TEAM PREVIEWS

By Jim Naveau

The hope is always that a

sequel will be as good as the
original.
Hollywood loves sequels.
It loves them to the point it
sometimes doesnt know when
to stop creating more sequels
to a beloved film.
Some people turn their
annual vacations into sequels
by returning to the same place
year after year after year.
And sports, too, has its own
plentiful supply of sequels.
Teams create sequels. Players create them, too. And so
do coaches.
If a player or coach wins one
title, they want two. Or three
or four. If a team wins it all or
even just does well, fans want
to know if it is going to be able
to do it again the next season.
It happens every year. It
happens nationally. It happens statewide and it happens
around here.
This year, especially, sequels
are prominent stories in high
school football in this area.
The incredible success story
that is the Midwest Athletic
Conference has two of them,
with Marion Local chasing its
fourth consecutive state football championship in Division
VII and Coldwater trying for a
three-peat in Division V.
Crestview got a taste of success on a large scale by winning its first football playoff
game in 2013. With most of
the key players back from that
team, it is expecting to enjoy
creating a sequel to that season.
It only took five wins last
season for Lima Seniors football team, coaches and fans to
eagerly anticipate this season
and start thinking about what
comes next.
Those five wins were the
most by a Lima Senior football
team since 2000 and matched
the number of wins the Spartans had in 2012, 2011, 2010
and 2009 combined.
So, add a group of talented
players to five wins and a fan
base starved for excitement
and you have a recipe for
people including everyone on
the team wanting more.
What a difference a year
makes. Lima Senior running
back Juniel Liles says his goal
this year is a state championship to follow up last years
break-through season.
A year ago when Mike Fell
was hired as the Spartans
coach Liles wasnt sure what
was coming.
I didnt know what to
expect. I knew he was a good
coach and won a lot of games
but I didnt know how that was
going to translate to us, Liles
said.
There are a lot more people
outside the program telling
players how they expect great
things now, too. Liles has an
answer for that, too.
Theres been a lot of those,
but we just try to stay focused

2012 and being LCCs defensive coordinator last fall, hes

back as a head coach.
And in a considerably more
shocking way at St. Marys,
Doug Frye is creating his own
sequel by returning to the
program he led for 11 seasons
before leaving to coach at its
bitter rival Wapakoneta for the
last four seasons.
Palte said his desire to
return to being a head coach
was something that developed
gradually, not overnight.
When I stopped, football
wasnt really on my mind. I
thought Id sit back and see
what happened, he said. The
following year, 2012, I still was
interested but I didnt really
want to commit the time to
coaching so I kind of sparingly
helped out Mike (Fell) at Ada.
After that, I was like, You
know, Id like to get back into
it.
He got back into it by taking
the defensive coordinators job
at LCC last season with the
stipulation that he would be
the coach in waiting whenever Jerry Cooper decided to
retire.
Palte thought he might be
waiting several years. I saw
that as being a four or five
years down the road thing, he
said.
But when Cooper announced
earlier this year he was leaving
after nine seasons at LCC, eight
of them playoff seasons, the
wait was not very long at all.
I never saw it happening after one year. I did not
see that coming. I thought it
would be at least four years
because his son was going to
be a freshman. I figured if I
was going to be a head coach
it would be in a couple years
and I would go somewhere
else. I didnt know if Id be
here long enough to wait him
out, Palte said.
Fryes Wapakoneta teams
were 33-10 in four seasons,
including 9-2 last season, and
went to the playoffs twice.
He coached 11 seasons at
St. Marys and had an 89-35
record, including a Division III
state runner-up team in 2004.

Richard Parrish | The Lima News

He resigned after the

2008 season and sat out a
year before signing on with
Wapakoneta. In the five years
since he left St. Marys, the
Roughriders have gone 5-5,
1-9, 4-6, 0-10 and 0-10. They
currently have lost 21 games
in a row.
He calls his decision to
return to the town where he
maintained his residence even
while he coached at Wapakoneta one based solely on the
heart.
If I wanted to just worry
about wins and losses, we had
almost everybody coming back
at Wapakoneta. The next four
years there look very good,
he said.
He says he has been well
received in St. Marys in round
two and hasnt been subjected
to excessive criticism in Wapakoneta for leaving.
Actually, the people have
been fantastic. Im sure it has
spiced up the rivalry a little
bit, though, he said. I joke
that I probably should have
taken a salary negotiated on
the gate of the St. MarysWapakoneta game.
There was no other job
I would have taken. This is
the way I wanted to finish,
he said. I wrestled with it
for a long time. It was a very
difficult decision and there
was only one No vote and
that was my wife. She was
the toughest one to convince.
Weve been happily married
for 34 years and when I went
to Wapakoneta, I told her that
was the last challenge I was
going to take on, he said.
In some ways this is actually probably a little bit simpler this time around because
the first time I was the first
outside guy, I believe, who
had come through the door in
39 years. Skip Baughman was
there 36 and then Bob Priddy,
the longtime defensive coordinator took over. So anything
I did different, even though
I had been a head coach for
years at a number of places,
was radically different. Right
now, anything is good that we
do.

2014 guide to area football

By Tom Usher

tusher@civitasmedia.com

10. Which team will change its

offensive approach this year?
Delphos St. Johns graduated
tailback Tyler Jettinghoff and
fullback Luke MacLennan, along
with several offensive linemen.
Coach Todd Schulte will go away
from the power-I and power
sweep and go with a one-back,
option approach. It will be hard
to imagine the Blue Jays without
their favorite power sweep, but
look for more passing and more
runs out of the option.

9. What can coach Doug Frye do

at St. Marys?
Win, hes already proven that.
He won at Wapakoneta and he was
a winner at St. Marys in his first
time there.
But this time, dont expect
miracles. This St. Marys team has
lost 21 in a row.
But Frye will peak interest in
the program, drive the numbers
on the roster up and will get his
team prepared for every game. His
teams will execute, hit hard and he
will win. Just dont expect him to
wave a magic wand this season.

8. Which teams are poised for a

turnaround season?
Bath has a good opportunity
to improve on its 4-6 mark of a
year ago. It returns 16 starters,
including its quarterback and
running back. It needs to improve
its defense and will be young at
wide receiver.
Shawnee should also show
improvement. It has 10 starters
back from a 2-8 team. The key is
the return to health of 210-pound
running back Angelo Fox, who
missed the second half of last year.
And dont count out a bounceback year from Elida, which
slipped to 5-5. The passing game
should be high octane, but the key
will be on defense.

7. Is there a quarterback you

would drive miles to see?
Coldwaters Brody Hoying put
on a great show in the Division
V state championship game, in
which Coldwater bounced Bishop
Hartley, 24-7. Hoying ran for 145
yards and three TD and also threw
for 83 yards. He can do a little bit
of everything, run, throw, lead and
does it all every night. Hes headed
to Eastern Michigan.

6. Who will be some of the top

running backs in the area to
watch?
Start with Lima Seniors Juniel
Liles, he was first team all-Three
Rivers Athletic Conference
The Lima News Dream Teams

offensive player of the year.

Marion Local returns 5-10 Jacy
Goettemoeller, who battled injuries
last year and still ran for 852 yards
and 22 TDs. If he can stay healthy,
he can be one of the best backs in
the region. Crestview will feature
200-pound Malcolm Oliver on a
squad bringing back 18 starters
from a second-round playoff team.
Leipsics Jordan Chamberlin will
be one of the top backs in the
Blanchard Valley Conference.

5. What happens to Air Kenton

now that Mike Mauk is coaching
high school in Missouri?

Coach Mike Fells high-powered

offense should continue to roll. But
the Spartans must improve on a
defense which gave up 45 points
per game.

1. Which teams have the best

chance to at reaching the
state championship game in
Columbus?
You have probably heard this
one before, but Marion Local and
Coldwater should once again be
the teams to beat in the Midwest

Athletic Conference. And, as we

know, once they battle it out for
the top spot in the MAC, its time
to book their tickets for at least
the state semifinals.
Marion Local graduated
its quarterback, but returns
Goettemoeller at tailback. Dont
rule out the three-time defending
state champion.
Quarterback Brody Hoying
is back to lead the defending
champion Cavaliers. He
dominated the state title game last
year.

Kenton will continue to throw

under its new coach Brent
Fackler. The names will change
at quarterback and wide receiver,
but the offense will remain high
powered. Taking over for Grant
Sherman will be sophomore
Trent Hites, who led the team
in the summer seven-on-seven
tournaments/camps. Among his
veteran wide receivers will be
Kollin Stollar, Colyn Backford,
Luke Jackson and Conner Jones.

4. What is the big rule change

this season?
Its the new mercy rule, which
kicks in this season. Any time a
team is ahead by 30 or more points
in the second half, the game will
go to a running clock. The game
will only be stopped for an officials
timeout or injury, change of
possession, a charged timeout, at
end of a period or on a score,

Elida fans show their team spirit.

Amanda Wilson | The Lima News

3. How will Lima Central

Catholic do under its new coach
Scott Palte?
LCC graduated a number of
key cogs from last year, including
Mykale Rogers, Kalito Lasenby,
Darius West and quarterback Colin
Stolly.
But instead of the ground-it-out
approach of former coach Jerry
Cooper, coach Scott Palte will put
the ball in the air. His quarterback
will be Ethan OConnor and he has
a host of fast receivers like Dimitri
Floyd, Cam White and Nick
Taflinger. Palte, the former head
coach at Columbus Grove, will
keep the T-Birds heading toward
their goal, the playoffs.

Richard Parrish | The Lima News

Lima Central Catholics Dimitri Floyd and his teamates take the field before the start of the game
last year at Stadium Park.

2. Where does Lima Senior go

after its 5-5 turnaround season
last year, the Spartans first
.500 season since 2000?
On the plus side, the Spartans
have The Lima News Dream
Team Offensive Player of the Year
returning in running back Juniel
Liles. Also back is Dream Team
wide receiver 6-4 junior Ruben
Flowers. The key is replacing
graduated quarterback Justice
Graham.

Defense

Spartan toughness

LIMA Lima Senior

hit the fast forward button
last football season.
A year ago, the expectations were that the hiring
of Mike Fell as head coach
signaled a change of
direction and that eventually the Spartans football
program would become
competitive again.
Eventually got here
much sooner, though,
when Lima Senior won
five games in 2013.
Now, with many of the
players who played key
roles in that turnaround
back for another season,
the expectation or at
least the hope is that
Lima Senior will take
another big step forward
this fall.

TRAC FORECAST
1. TOLEDO CENTRAL CATHOLIC. Quarterback DeShone Kizer has moved on to
Notre Dame, but Central Catholic has five
first-team All-TRAC players returning.
2. TOLEDO WHITMER. The Panthers have
been in the playoffs seven of the last eight
years and tied Central Catholic for first in
the TRAC coaches preseason poll.
3. TOLEDO ST. FRANCIS. Tailback Lamar
Carswell is coming off a season when he
rushed for 1,248 yards, including a monster 405-yard game against Lima Senior.
The Knights will ride him as far as he can
take them.
4. LIMA SENIOR. The Spartans strength
is an impressive group of fast receivers
and running backs. If they find a quarterback and tighten up the defense, they
could improve on last years 5-5 record.
5. FREMONT ROSS. Former Cincinnati
Bengals receiver Craig Yeast will take over
as head coach after Ross went 5-5 in Derek
Kidwells final season last fall.
6. TOLEDO ST. JOHN. The top college
prospect for the Titans is center Sean Rattay. They need to find some players at the
skill positions.
7. FINDLAY. The Trojans dropped to 2-8
after going 8-2 in 2012. A solid core of
offensive players, led by quarterback Brandon Muehl, running back Emanual Mogalu
and receiver Grant Niswander could make
them better this year.
8. OREGON CLAY. Last year, one coach
didnt vote Lima Senior last in the TRAC
preseason poll and gave his vote to Clay.
This year the Eagles were a unanimous
last place selection.

LCC has new coach, new offense

By Jim Naveau

LIMA One of the most

famous moments of Scott
Paltes high school playing career involved some
trickery.
Palte, a multi-year
starter at quarterback for
Columbus Grove walked
toward the sideline, looking like he didnt understand the play call. While
some of the defenders
turned their attention to
the commotion, the ball
was snapped to a running
back, who then fired a
pass to Palte, who had
taken off running down
the field.
Whether Lima Central
Catholic will attempt
anything that unorthodox
in his first season as the
Thunderbirds head coach
remains to be seen. But
the game plan definitely
will include throwing the
ball more than LCC has in
recent years.
The Thunderbirds, 8-3
last season, will run a

spread offense this year.

I think it matches the
personnel we have the
speed we have and the athletes we have and trying
to get them in space and
spread across the entire
field, Palte said.
I like our speed. I like
our skill guys and their
athletic ability. I think we
have some real playmakers on our team. We have
some real quick, athletic
guys and I think our linemen are coming along.
There are some good solid
kids up there, too, he
said.
Junior quarterback
Ethan OConnor will be
putting the ball in the air
30 to 40 times a game.
OConnor, younger
brother of Michigan State
backup quarterback Tyler
OConnor, played tight
end and defensive end last
season.
Hes a big kid with a
strong arm and clearly
has some pretty decent
bloodlines. We dont feel
like were a power run-

ning team, so were going

to fling it around, Palte
said.
Nick Taflinger, Dimitri
Floyd, Cam White and
Aidan OConnor are
expected to be the top
receivers in a pass-heavy
offense.
Theyre quick guys
who can get in space. This
type of offense is made
for them. Those guys all
make plays. Tyler Heaphy
is another guy who played
some last year who can
catch the ball, Palte said.
On the offensive line,
Ryan Rhodes and Jack
Huffman started all season
last year and Brad Stolly
would have been a returning starter if he hadnt
suffered a season-ending
injury in the second game
of the year.
Five or six players will
play both offense and
defense, including most
of the offensive line. And
the receivers will fill most
of the defensive backfield
positions.
Jamison Bradley and

Trey Callahan could also

play on the defensive line.
If you can get a guy a
series off every now and
then its a real benefit. I
think well be able to do
that, Palte said.
Malik Laws, who he
called our best defensive
lineman last year, will
move to middle linebacker
from the defensive line.
Palte, who was Lima
Central Catholics defensive coordinator last year,
replaces Jerry Cooper,
who left LCC after nine
highly successful seasons
to take a coaching position in Seymour, Tenn.,
around 15 miles southeast
of Knoxville.
Eight of Coopers
last nine teams at LCC
reached the playoffs. Palte
was Columbus Groves
head coach from 20052011. His teams there
had a 45-28 record in
seven seasons. He also
spent eight years there
as an assistant coach and
became head coach when
Cooper took the LCC job.

Moyer brings plenty of success to Wapakoneta

By Ross Bishoff

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

WAPAKONETA When
Travis Moyer became the
head coach at Wynford
High School in Bucyrus in
1999, he was all of 22 years
old with little coaching
experience.
In the 13 years that followed, he went 118-28
with nine North Central
Conference titles, eight
playoff berths and six
undefeated regular seasons.
When he left, Wynford had
a 58-game regular season
unbeaten streak.
Two years after stepping
aside as the coach for the
Royals, Moyer steps into
a Wapakoneta program
which has become accustomed to success after former coach Doug Frye went
back to St. Marys.
In Fryes four years with
the Redskins, he led the
team to two of the programs six playoff appearances and had the most
wins in a four-year stretch
of any Wapak coach ever.
A year ago, Wapakoneta
went 9-2 overall (8-1 Western Buckeye League) and
were the third seed for the
playoffs in Division III,
Region 10. It lost its playoff
game, 41-34, in an overtime
thriller against Springfield
Shawnee.
This year, Wapakoneta enters the season with
many of those same players back and a rejuvenated
coach.
I love coaching, Moyer
said. Its an opportunity

a very athletic and fast secondary.

On offense, though the
team lost a highly successful group, it returns three
starters to the line in Blake
Pfenning (Sr., 6-4, 290),
Wil Rankin (Sr., 5-11, 260),
Ethan Saunders (Sr., OL).
Meanwhile, three key skillposition players include
quarterback Morgan (threeyear letterman), Keaton
Metz (Sr., 771 rushing
yards, 10 TDs/492 catches,
8 TDs last year) and Jared
Smith (Sr., TE).

and 0-10.
And while Frye admits its a huge
challenge to get the ship righted,
the situation is far from hopeless.
Obviously this is a big challenge, Frye said. But there has
been a lot of success here in the
past. So you do have a community
filled with people who do know
what it takes to be successful. I tell
the kids, here is what were going
to do and as we do them, well get
the program back where it should
be.
St. Marys does have a few
positives working in its favor since
Fryes return: pulling in a fantastic coaching staff; and a massive
improvement in the number of athletes going out for football.
Last year, the varsity roster had
40 players and this year the team is
at 71 not including freshmen. The
eighth-grade team last year had 14
players but this year, the freshman
team is up to 37, giving St. Marys
108 total kids playing high school
football.
The No. 1 thing we wanted to do
was get kids interested in football
again, Frye said. And obviously
the numbers speak for themselves.
Honestly, it has nothing to do
with me, I attribute that to our
coaches. We had an advantage here
because I had been here before so
the kids knew from their relatives
and the community what to expect.
But the fact we can get those types

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

ST. MARYS The last football

game Doug Frye coached was a
thrilling home playoff game at
Wapakoneta which ended in a 41-34
overtime loss to Springfield Shawnee.
It capped a remarkable 9-2 season
and the Redskins were looking at
returning a slew of top players who
primed for years of success ahead.
On Friday, Frye is trying to break
a 21-game losing streak for St.
Marys when the Roughriders plays
host to Sidney.
At Wapak, we thought our best
teams were ahead of us, said Frye,
who returned to St. Marys after
four years at Wapakoneta, where
he posted the best four-year record
(33-10) in the programs history
and reached the playoffs twice. I
look in the mirror some times and
ask, Whyd you do this? I honestly
would not have done this if it were
anywhere else, I would not have left
that situation.
But the luster of returning to St.
Marys was just too much.
After all, from 1998-2008, Frye
went 89-35 as the Roughriders
head coach, reaching the playoffs
seven times and claiming state
runner-up in 2004.
But its a vastly different situation
now. St. Marys records in the past
four years were 5-5, 1-9, 4-6, 0-10

of numbers is not typical with the

lack of success weve had. But it
shows they want to be successful
and theyre working hard.
Still, it has been a major teaching
job for Frye and his staff because
many of the players either havent
played much lately, or in some
cases, none at all.
Everything from warmups to
entering the field to practice is
being taught and re-taught.
And the top lesson is teaching his
players every day is a new one and
theres work to be done.
We have an old lunch box right
by our door, and every day our
kids have a wristband they take off
and lock in the lunchbox as we go
to practice because were going to
work that day, Frye said. They
have to understand the habits you
need to be successful and thats
what were really trying to do is
change habits.

Bulldogs look to build around their veterans

Elidas Clark Etzler gets to the outside during a game against Defiance last season at Elida.

Amanda Wilson |The Lima News

By Mark Altstaetter

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

ELIDA Its often said

that it all starts in the
trenches for a football
team.
Elida coach Jason
Carpenter is hoping that
holds true for this years
squad.
The Bulldogs return,
not only most of its offensive line, but most of its
skill players from a 5-5
team (4-5 Western Buckeye League) a year ago.
We have most of our
offensive line back, which
is crucial because we cant
run our offense without
good communication on
the line, Carpenter said.
With Tristan Edwards
(5-feet-11, 210 pounds,
Jr.), Quinn Searcy (5-11,
240, Sr.) , Jared Blymyer
(5-7, 200, Sr.) and Dylan
Holcomb (5-8, 175, Jr.)
back, they all had varsity time last year. Thats
going to prove to be the
key for our offensive
unit.
Behind that offensive
line is junior quarterback
Logan Alexander (6-0,
195). Last season, Alexander passed for 1,450 yards
and eight touchdowns, but
was picked off 12 times.
He also rushed for 667
yards and nine TDs.
Clark Etzler (6-0, 175,
Sr.), Alexanders favorite
receiver in 2013, returns.
Last season, Etzler hauled
in 45 balls for 532 yards
and three TDs.
Christian Moran (6-3,
190, Sr.) also returns
at a wide receiver. Last
season, Moran missed
four games due to an
injury. However, Moran
still ended the campaign
with 25 receptions for 466
yards and four TDs.
We lost a big part of
our offense when he got
hurt, which might have

ELIDA SCHEDULE

Elidas Logan Alexander carries the ball during a game against Bath last season.

We always try to be
balanced, 50-50, run-topass, Carpenter said. I
think thats what sets us
apart, when you look at
the spreads in the league.
We want to be more balanced.
In the backfield, the
Bulldogs will rely mostly
on one athlete.
Dez (Desmend White)
is going to get some carries at running back,
Carpenter said. When
Seanquez (Frye) got hurt
last year, he stepped up
and got some carries. So,
hes probably going to get
the bulk of the carries this
year for us.
White (5-8, 180, Sr.) is
ready for the challenge.
He will also play middle
linebacker. Last season,
White was third on the
team in tackles with 63. In
his limited action at running back in 2013, White
ran the ball 15 times for
68 yards.
I got a lot better conditioning this year, White
said. Coach has pushed
us hard. So, Ill be ready.
Im going to block a lot

cost us a couple wins

toward the end of the
year, said Carpenter. So,
hes back and healthy.
Clark (Etzler) is back.
And Brian Upshaw (6-0,
150, Jr.) is back at wide
receiver. So, we have
three wide receivers back
from last years team.
Throwing the ball is all
about timing. So, if we get
the timing down on our
routes and Logan throws
good balls, were going to
be pretty dangerous with
the pass.
Etzler is feeling confident about his teams
chances in 2014.
Its your senior year,
you have to go all out,
Etzler said. I think we
lost two (on offense) from
last year. So, we have
most everybody returning. We know we have
the players. We have the
speed. Our line is doing
well. As long as we make
the right reads, I think
well be fine.
Elida will stick with the
spread offense. However,
Carpenter wants to avoid
being one-dimensional.

Amanda Wilson |The Lima News

too. So, Ill do a little bit

of everything.
Defensively, the Bulldogs will feature a 4-4
set. Last season, Elidas
opponents rushed for
114 yards per game and
passed for 175. One of
the main areas of focus
for the Bulldogs will be in
the turnover department,
where they were at minus4.
Carpenter, who is in his
eighth season at the helm,
is cautiously optimistic
about this season.
I think this year its
pretty much up for grabs,
Carpenter said. Your top
tier teams in the WBL
are always going to compete for a title. Kenton is
going to be good. What
they lost was quality, but
they still have a lot coming back. O-G its their
second year in the spread
(offense) so, its going
to be a lot better. Its
going to be interesting
over at Wapak. They have
a lot coming back and
a new coach. Hopefully,
were going to be up there
in the discussion as well.

Bath brings experience

to Garlands second year
By Tom Usher
tusher@civitasmedia.com

BATH TOWNSHIP Bill Garland pulled a roster off the printer

and placed it in the center of his
desk. The sheet was dotted with
a number of asterisks, indicating
veteran players.
This years Wildcats team will
be loaded with experience. In
all, they return seven starters
on offense and nine starters on
defense from a team that went 4-6
(4-5 Western Buckeye League) a
year ago.
This is Year 2 for Garland as
head coach at Bath, after serving as a Wildcats assistant for 28
years.
We had a whole year as a coaching staff to prepare for this year,
compared to last year when we
started camp five weeks after I got
the job, Garland said. Now Im
able to put some of my touches on
the program. We have a lot of
experience back.
Bath returns senior Cam Jenkins
(5-11, 195) at quarterback. Last
year he completed 144 of 276 passes for 1,710 yards. He threw 17
TDs. He was second on the team
in rushing with 275 yards and one
touchdown.
Jenkins, a catcher in baseball,
gives the Wildcats a gritty leader.
Cam started all 10 games at
quarterback last year, Garland
said. Hes a guy who can run
inside the tackles. Hes a coachs

son and brings a little bit of the

football smarts to the game. He
knows our offense and our passing
game really well. We expect a lot
out of him this year.
Bath returns four on the offensive line, including tight end
Garrett Metcalf. The other three
are tackles Blake McGue, Easton
Rudasill and center Kody Toland.
Blakes a three-year starter and
will anchor our offensive line,
Garland said. Cody makes our line
calls up front. Garrett has good
hands and hes a guy we want to
try to throw the ball to this year.
Running back Chase Clark led
the team in rushing (87 carries,
299 yards, 3 TDs) last year in the
pass-oriented attack. The running game will be a mix of Clark,
Dylan Burkholder, Kyle Lhamon,
Bo Gross and sophomore Kadean
Sullivan.
Gone are the teams top three
wide receivers from last year: Colin
Gossard (41 receptions, 611 yards,
8 TDs), Hayden Atkins (45 receptions, 459 yards, 4 TDs) and Eric
Heffner (29 receptions, 436 yards,
4 TDs). All three also were regulars in the secondary.
The lone veteran receiver is
Corey Briggs (17 receptions, 121
yards).
The new group of wide receivers will include Lauf, Davis, Luke
Niebel and Sullivan.
Bath will primarily have a twoback look, but will also run some
one-back offense.

We have to work on our passing

game, Garland said. We graduated 83 percent of our passing yards
from a year ago, Garland said.
Defensively, the Wildcats return
tackles Lenny Miles, Tyler Shaw
and Billy Nichols and nose guard
Kyle Lhamon.
The linebacking corps will be a
team strength, including sophomore middle linebacker Gross
(6-foot, 215), who started last year
as a freshman.
Hes (Gross) going to play middle linebacker, but hes also going
to run the ball,Garland said.
Also back are linebackers Jared
Davis, Tyler Shobe (5-11, 198) and
Burkholder.
Shobe plays outside linebacker,
which is really a defensive end,
Garland said. His motor never
stops running.
Graduation did take linebacker
Hunter Weis, the teams leading
tackler with 124 tackles.
Tre Wheeler returns at cornerback and will also play some wide
receiver and could also play some
tailback.
The big key for Bath will be
defense. The Wildcats gave up 33
points-per-game last year, which
ranked eighth in the WBL. It also
gave up 382 yards-per-game (ninth
in the WBL), including 175 on the
ground.
We have to improve on how
many points we give up per game
and that starts by stopping the
run, Garland said.

DIVISION: IV
COACH: Bill Garland
SEASONS, RECORD AT SCHOOL: 2nd, 4-6
LAST YEARS RECORD: 4-6 (4-5 WBL)
RETURNING LETTERMEN: 18
RETURNING STARTERS: Cam Jenkins (Sr., QB);
Blake McGue (Sr., OT); Corey Briggs (Sr., WR);
Kody Toland (Sr., C); Garrett Metcalf (Sr., TE);
Chase Clark (Jr., RB); Easton Rudasill (Jr., OT);
Tre Wheeler (Sr., CB); Jared Davis (Sr., LB); Lenny
Miles (Sr., DT); Tyler Shaw (Sr., DT); Tyler Shobe
(Jr., LB/DE); Dylan Burkholder (Jr., LB); Kyle
Lhamon (Jr., NG); Billy Nichols (Jr., DT); Bo Gross
(Soph., MLB); Austin Lauf (Sr., K); Garrett Norton
(Jr., K).
KEY NEWCOMERS: Ryan Kalb (Soph., S/WR);
Kadean Sullivan (Soph., RB/WR/LB); Luke Niebel
(Sr., S/WR).
OFFENSE: 2-back set; some 1-back and some
I-formation.
DEFENSE: 4-3.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Cam Jenkins started every
game last year and will lead the Wildcats with his
arm and his legs. He threw for 1,710 and ran for 275
and will be counted on to ignite the offense.
SEASON OUTLOOK: The veteran offense returns
its quarterback, running back, three offensive linemen and the tight end. The key will be improving a
defense which gave up plenty of rushing yards and
33 points-per-game. With nine back on defense,
Bath is expected to show improvement.

WBL FORECAST
1. KENTON. Brent Fackler follows coaching legend Mike Mauk. Starting quarterback Trent Hites is a sophomore. But
speedy receivers like Colyn Blackford (89
catches) and Kevin Stoller (77 catches)
along with veteran linemen could make
him look like a veteran.
2. WAPAKONETA. First-year coach Travis
Moyer inherits a talented team ready to
continue the winning ways of the last
four years when the Redskins have gone
33-10, including 9-2 last year.
3. OTTAWA-GLANDORF. Titans will be
trying to get back to the playoffs after
an uncharacteristic absence last season
when they went 6-4.
4. CELINA. A sound defense and the
passing of Caleb Hoyng (1,631 yards,
13 TDs) are the knowns. One of the
unknowns is the offensive line, which will
have four first-year starters.
5. ELIDA. With 10 starters back on
offense, the Bulldogs hope to improve on
last years 5-5 season.
6. DEFIANCE. The Bulldogs have five
starters back on each side of the ball from
a 6-5 team. But finding replacements for
QB Will Batt and receiver Trey Guilliam
will be huge. Defiance got 82 percent of
its offense in the air last season.
7. BATH. With Cam Jenkins (1,710 yards
passing, 17 TDs), four starters on the
offensive line and all of the offensive
backfield returning, the Wildcats hope to
improve on last season when they were
ninth in the WBL in total offense.
8. SHAWNEE. The Indians have 12 starters back from last years 2-8 team, which
could be a reason to expect better things
this year.
9. ST. MARYS. Doug Frye returns to try to
rebuild the Roughriders program. Numbers are up, but St. Marys hasnt won a
game since 2011.
10. VAN WERT. The hope is that young
players who played as freshmen and
sophomores have matured. The Cougars
allowed a WBL-high 44.3 points a game
last season.

New Kenton QB will have veteran receivers

Kenton SCHEDULE

By Mike Miller

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

KENTON After serving 29 years as the defensive

co-ordinator at Kenton, Brent
Fackler is beginning his first
year as the Wildcats head
coach.
Before I always had to just
watch half of the team, Fackler said. Now I have to take
the rest of the Kenton family
in.
Offensively, quarterback
Grant Sherman has moved on
to the University of Toledo.
Sophomore Trent Hites will
take the helm of the Wildcats
spread offense.
Nothing has changed, offensively, but holes will have to
be filled by graduation.
The rookie Hites is progressing every day, according
to Fackler.
The bright spot for the
Kenton squad is the return of
four receivers:. Three seniors,
Colyn Blackford, Luke Jackson, and Kollin Stollar join
with junior Conner Jones to
provide experienced targets
for Hites.
The Wildcats return two
starters on the offensive line
in left tackle Larry Wells
(6-foot-8, 315), who is committed to play at Kentucky.
Right guard Mason Treen
also returns, but that leaves
three spots that Kenton must
fill to give Hites time to throw
the ball.

should be a strong point.
Our defense plays a lot of
the game due to our offense,
Fackler said. We either score
quickly or turn the ball back
so they are on the field for
long period of times.
Tristan Reichelderfer (Sr.,
6-3, 205) returns to anchor
the defense from his middle
linebacker position. Fackler

describes him as a definite

Division I prospect.
Jake Hale, Austin Phillips
and Sylas Smith return to the
defensive line. Trevor and
Travis Downing return to the
defensive backfield at safety.
Fackler feels that there are
two keys to another successful
season for Kenton.
We must be good pass
blockers and we need to

improve the pass rush. Fackler said.

Kenton has five goals and
meeting them would guarantee another hugely successful
season. Those goals are the

Win the WBL

Win the state championship

CELINA Trent Temples first season

at Celina could be considered a success.
A 7-3 record, including a 6-3 slatte in the
Western Buckeye League, is a good foundation in which to build back-to-back winnings seasons for the first time since the
1990s. Only consecutive losses to end the
season kept the Bulldogs from making the
postseason for the first time since 1998.
Getting into the playoffs will be the
Bulldogs focus this season.
Junior quarterback Caleb Hoyng returns
after leading an offense that averaged
more than 30 points per game last season.
Protecting Hoyng will be critical as four
of their five lineman graduated from last
season.
We have our work cut out for us finding athletes that can fill those spots,
Temple said.
Senior Sean Kirk will be Hoyngs primary target. His big play ability and senior
leadership will be a security blanket for
the offense.
Hes one of our three-year letterman,
Temple said. Sean is explosive on offense
and is very sure handed when catching
the football.
Garett Winget will get the majority of
carries from his running back spot.
This is Garetts first year with us,
Temple said. We expect big things from
him.
While the offense will have to sure up
the line, the defense has experience.

The Bulldogs allowed 20.2 points per

Western Buckeye League in defense.

The Bulldogs start the season with Midwest Athletic Conference foe, Versailles,

Our team and coaching staff is excited

Temple said. We know have areas to

Watching our film from last year, you
dont realize at the time how far behind
you are, Recker said. But seeing
where we were at this time last year to
now, everything is so much smoother.
Its the athletes putting the time in. Last
year there was a learning curve and
once we hit July this year, they were
just so strong in how they went about
things.
The big improvement Recker is hoping to see is on the defense. A year ago,
his 4-3 scheme struggled in a big way,
allowing 44.3 points per game.
We just werent physical enough to
stay in a 4-3 against a team like O-G or
Wapak, Recker said. Then wed go
against a good passing team like Kenton
or Celina and wed have to go to a threeman front. So we were always adjusting,
it was like a new defense every week.
We couldnt stop the run, we couldnt
stop the pass, we had missed assignments

OTTAWA When a football team graduates 15 letter

winners, it usually means a
rebuilding season is on the
horizon.
Not for Ottawa-Glandorf.
Over the years, O-G has
found ways to reload. This
season shouldnt be any different.
The Titans went 6-4 in
2013 (5-4 Western Buckeye
League). Lost from graduation are nine starters, five on
offense and four on defense.
Despite losing several
key players from last years
squad, O-G does return 21
letter winners, which is a
testament on how deep the
O-G squad was in 2013.
From a starting standpoint, we have six or seven
guys back who were starters, longtime O-G coach
Ken Schriner said. Were
still juggling positions.
We have a number of guys
that have experience. They
maybe werent starters last
year, but they saw a lot of
action, defensively, probably
more so than offensively.
Our strength is probably
going to be the athleticism at
our skill positions.
Gone from last year is
quarterback Logan Rieman.
In 2013, Rieman passed for
1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. Rieman also rushed
for 391 yards and eight TDs.
Junior Zac Unterbrink
(6-feet, 175 pounds) looks to
be the frontrunner to fill Riemans shoes this season.
He (Unterbrink) really
stepped up this summer,
Schriner said. Were probably going to put a lot on his
shoulders, as a young guy.
We have high expectations
for him. Hes a basketball
guy, has good feet and good
instincts. Hes going to run
the ball and throw the ball.
The Titans spread offense
could have a couple new
wrinkles this season.
Im afraid to call it a
spread, Schriner said with
a smile. My goal is to get
out of the spread and to do
some I (formation) concepts. Thats my strength
up front with the blocking
schemes. And we want to

keep it as simple for the line

as much as we can.
Offensively, we have to
make some changes. We
have to get more solid and
consistent in what we are
doing. Thats what weve
really been working on this
summer.
Last season, O-G averaged
24.7 points per game. Defensively, the Titans gave up
16.4 points per contest.
Not only does O-G have to
replace its signal caller, but
also the players behind him.
We lost Shane Schroeder
(running back) from last
year, Schriner said. This
year, Kyle Niese (5-11, 205)
is a guy who has really
stepped up for us. Hes a
senior and hes excited for
his opportunity to shine.
Hes a tough kid. Hes
about 200 pounds and a
load.
Niese will start at both
running back and on the
defensive line.
Were doing a lot of the
same things we did last
year, Niese said. Were
changing it up a little bit,
because we have a little more
speed and not as much size.
And when one thinks
about O-G, the offensive line
is usually the topic of discussion. This season, the Titans
will need to replace a couple
positions on the line.
Ben Recker (6-3, 245, Sr.)
is an offensive tackle, Schriner said. Jason Schnipke
(6-2, 230, Sr.) is moving to
guard. He was a center for
us last year and we moved
him to guard. Ben Deitering
(6-3, 190, Sr.) is a returning
offensive guard. And Sid
Moening (6-4, 180, Sr.) was
our tight end last year. So,

we have two guys (on the

offensive line) that we have
to replace.
The offensive line is such
a chemistry thing. Its all
about those guys being able
to play together.
Just like on the offensive
side of the football, the
Titans athleticism should
stand out in the defensive
unit.
Were a 3-3 stack,
Schriner said. Were very
multiple in what we do.
Our linebackers are probably the quickest weve ever
had. Thats the strength of
our defense, the ability to
pursue.
One of those athletic
players who will see a great
deal of action this season
is senior Colin Laubenthal
(5-10, 145, wide receiver,
cornerback).
We did lose some critical spots, but we have much
coming back this year,
Laubenthal said. I would
say that everyone this year
is pretty quick. Were quick
to the ball on defense. On
offense, our speed on the
perimeter is great. So, I
would say speed is our best
attribute.
Senior Jake Kahle (5-10,
170, cornerback, wide
receiver), who is coming
back from a broken leg suffered during the basketball
season, agrees with Laubenthal.
We had a good team last
year, but I think this year we
have more speed. This year,
we have a lot of seniors and
weve been playing together
since sixth grade. We know
exactly what everybody is
doing, Kahle said.

1. LEHMAN CATHOLIC. The Cavaliers

lost some big-time players from last
seasons 10-2 team, but quarterback
Nick Rourke is back.
2. FORT LORAMIE. Replacing first-team
All-Ohio running back Delaunte Thornton is a daunting task, but Loramie has
made a habit of getting to the playoffs.
3. RIVERSIDE. The Pirates were one of
only three NWCC teams at .500 or better last season.
4. PERRY. The Commodores think
improved line play offensively and
defensively could make them contenders.
5. RIDGEMONT. Quarterback Corey
Eversole missed all of last season with
a knee injury. Hes back, along with
nine other starters, which might mean
the Gophers can improve on last seasons two wins.
6. UPPER SCIOTO VALLEY. The Rams
have around 30 players on the roster
after struggling with numbers last season. Speed and the running game could
be strengths.
7. WAYNESFIELD-GOSHEN. First-year
coach Tyler Turner will begin a rebuilding program to try to get the Tigers
back to the level they were when they
made the playoffs four times from
2005-12.

DELPHOS For years, Delphos

St. Johns would run the power
sweep. Then, it would run it some
more.
And with running backs like tailback Tyler Jettinghoff and fullback
Luke MacLennan, why not?
Jettinghoff ran for 1,620 yards last
year with 29 TDs. MacLennan ran
for 908 yards and seven TDs.
Both have graduated.
So, at least for this year, the power
sweep is gone.
In its place will be more option
football. The Blue Jays have replaced
the power-I look with a one-back
formation.
Last year when we came into
a game theres no doubt what we
were going to do and that was run
the football, St. Johns coach Todd
Schulte said. We were going to run
a power game and we were going
to run the option and we did those
things very well. Our balance in our
offense last year was power run,
option. There was no such thing as
hey, Were going to throw the ball to
balance things out.
We tweaked a bunch this year.
Youre not going to see two backs
in the backfield for us. We had to
go away from that. We had to make
some tweaks to fit our personnel. I
dont know if theres a word power in

Chris Sommers wants the Wildcats to be
physical as they try to follow up a successful 2013 campaign.
Delphos Jefferson plans to replace the
graduated running back Zavier Buzard
(1,792 yards, 32 touchdowns) with a
committee of junior Dalton Hicks and
sophomore Hunter Binkley at fullback,
while juniors Adam Rode and Mike Cline
will man the halfback position.
We will operate out of the Wing-T
and plan to run the ball often, Sommers
said. We also expect to throw a high
percentage of play-action passes with
sophomore Jace Stockwell manning the
quarterback position.
The Wildcats return five starters on
defense to form a solid nucleus to build
around.
Defensive end Jordan McCann returns,
along with linebackers Hicks and junior
Drew Wannemacher. Trevor Dudgeon
and Josh Teman return to anchor the
defensive backfield.

Enthusiasm high at Allen East

By Mark Altstaetter

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

HARROD Allen East is

coming off a 4-6 season (2-6
in the Northwest Conference) and is looking to take
it to the next level in 2014.
We only have 13 returning
letter winners, Allen East
coach Mike Abbey said. But,
a lot of those guys played
on both sides of the ball. We
have to replace Ross Stewart
our fullback. We have a couple guys vying for that spot.
So, thats probably the main
spot we have to fill.
Last season, Stewart was a
workhorse for the Mustangs,
rushing for 1,508 yards on
240 carries and 17 touchdowns.
We lost a couple linebackers also, Abbey said. But
our strength is probably our
returning linemen. We only
lost one lineman from last
year. So, that should be a
strength for us.
Senior Jacob Sherrick
(6-foot-3, 285 pounds) is one
of those returning linemen.
We have a good, solid
core coming back me,
Garrett Heuerman (6-3,
292, Sr.) and Travis Wireman (5-10, 190, Sr.), three
seniors, who all have started
three-plus years, Sherrick
said. We have a lot of experience. We have another guy
coming in, junior Austin
Louth (6-0, 265). He looks to
be real solid. So, we have just
one spot to fill. We know it
(the offensive line) is going
to be our mainstay and will

be solid every night.

Heuerman feels the Mustangs can compete in the
upper echelon of the NWC.
We only had one guy who
graduated last year (on the
offensive line). Were looking
for that to be our strength
this year, Heuerman said.
Thats where we would like
to be. The NWC is a very
tough league. The teams that
are going to be at the top will
be at the top. Were hoping
to be in the mix this year,
definitely.
Allen East will also have
its signal-caller back, Tanner
Stippich (6-1, 171, Sr.). In
2013, Stippich completed 28
of 65 passes for 463 yards,
four TDs and two interceptions.
Hes a senior this year.
He had a great summer and
should have a nice season,
Abbey said about Stippich.
Allen East has traditionally
been a running team over
the years. However, the Mustangs look to be a threat in
the air as well.
We might look to throw
it around a little more this
year, Stippich said. We really worked hard at it (passing)
this summer. So, were looking to improve on that part
of our game this year.
Despite having its quarterback and most of its linemen
back, the Allen East coaching
staff still faces the huge task
of replacing Stewart in the
backfield.
Logan Schick (6-1, 181,
Jr.) looks like he might be
right there (to take Stewarts

16 sophomores. So, we have

spot), Abbey said. He had
a knee surgery last year. The a couple really good classes

This years team is focused on the

We address that (focusing on the
future) quite a bit, coach Chip Otten
said. We talk about not taking things for

does not mean you are going to win and

coaches and doing the things that got you
here is what we talk about. You remind

The offense is led by all-Ohio and
reigning offensive player of the year in

as a junior Hoying carried the ball 216

137 of 234 passes for 1,904 yards and 21

Hoying is headed to Eastern Michigan.
The position he plays he touches the

smartest player on the field. Hes such
a difference maker at the high school
level.

Finding quality skill players for Hoying
will be important for the Coldwater passing attack. Kraig Schoenherr (1 catch, 45
yards), Aaron Harlamert (4 catches, 54),
and Kyle McKibben (3 catches, 3 yards)
have limited experience.
Although Hoying does most of the running, Schoenherr and Chris Post return
after combining for 410 yards on 66 carries last year.
The offensive line returns nearly intact.
Guards Blake Spangler (5-10, 240) and
Caleb Madaj (6-1, 270), join tackles
Malave Bettinger (6-1, 220) and Nick
Clune(6-2, 205) to pave the way for an
offense that averaged 36.1 points and 345
yards per game last season.
Defensively, Hoying will patrol the
secondary. Last season he recorded 89

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

The good thing for P-G is

the team returns a solid crop of
seniors, 10, and letterwinners, 11.
Many of those players are quality athletes also. Jacob Basinger
(senior, 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, QB/
SS) takes over as the quarterback
this year after nearly rushing for
1,000 yards as a running back he
missed a few games with a concussion. Jacob Miller (Sr., WR/CB)
is fast and has good hands while
Hunter Hovest (Jr., WR/CB) is
quick and versatile.
Josiah Basinger (Jr., RB/OLB)
is a big strong running back while
Ryan Lee (Fr., WR/DB) is young
but has great instincts and plenty
of athletic ability.
The offensive line overall should
be a big strength with three, maybe
a fourth, senior starting up front.
One area of concern, however, is
depth. While the team has many
seniors in key positions, the Rockets only have three juniors on the
team and six sophomores. So staying healthy is a must.
All our seniors are working
really hard, Myers said. I just
believe if you work hard, good
things happen. I know weve been
working hard since I took over, in
the weight room, in agility, in the
camps and everything. Im optimistic, you have to be. Im ready to see
what weve got.

Wolf, offensive line to spearhead Minster

By Scott Brinkman

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

MINSTER The Minster Wildcats have hovered near the top half
of the Midwest Athletic Conference for the past several years. But
they havent won a MAC title since
1989, the last time they won the
state championship.
Getting back to championship
form is possible if the Wildcats can
focus on details.
We have to continue to get better each and every day, Minster
coach Geron Stokes said. Our
attention to detail has to be fanatical and our willingness to compete
has to be at an all-time high. If we
do things the right way and play
with a relentless motor, well be all
right.
The foundation is set with
several senior offensive linemen
returning.
Tackles Hayden Schindler and
J.R. Nixon and center Logan Pack
join classmate Logan Pack to make
a formidable front. The offensive

line paved the way for a unit that

averaged 27 points per game last
season and rushed for more than
150 yards per game.
Eli Wolf is a talented tight end,
who is heading to Eastern Michigan University.
Wolf holds the school record in
both receptions (10) and yards
(250), both recorded last season
against Anna. On the season Wolf
had 48 receptions for 907 yards and
nine scores.
Running back Sam Dues returns
after rushing for 987 yards last
year.
Junior quarterback Josh Nixon
passed for 2,161 yards last season
completing 139 of his 256 passes.
As long as the offensive unit
improves the Wildcats can continue
to put points on the scoreboard.
We need to keep getting better
each and every day, Stokes said.
We want to be the most fundamental football team in the country.
Weve worked fairly hard for this
upcoming season so we are excited
to get it started. Our group of

seniors has been tremendous leaders and have set really high standards for our underclassmen.
The defensive side of the ball will
have to continue to grow and get
better as a unit. Last season the
Wildcats allowed 23.1 points per
game.
Wolf will spearhead the attack.
Last season he recorded 43.5 tackles, six tackles for loss and three
interceptions. Dues made 39 stops
while senior Joe Trzaska recorded
22 tackles and Schindler added 18.
There is a whole crew of kids
that are working their tails off
competing for spots that have a
chance to make a big impact on our
football team, Stokes said. We are
looking forward to kids stepping up
and winning competitions.
The Wildcats will know how
good they are by the midway point
of the season. The open the season

OFFENSE: Spread. Jacob Basinger moves to quarterback behind a strong offensive line.
DEFENSE: 4-3 base.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Basinger. The senior, twoyear letterwinner nearly rushed for 1,000 yards a

few games with a concussion. This year, he takes

SEASON OUTLOOK: The team is adapting to its

Though there has been a learning curve with his
new defense and his version of the spread offense,
Myers is optimistic with the athletes and their
work effort.

Fort Recovery aiming for continued improvement

By Scott Brinkman

TLNsports@civitasmedia.com

FORT RECOVERY Brent Niekamp

begins his 10th season as Fort Recoverys
head coach.
Although the Indians have yet to post
a winning record, they certainly have
become more competitive.
In 2010 the Indians were outscored by
more than 21 points per game. Last season despite going 3-7, Fort Recovery was
outscored by just nine points per contest.
On the offensive side of the ball Mitch
Stammen, Kyle Schroer and Cole Hull
are skilled players that are expected to
carry the load. Stammen carried the ball
34 times last season for 213 yards for 6.3
yards per carry and one score. Schroer
had 13 rushes for 93 yards for 7.2 yards
per carry. Hull rushed seven times for 42
yards. As a team the Indians averaged

115.2 yards rushing per game.

Quarterback Stammen completed 22
of 52 yards for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
If Stammen is not throwing passes he
is will be a primary target. The senior led
the team with 37 receptions for 351 yards
and four touchdowns last year. Schroer
and Hull combined for 38 catches and five
touchdowns.
Up front Seth Riegle, Alex Schoen and
Nick Link will help a team that averaged
17.2 points per game last season. Finding
two more linemen and some depth will be
critical.
With 45 players on the roster, many
players will play on both sides of the bal,l
so injuries and developing quality backups
will be very important.
Linebacker Seth Riegle returns after
leading the team with 112 tackles and five
sacks last year. Schroer made 37 stops

If there is one thing my gut seems to

the season that really begins an incredible run of success by area teams.
From the WBL to Lima Senior to a
few other teams in the area, this region
is now packed with good coaches and
programs that see themselves as contenders.
That type of attitude leads to a ton of

Running backs Tristen Chambers and
Cody Coffman will be asked to carry the
load on the ground as the Panthers attack
with a variation of the spread offense.
Jared Puthoff (6-3, 240) will anchor the
offensive line. Seniors Adam Stutz (6-0,
220), Collin Leighner (5-9, 185) along
with juniors Clayton Bollenbacher (5-10,
175), Logan Sutter (5-10, 250) Alex
Rodriguez (6-0, 190), Jordan Rodriguez
(6-2, 220) and Caleb Carlson (6-0, 175)
will battle for playing time.
Lack of depth, Cairns cited as a team
weakness. Stay injury free and establish
a running game to take pressure of the
quarterback. Numbers are low, so we
cant afford any injuries.
Playing on both sides of the ball will
be expected by many of the Panther players. Offensive lineman in the trenches
will have to be battling in the defensive
trenches as well. Junior Caleb Carlson
(6-0, 175) will add to the mix.
Coffman, Lautzenheiser and Bollenbacher are linebackers expected to fill in
on the 4-3 defense and help a unit that
allowed 26.7 points per game last season.
In the secondary seniors Hayden
Abromavich (5-10, 165), Gangwer, and
Heindel join juniors Baily Rodriguez and
Dugan Sage and Kevin Flaugher.
This years team consists of tough,
hard-working group of blue collar type
players, Cairns said. Kids are tight and
love playing together.
Parkway will open the season traveling
to Convoy to take on Crestview.
