is composed of
three indexes: TIS (soft-tissue thermal index), TIB (bone thermal index) and TIC
(cranial-bone thermal index).
Adjusting acoustic power will change MI or TI display. The higher PWR is, the bigger the
MI or TI value; in CFM or PWD mode, toggling PRF to adjust PRF and also to change
MI or TI value. The higher the PRF is, the higher the MI or TI value will be.
6.3.4 Freezing and Unfreezing Images
Freezing images: In unfrozen state, press Freeze, or use the footswitch to freeze a live
image.
Unfreezing images: In frozen state, press Freeze or use the footswitch to go to live
operation again. When the freeze state is released, the system will refresh the display.
Note: The footswitch is a pedal control device connected with a cable. The
operational voltage is DC5V. Careless operation will not result in any hazard
generally. However, any liquid dripping in the footswitch is prohibited.

6.4 B-Mode Imaging

6.4.1 Entering B Mode
When the exam type is selected, the system default is to enter B mode. To re-enter B
mode from other imaging mode, press the console B Mode button. See Fig. 6-1.

Fig. 6-1 B Mode

6-4

Imaging

B mode imaging parameters are displayed on the left of the ultrasound interface. The
imaging parameters are controlled or adjusted via the buttons, knobs, toggle switches or
the trackball on the control panel. Imaging parameters for B mode screen are as shown
in Fig. 6-2.

Fig. 6-2 Parameters for B Mode Imaging

Note: FPS stands for frame per second, D for dynamic range, G for grayscale curve,
GN for gain, I for image softening, P for persistence, PWR for power, FRQ for frequency,
and D for depth.
6.4.2 Operation of B Mode Controls
B Gain

Changing gain may adjust overall brightness of B mode images.

The change of gain determines the amplification value of the

received echoes, and all the received echoes are amplified at the
same gain value despite the depth.
In live state, turn B Mode gain knob to adjust the gain of the B

mode image. Turn it clockwise to increase the gain, and the

image gets brighter; or turn it counter-clockwise to decrease the
gain, and the image gets dimmer.
Tip:
1)

Set appropriate gain. For example, to display the liver, adjust

the gain to produce an image with normal evenness and
textures, with identification of diaphragm reflector belt closely
adjacent to the liver back. The portal vein and the hepatic vein
are displayed as echo-free tract structure in the cavity. The
portal vein wall has echoes, while echoes of hepatic vein wall
are weaker than those of the portal vein.

2) Wrong gain may result in incorrect diagnosis, or inability to

diagnose. If the gain is too low, the solid tumor may seem to be
cystic, with no echo inside, but the echoes at the back enhance. If
the gain is too high, the liquid structure may be full of echoes,

6-5

Imaging

similar to solid tumor; or normal amniotic fluid may be full of small

light spot echoes, thus the displayed image is similar to turbid
amniotic fluid, which may lead to wrong diagnosis.
3) When the overall gain is low, the overall sensitivity will be low, and
the whole image display will be dark, however, which is good for
BPD measurement.
4) If the image is unclear when the gain is changed, apply more
coupling gel on the examined part or the probe.
TGC

Due to attenuation of ultrasound in human body increases with

depth, the ultrasound image shall be adjusted according to the
depth from near to far, so as to maintain uniform images from
near field to far field. When increasing the gain at a certain depth
is required, change the TGC (Time Gain Control) sliders.

In live state, slide the sliders to the left to weaken the echo
signals, or to the right to enhance the echo signals.

Tip:
1) Since the slider positions are different, they are not saved in the
user application.
2) When adjusting TGC sliders, the TGC curve is displayed on the
right of the ultrasound image area. If the TGC sliders are not
moved within 3 seconds, the TGC curve disappears automatically.
Suggestion: Adjust the values of TGC sliders like this: weak in
near field while strong in far field.
Depth

In live state, toggle Depth switch to change the image depth. Toggle
it down to increase depth, and the image display size gets smaller for
viewing the whole depth range; toggle it up to decrease depth, and the
image display size gets bigger. The scan line number and the frame
rate are optimized automatically.
Tip 1: The maximum and minimum values of depth are probe
dependant. The actual depth is displayed in cm, at the top left of the
parameter area.
Tip 2: In frozen state, the displayed B mode image is repositioned
on the monitor, without any change in depth range.

Focus

The selected focus area determines the depth range for

6-6

Imaging

Position

optimization and sharpening of ultrasound beams. The focus

position is indicated by blue triangle(s) on the right of the
ultrasound image.
In live state, toggle Focus switch to change focus position.

Toggle it up to shift the focus position to a shallower depth; OR

toggle it down to shift the focus position to a deeper depth.

6.4.8 Optimization
In unfrozen state, press Auto, and you may achieve one touch optimization.
6.4.9 Tissue Harmonic Imaging (THI)
What THI function utilizes is harmonic frequency generated by tissues. The fundamental
transmit frequency may generate harmonic frequency echoes. The harmonic frequency
received from the tissue is the frequency doubling of the fundamental transmit frequency.
The harmonic frequency received in the ultrasound imaging system does not have the
fundamental frequency or any accompanying artifact. Decreased artifact as well as
accompanying brightness and noise improves contrast resolution and boundary profile.
The THI function is helpful for imaging difficult patients.
In B-mode/ Color/ Doppler live state, press THI button to enter tissue harmonic imaging.
THI is displayed at the lower left of the screen, which means the system is in Tissue
Harmonic Imaging mode. The parameter adjustment for normal B mode imaging applies
to THI mode as well.
When the system is in THI mode, press THI button to exit the mode, and the symbol THI
at the lower left of the screen disappears.
Tip 1: Compared with normal B-mode images, harmonic images have higher
resolution, but decreased scanning depth. The user may select the proper
operating mode as required.
Tip 2: Tissue Harmonic Imaging is not applicable to all probes.

6.6.2 Operation of CFM Mode Controls
CFM (Color Gain)

In live state, turn CFM knob to adjust color gain of the image.
Turn the knob clockwise to increase the flow signal level within
the color ROI box, or counterclockwise to decrease it.
Tip: Increasing color gain will enhance color flow sensitivity.
Too low color gain may lead to insufficient filling of flow signals
and dim image color; And excessively high color gain may lead to
obvious color outflow.

Steer

In live state, with the linear probe as the currently activated probe,
toggle Steer to adjust the steer angle of color box. Toggle it up to
steer left, or toggle it down to steer right.

6-22

Imaging

Wall Filter

In live state, toggle WF switch to change wall filter. Toggle it up to

(WF)

increase wall filter, or toggle it down to decrease.

It is used for removing color artifact due to vascular wall pulse or
valve activity. If WF in the main menu is selected, you may also
turn the knob SP2 to adjust wall filter.
Tip: This adjustment is relative to color sensitivity.
To detect high-velocity flow or turbulent flow, increase the WF
value to eliminate frequency shift artifact due to low velocity flow
signals and low wall activity.
To detect low-velocity flow, decrease the WF value to avoid flow
signals with low frequency being cut off.

PRF
(Pulse

In live state, toggle PRF up to increase PRF or down to decrease

Repetition

Frequency)

it.
This adjustment will increase/ decrease the detection range of flow
velocity.
Tip: Higher PRF will lead to higher detectable flow velocity,
lower color filling and higher frame rate; on the contrary, lower
PRF will result in lower detectable flow velocity, higher color filling
and lower frame rate. It is better to adjust this value without
leading to color inversion. When detecting low-velocity flow,
decrease the PRF value, so as to increase sensitivity of color flow
signal. Low PRF easily results in color alias and mosaic images.

Baseline

In live state, toggle Baseline switch up or down to move the

color map baseline position. Press Inv to invert the color map
upside down against the baseline.

Chapter 10
Maintenance, Inspection,
Transportation and Storage
10.1 System Maintenance
Every time before operating the system, the user should inspect the probe cable
connecter, the probe cable, the potential equalization conductor and the power cable
carefully to check whether there is any separated sheath, shedding or other signs of
damages. Verify if the potential equalization conductor is correctly and safely grounded.
Special attention should be paid to these daily inspections to avoid unexpected danger
and to use the system safely.
Upon each system power-up, check whether the power indicator and the fun are in normal
operation. The buttons and knobs might be fully inspected once every half a year. For
detailed information, please refer to Section 4.2 System Inspection and Maintenance.

10.2 Troubleshooting
The following table lists some common failures, possible causes and solutions (see Table

RENDER

In color copy mode, the color information of color or power Doppler

MODE

signals can be used for 4D display.

Move the cursor over RENDER MODE, press Set to select it, turn Menu
knob or press to select Vol, Max IP or X-ray.
Vol The image closer to the ROI volume box is brighter, while the image
farther from the ROI is dimmer.
Max IP The maximum color value of the CROP ROI is displayed.
X-ray All the color values of the CROP ROI are calculated and
averaged (with the same effect as the X-ray image).

AUTO

Move the cursor over AUTO ROTATE, press Set to select it, turn Menu

ROTATE

knob or press to select the angle for 3D image auto rotation, with
45, 90, 180, 270 and 360 available. Then the 3D image will be

automatically rotated according to the selected angle.

TRACE CUT

With this function, you may trace manually to remove the image
region not desired to display, so as to make the interested object
clearer for display.

Move the cursor over TRACE CUT, press Set to select it, turn

Menu knob or press to set it OFF, IN or OUT.

OFF: select it to close this function.

IN: select it, and move the cursor to the 3D image. Press Set to fix
the first point. Move the trackball to trace along the region to be cut,

method (linear or sector), so as to calculate the volume information.

Move the cursor over SCAN METHOD, press Set to select it, turn

Menu knob or press to select Lin (linear) or Sec (sector).

Z SCALE

The moving speed of the probe might be somewhat different, which

can be corrected by Z scale. The moving speed of the probe is in
inverse proportion of Z scale. The increase of Z scale compensates
slow-speed scanning, while the decrease of Z scale compensates
fast-speed scanning.

Move the cursor over Z SCALE, press Set to select it, turn Menu
knob or press to increase or decrease Z scale.

Z ANGLE

When SCAN METHOD is set Sec, move the cursor over Z ANGLE, press

Set to select it, turn Menu knob or press to change Z ANGLE.
