Push processing

Problem:

-not enough light when shooting indoors

-shutter speeds too slow to freeze action
-lack of contrast at certain times of day
-only shoot during the day with 400 iso
-3200 iso is very grainy
-having to buy specific iso films ahead of time

solution:
-shoot digital to be able to change iso
-flash
-push film to a different iso

Push Processing
1. Intentionally setting your cameras ISO to something
higher than the films. This underexposes the film but
allows for faster shutter speeds in low light

!

COMBINED WITH

!

2. Processing longer in developer to increase contrast

and values. This overprocessing corrects for the
underexposure during shooting.

Artist Statement Reflection

DIRECTIONS: Using complete sentences, compose an Artist Statement of at least one paragraph that addresses the
following components:!
Reflect on the process of shooting at a different ISO than the films box speed, how you had to change your
way of working, and how this process will inform your work in the future for AP work, your Humble Epic, and
other photographing. !
Discuss your objective for this roll, how you found inspiration, and how you executed successful photographs
that reflect your knowledge as a Photo 3 student. !
How did you approach photographing? What did you have to consider for the roll?!
Why did you choose the photographs you did to turn in (be specific, not just a generally about all of them)?!
Explain the process of planning, scouting, directing, shooting, and editing.!
Were you inspired, in any aspect of your work, by any of the examples or demonstrations you saw in class?
What about anything outside of class?

Ideas:

Portraiture: gives you higher contrast to emphasize different aspects of a person,
contrast typical portraiture, make them edgier

!

Street photography: shooting at a higher ISO allows you to have greater depth of
field, to get more of the street in focus and freeze action

!

Low light shooting: gives you faster shutter speeds inside or at night

!

Abstraction: photographing architecture, car headlights on the road, textures,

forms and shapes will all be more contrasty and more abstract

Juxtaposition: photographing children, apple picking, flowers, the ocean with higher
contrast results will showcase them in a unique way, contrary to how these
subjects are usually photographed

Mood: higher grain, contrast, and emphasized textures will create a specific feeling
or mood different from slower film without being as harsh at normal 3200 ISO
film

Tips:

!

Make sure to change your cameras ISO to the new pushed ISO (if it

sets it automatically, you must override it manually, ask Google if unsure)

!

You do not have to photograph at night, you can also push film in order
to get more contrast during the day. It can also be a way to get faster
shutter speeds, or greater depth of field.

Once you set the new ISO, read your light meter normally

!

Consider subjects that will take advantage of or be a good juxtaposition

with higher contrast
