TRAC FORECAST
1. TOLEDO CENTRAL CATHOLIC. Quarterback DeShone Kizer has moved on to
Notre Dame, but Central Catholic has five
first-team All-TRAC players returning.
2. TOLEDO WHITMER. The Panthers have
been in the playoffs seven of the last eight
years and tied Central Catholic for first in
the TRAC coaches preseason poll.
3. TOLEDO ST. FRANCIS. Tailback Lamar
Carswell is coming off a season when he
rushed for 1,248 yards, including a monster 405-yard game against Lima Senior.
The Knights will ride him as far as he can
take them.
4. LIMA SENIOR. The Spartans strength
is an impressive group of fast receivers
and running backs. If they find a quarterback and tighten up the defense, they
could improve on last years 5-5 record.
5. FREMONT ROSS. Former Cincinnati
Bengals receiver Craig Yeast will take over
as head coach after Ross went 5-5 in Derek
Kidwells final season last fall.
6. TOLEDO ST. JOHN. The top college
prospect for the Titans is center Sean Rattay. They need to find some players at the
skill positions.
7. FINDLAY. The Trojans dropped to 2-8
after going 8-2 in 2012. A solid core of
offensive players, led by quarterback Brandon Muehl, running back Emanual Mogalu
and receiver Grant Niswander could make
them better this year.
8. OREGON CLAY. Last year, one coach
didnt vote Lima Senior last in the TRAC
preseason poll and gave his vote to Clay.
This year the Eagles were a unanimous
last place selection.

WAPAKONETA When
Travis Moyer became the
head coach at Wynford
High School in Bucyrus in
1999, he was all of 22 years
old with little coaching
experience.
In the 13 years that followed, he went 118-28
with nine North Central
Conference titles, eight
playoff berths and six
undefeated regular seasons.
When he left, Wynford had
a 58-game regular season
unbeaten streak.
Two years after stepping
aside as the coach for the
Royals, Moyer steps into
a Wapakoneta program
which has become accustomed to success after former coach Doug Frye went
back to St. Marys.
In Fryes four years with
the Redskins, he led the
team to two of the programs six playoff appearances and had the most
wins in a four-year stretch
of any Wapak coach ever.
A year ago, Wapakoneta
went 9-2 overall (8-1 Western Buckeye League) and
were the third seed for the
playoffs in Division III,
Region 10. It lost its playoff
game, 41-34, in an overtime
thriller against Springfield
Shawnee.
This year, Wapakoneta enters the season with
many of those same players back and a rejuvenated
coach.
I love coaching, Moyer
said. Its an opportunity
and 0-10.
And while Frye admits its a huge
challenge to get the ship righted,
the situation is far from hopeless.
Obviously this is a big challenge, Frye said. But there has
been a lot of success here in the
past. So you do have a community
filled with people who do know
what it takes to be successful. I tell
the kids, here is what were going
to do and as we do them, well get
the program back where it should
be.
St. Marys does have a few
positives working in its favor since
Fryes return: pulling in a fantastic coaching staff; and a massive
improvement in the number of athletes going out for football.
Last year, the varsity roster had
40 players and this year the team is
at 71 not including freshmen. The
eighth-grade team last year had 14
players but this year, the freshman
team is up to 37, giving St. Marys
108 total kids playing high school
football.
The No. 1 thing we wanted to do
was get kids interested in football
again, Frye said. And obviously
the numbers speak for themselves.
Honestly, it has nothing to do
with me, I attribute that to our
coaches. We had an advantage here
because I had been here before so
the kids knew from their relatives
and the community what to expect.
But the fact we can get those types

Elidas Clark Etzler gets to the outside during a game against Defiance last season at Elida.
By Mark Altstaetter
TLNsports@civitasmedia.com
ELIDA SCHEDULE
Elidas Logan Alexander carries the ball during a game against Bath last season.
We always try to be
balanced, 50-50, run-topass, Carpenter said. I
think thats what sets us
apart, when you look at
the spreads in the league.
We want to be more balanced.
In the backfield, the
Bulldogs will rely mostly
on one athlete.
Dez (Desmend White)
is going to get some carries at running back,
Carpenter said. When
Seanquez (Frye) got hurt
last year, he stepped up
and got some carries. So,
hes probably going to get
the bulk of the carries this
year for us.
White (5-8, 180, Sr.) is
ready for the challenge.
He will also play middle
linebacker. Last season,
White was third on the
team in tackles with 63. In
his limited action at running back in 2013, White
ran the ball 15 times for
68 yards.
I got a lot better conditioning this year, White
said. Coach has pushed
us hard. So, Ill be ready.
Im going to block a lot

COACH: Bill Garland
SEASONS, RECORD AT SCHOOL: 2nd, 4-6

(Jr., K).
KEY NEWCOMERS: Ryan Kalb (Soph., S/WR);
Kadean Sullivan (Soph., RB/WR/LB); Luke Niebel
(Sr., S/WR).
OFFENSE: 2-back set; some 1-back and some
I-formation.
DEFENSE: 4-3.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Cam Jenkins started every
game last year and will lead the Wildcats with his
arm and his legs. He threw for 1,710 and ran for 275
and will be counted on to ignite the offense.
SEASON OUTLOOK: The veteran offense returns
its quarterback, running back, three offensive linemen and the tight end. The key will be improving a
defense which gave up plenty of rushing yards and
33 points-per-game. With nine back on defense,
Bath is expected to show improvement.
WBL FORECAST
1. KENTON. Brent Fackler follows coaching legend Mike Mauk. Starting quarterback Trent Hites is a sophomore. But
speedy receivers like Colyn Blackford (89
catches) and Kevin Stoller (77 catches)
along with veteran linemen could make
him look like a veteran.
2. WAPAKONETA. First-year coach Travis
Moyer inherits a talented team ready to
continue the winning ways of the last
four years when the Redskins have gone
33-10, including 9-2 last year.
3. OTTAWA-GLANDORF. Titans will be
trying to get back to the playoffs after
an uncharacteristic absence last season
when they went 6-4.
4. CELINA. A sound defense and the
passing of Caleb Hoyng (1,631 yards,
13 TDs) are the knowns. One of the
unknowns is the offensive line, which will
have four first-year starters.
5. ELIDA. With 10 starters back on
offense, the Bulldogs hope to improve on
last years 5-5 season.
6. DEFIANCE. The Bulldogs have five
starters back on each side of the ball from
a 6-5 team. But finding replacements for
QB Will Batt and receiver Trey Guilliam
will be huge. Defiance got 82 percent of
its offense in the air last season.
7. BATH. With Cam Jenkins (1,710 yards
passing, 17 TDs), four starters on the
offensive line and all of the offensive
backfield returning, the Wildcats hope to
improve on last season when they were
ninth in the WBL in total offense.
8. SHAWNEE. The Indians have 12 starters back from last years 2-8 team, which
could be a reason to expect better things
this year.
9. ST. MARYS. Doug Frye returns to try to
rebuild the Roughriders program. Numbers are up, but St. Marys hasnt won a
game since 2011.
10. VAN WERT. The hope is that young
players who played as freshmen and
sophomores have matured. The Cougars
allowed a WBL-high 44.3 points a game
last season.

injury in Week 5 and missed the rest
of the season.
SEASON OUTLOOK: The Indians
should be better on defense, with
seven starters back. Offensively,
they have Fox to run the ball, but
need to improve the passing game

Celina quarterback Caleb Hoyng is wrapped up by the Wapakoneta defense during a game last season.
DIVISION: III
COACH: Trent Temple
SEASONS, RECORD AT SCHOOL:

LAST YEARS RECORD: 7-3 (6-3
WBL)
RETURNING STARTERS: 10
KEY NEWCOMERS: Cayden Wilson
(Sr.), Cole Stephens (Sr.), Mitch
Mabry (Jr.), Zach Rieger (Jr.), Garett Winget (Jr.), Ryan Harter (So.).
OFFENSE: Shotgun/Spread
DEFENSE: 43
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sean Kirk is
a 3-year letter winner. He is a sure
handed ball catcher and explosive
on the offensive side of the ball.
Kirks ability to be near the ball
on defense gives him a chance to
make plays on that side of the ball
as well.
SEASON OUTLOOK: With the
loss of 80 percent of their offensive line, the Bulldogs will have
to rebuild their offensive front if
they hope to protect their skilled
players. The defense will be ahead
of the offense and will need to be
stout to keep them in games early
in the season.

Wert switched to a 3-3 to get more athletes on the field who can just react and
make tackles.
The guys can just play, Recker said.
They dont have to think, its looked
really good. We just really needed to
figure out a way to stop the run because
everyone just ran the ball all over us.
Were really anxious to see how it works
for us.

BRODY HOYING
(5-10, 180, Senior)
Coldwater
Quarterback/Defensive back
Hoying is headed to Eastern Michigan

runs of 9, 3 and 32 yards. In the air, he

WIDE RECEIVER
JUNIEL LILES
(5-7, 170, Senior)

The Lima Senior offense was remodeled last year to feature a wide-open

it all.
Liles ran for 1,478 yards on 227 carries with 18 TDs. He also caught 18
passes for 204 yards and three TDs.
His explosive ability to make defenders
miss helped guide Lima Senior to a 5-5

around the ball.
SEASON OUTLOOK: With the graduation of
the Blue Jays top two running backs, theyll
look to throw more this year. They will also
run more option. The power game is out and a
new-look, versatile attack is in. St. Johns will
aim for a return trip to the playoffs.
Wide receiver Evan Hays, who caught nine passes for 111 yards last year, will play a bigger role
for a St. Johns team that intends to pass more often.

1. CRESTVIEW. The Knights have
nine starters back on offense and
defense from the team that got
the schools first playoff win.
2. ADA. Freshman Seth Conley will
start at quarterback in the Bulldogs pass-dominated offense. He
will have returning starters at four
of the five offensive line positions
in front of him, which should make
the transition smoother.
3. BLUFFTON. Robbie Stratton, a
two-way first-team All-Northwest
Conference player, leads eight
returning starters.
4. SPENCERVILLE. The Bearcats
have starters back at five offensive positions and seven on
defense.
5. DELPHOS JEFFERSON. The
Wildcats tied Crestview and Ada
for the NWC title in 2013. Running
the ball is one of the things they
expect to do this year.
6. ALLEN EAST. Finding someone
to replace Ross Stewart in the running game is a priority. Whoever
gets the ball will have four veteran
offensive linemen in front of him.
7. COLUMBUS GROVE. The Bulldogs hope a year of experience for
what was a very young roster in
2013 produces more than the two
wins they got last season.
8. PAULDING. The Panthers
made some small steps last
year when they won two games.
Theyre hoping for more this
season.
The Bearcats will start junior Mason Nourse at quarterback to direct their
Wing-T offense.

who made 92 tackles last season and
Jake Schmidt with 101.
The Cavaliers start the season with
non-conference juggernauts Kenton and
Columbus Bishop Hartley before opening the Midwest Athletic Conference.
We think we have to win one of the
first two to get in (to the playoffs),
Otten said. We are the only Division
V school in our conference, so its a
battle.

MINSTER The Minster Wildcats have hovered near the top half
of the Midwest Athletic Conference for the past several years. But
they havent won a MAC title since
1989, the last time they won the
state championship.
Getting back to championship
form is possible if the Wildcats can
focus on details.
We have to continue to get better each and every day, Minster
coach Geron Stokes said. Our
attention to detail has to be fanatical and our willingness to compete
has to be at an all-time high. If we
do things the right way and play
with a relentless motor, well be all
right.
The foundation is set with
several senior offensive linemen
returning.
Tackles Hayden Schindler and
J.R. Nixon and center Logan Pack
join classmate Logan Pack to make
a formidable front. The offensive
seniors has been tremendous leaders and have set really high standards for our underclassmen.
The defensive side of the ball will
have to continue to grow and get
better as a unit. Last season the
Wildcats allowed 23.1 points per
game.
Wolf will spearhead the attack.
Last season he recorded 43.5 tackles, six tackles for loss and three
interceptions. Dues made 39 stops
while senior Joe Trzaska recorded
22 tackles and Schindler added 18.
There is a whole crew of kids
that are working their tails off
competing for spots that have a
chance to make a big impact on our
football team, Stokes said. We are
looking forward to kids stepping up
and winning competitions.
The Wildcats will know how
good they are by the midway point
of the season. The open the season
against Ft. Loramie and Lehman
Catholic before opening make play
with state champions Coldwater
and Marion Local in weeks three
and four.

MAC Forecast
1. MARION LOCAL. Flyers have 14 starters
back from last years 15-0 Division VII state
champion team and are going for their
fourth straight state title.
2. COLDWATER. Quarterback Brody Hoying, an Eastern Michigan verbal commitment, will try to lead the Cavaliers to their
third straight Division V state title.
3. MINSTER. Wildcats have lots of offense
with Eastern Michigan commitment tight
end Eli Wolf, quarterback Josh Nixon and
running back Sam Dues.
4. DELPHOS ST. JOHNS. The Blue Jays
are one of several teams in the area who
say theyre going to install a spread offense
this season.
5. ANNA. The Rockets first NCAA Division I
recruit, offensive lineman Chandler Cotterman, will be a key in trying to bounce back
from a 4-6 record last season.
6. ST. HENRY. Redskins ended last season
on a three-game winning streak. A fast
start would be helpful since Coldwater and
Marion Local are waiting in weeks 4 and 5.
7. VERSAILLES. The Tigers lost four close
games in a 3-7 season last fall. Finding a
quarterback is a top priority.
8. FORT RECOVERY. The Indians hope
the growing pains of a 3-7 season with
only six seniors on the roster last year
are behind them.
9. PARKWAY. Developing a running
game and staying healthy, without a deep
roster, are two things the Panthers hope
they can do.
10. NEW BREMEN. The Cardinals reaffirmed their commitment to fielding a
competitive program in the off-season
when there were rumors dropping football
was among the options. It might take a
while to see results, though.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Jacy Goettemoeller is a

hampered Goettemoeller in the past. If the 5-10
running back can be healthy it could be another
great season in Maria Stein.
SEASON OUTLOOK: No program has had as
much success in the last three years as the Flyers. Talented players with state championship
experience litter the roster. Expectations continue to remain high as Marion Local reloads for
another deep run into the post season.
