Estudos observacionais recentes (Trenberth~ 1981) confirmam que o estado medio da atmosferA no He~isferio Sul
(H. S.)
difere consideravelmente daquele do Hemisferio Norte (H.N.). Um
dos aspectos que tem interessantes implicaes e a temperatura
media zonal. Flohn (1980) notou que a diferena meridional

ABSTRACT
Recent observational studies have demonstrated strong con, trasts between the mean physical states of the Southern HemiSphere (S.H.) and the Northern Hemisphere (N.H.).Baroclinic instability depe~ds critecally on this state and, therefore, some
important differences in the deveiopment of transient
disturbances and the processes associated with it, are expected. The
following two aspects are examined in the four seasons of S.H.:
1) Baroclinic instability of the observed zonal wind and 2) Ba'rpclinic adjustment.
The obs e r ve d me r i d i ona 1 tem pe r a tu r e

middle and high latitudes of S.H. far exceed the crltlcal gra'
dients necessarv for the manifestation of baroclinic instability in a two~layer quasi-geostrophic model. This results is
in
contrast to the "baroclinic adjustment" obtained in the N.H. bY
St0ne (1978). However, the analysis of baroclinic instability
of the, mean zona 1 wi nds oi n S. H. reproduced
va ri ous aspects of
observed cyclogenesis.
