JUNCTION DIODE AS HALF WAVE RECTIFIER
Whenasinglediodeisusedasarectifier,therectificationof
onlyonehalfoftheA.C.waveformtakesplace.Sucharectification
iscalledhalfwaverectification.Thecircuitdiagramforahalfwave
rectifierisshowninFig.
Principle:
Itisbasedupontheprinciplethatjunctiondiodeofferslow
resistance path when forward biased, and high resistance when
reversebiased.
Arrangement:
TheA.C.supplyisappliedacrosstheprimarycoil(P)ofa
stepdowntransformer.Thesecondarycoil(S)ofthetransformeris
connectedtothejunctiondiodeandaloadresistanceRL.Theout
putD.C.voltageisobtainedacrosstheloadresistance(RL)
Theory:
Suppose that during the first half of the input cycle, the
junction diode gets forward biased the conventional current will
flowinthedirectionofthearrowheads.TheupperendofRLwill
beatpositivepotentialw.r.t.thelowerend. Duringthenegative
halfcycleoftheinputa.c.voltage,thediodeisreversebiased. No
currentflowsinthecircuit,andtherefore,novoltageisdeveloped
across(RL).Sinceonlythepositivehalfcycleoftheinputappears
across the load, the a.c. input is converted into pulsating direct
current(d.c.).
DisadvantageofHalfWaveRectifier:
1. Halfwaverectificationinvolvesalotofwastageof
energyandhenceitisnotpreferred.
2. A small current flows during reverse bias due to
minoritychargecarriers.Astheoutputacross(RL)isnegligible.
3. The resulting d.c. voltage is not steady enough for
somepurpose.Thefollowingdeviceisusedwhenaverysteadyd.c.
voltageisrequired.
