Eastern battles Cherokee

Committee approves
bid to outfit officers

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

It was Eastern versus Cherokee in girls varsity basketball on Jan. 13 at Eastern. Pictured is No. 4 forward/guard Molly Fendrick, a junior, as she takes the ball toward the hoop. Despite Eastern's best efforts, the final score had Cherokee winning, 39-11.

Body cameras are coming to

the Voorhees Township Police Department.
At its Jan. 12 meeting, the
Voorhees Township Committee
passed a resolution accepting a
bid from the company Digital
Ally in Lenexa, Kan., to provide
the police department with compact wearable digital video systems for officers.
Voorhees Township administrator Larry Spellman said cameras are a result of the law signed
by Gov. Christie in September
that mandated cameras must be
installed in police cars or all officers be equipped with cameras on
their person during patrol.
The new state law included a
mechanism for covering the cost

State no longer
charges for
veterans death
certificates
Freeholder Deputy Director
Edward McDonnell wants all veterans and their families to know
that the state will no longer
charge for veterans death certificates.
Normally, the state charges
families $25 to obtain a death certificate. Under the new law, deceased veterans legal representatives, estate executors or family
members wont have to pay that
fee, although they would still
need to pay for additional copies
or expedited shipping.
Our Veterans Affairs Office
can assist veterans and their families with this benefit, and works
to provide greater access to all of
the programs these men and
women have earned through
their service to our country, said
McDonnell, liaison to the Camden County Office of Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Affairs Office has been recognized for the
outstanding work they do for our
military. Providing this service is
just a small way to say thank you
to the proud veterans who have
served our nation.
The Camden County Office of
Veterans Affairs can provide information on other veterans
services, including burial benefits, funeral honor guards and the
Camden County Veterans Cemetery at Harleigh. For more information, call the Camden County
Office of Veterans Affairs at 1-800464-VETS (8387).

Voorhees resident, 40, dies from flu

Virtua shares tips to fight illness that claimed life of Nicole Born
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
On Jan. 4, 40-year-old Voorhees
resident Nicole Born passed away
at Presbyterian University of
Pennsylvania
Hospital
in
Philadelphia from complications
from Influenza Human Isolate
Type A, more commonly know as
the flu, according to the Camden
County health officer and the
state Department of Health.
Born, a wife and mother of
two, was admitted to Virtua Hospital in Voorhees on Jan. 2 with
symptoms of shortness of breath
and fever.
After performing preliminary
laboratory tests and prescribing
medications, Virtua discharged
Born, and she was transported to
Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania while on a ventilator.
According to the most recent
state Department of Health respiratory virus surveillance report,
the southern area of the state,
Burlington and Camden counties
and below, are undergoing a
moderate influenza activity
level.
To avoid and fight the flu, Virtua has recommended the following information and tips.
According to Dr. Jasmeet Singh
Bhogal, medical director of Virtua Express Urgent Care, the flu
is acute respiratory illness, usually seen in the winter months, and
is caused by the caused by the Influenza A or Influenza B virus.
Bhogal said flu is contagious
mainly through respiratory secretions, and typically is the result of coming in close contact
with patients who have the flu.
Bhogal cites the period of contagiousness for those with the flu
as usually one day before the start
of the symptoms to five to seven
days after the illness has begun.
Bhogal said flu vaccinations
are good to get because they help
fight the strains of the virus that
cause the flu, and in some cases
can help decrease the severity of
the symptoms that the flu would
otherwise cause in higher-risk
patients who are older or have
other medical problems.

I think its a very safe vaccine

to have, Bhogal said.
The only real contrary indications to the vaccine is if someone
is allergic to a particular component of the vaccine and there are
some issues with some vaccines
with egg allergies, but really overall the vaccine itself is very safe
to have.
However, according to Bhogal,
even when vaccinated, people can
still get the flu, as it depends on
what strains of flu are most
prevalent in the community compared to the current years vaccine and if it was made to fight
those strains or not, as with this
years vaccine.
This years vaccine hasnt been
as effective as previous years because the strain of virus thats
being passed around isnt similar
to whats included in the vaccine.
According to the most recent
FluView report, the weekly Influenza surveillance reports prepared by the Influenza division of
the Center for Disease Control,
only one-third of the 288 Influenza A (H3N2) viruses tested have
been characterized as similar to
the Influenza A component of the

vaccine being given in the Northern Hemisphere. That leaves

about two-thirds of the viruses
analyzed between Oct. 1 and Jan.
3 more similar to different types
of H3N2, which are not included
in this years vaccine.
For those who think they
might have the flu, Bhogal said
typical symptoms include cold
symptoms such as congestion,
cough, fevers and body aches,
with symptoms such as nausea
and vomiting more present in
children as compared to adults.
According to Bhogal, patients
who think they have the flu can
for the most part manage their
symptoms as long as they rest at
home, drink plenty of fluids, and
use over-the-counter medications.
Yet if those symptoms persist
or worsen, Bhogal advises seeking professional medical assistance.
Virtua also has the following
general tips for those looking to
avoid getting the flu:
Get a flu vaccination, as the
flu season encompasses both the
winter and spring. Within two

School budget talks are about to begin

chool budgets are on the horizon
statewide. There once was a
time when residents had a direct way to give their input to the
budget, by voting yay or nay for
its passage. That opportunity has, for
the most part, been removed in our
state, but it doesnt mean you cant,
and shouldnt, be involved in the
process.
The toughest job in New Jersey
right now? School board member has
to be at or near the top of the list.
Whether you support Gov. Christies
approach to budgeting, school board
members have had a tough time dealing with a reduction in state aid over
the last few years.
The vast majority of board members dont want to raise taxes and/or

cut services. But, sometimes, there is

no other option.
Across the state, almost all school
districts will be doing less with less.
But did your board cut enough from
the budget? Too much? Do you agree
with the tax rate? Do you think it
should have been higher to provide
more services? What are your ideas
for cutting expenses and raising revenues?
Whatever the budget situation

proves to be this year, what needs to

happen between now and next year to
make things better?
We invite you to write letters to the
editor to share your thoughts with the
rest of the community. If you support
the budget, if you oppose it, if you
have ideas that could bring additional
revenue into your school district or
help to cut costs, now is the time to
share them.
Between now and when the school
budget is passed, be involved as much
as you can. Attend school board meetings and express your thoughts.
Youll be sending a message to your
board of education regarding what
you would like to see take place in future years years that promise to be
difficult yet again.

Mayor: We should honor dream of MLK, Jr.

I have a dream that one day this nation
will rise up and live out the true meaning
of its creed: We hold these truths to be selfevident; that all men are created equal.
These were the words of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., in one of the most famous
speeches ever delivered on American soil.
This week, we honor the memory of this
civil rights pioneer who dared to dream.
Dr. King followed the non-violent protest
philosophies of Gandhi and constantly reminded his followers that their fight for
equality would be victorious if they did
not resort to bloodshed. Between 1957 and
1968, Dr. King traveled more than six million miles and gave more than 2,500 speeches, while writing five books in support of
his cause. On Aug. 23, 1963, more than
250,000 people gathered in Washington,
D.C., where Dr. King led a peaceful march
to the Capitol Building to support the passing of laws that guaranteed every American equal civil rights. It was on the steps of

the Lincoln Memorial that Dr. King

delivered his legendary speech later
entitled "I Have a
Dream."
During his crusade, Dr. King was
awarded five honorary degrees and
named "Man of the
Year" by Time Magazine in 1963. At
the age of 35, he became the youngest
Michael
man to receive the
Nobel Peace Prize
Mignogna
and donated his
prize money of MAYORS MESSAGE
$54,123 to the civil rights movement,
On the evening of April 4, 1968, while
standing on the balcony of his motel room
in Memphis, Tenn., this man of peace was

violently assassinated.
Through the 1980s, controversy surrounded the idea of a Martin Luther King
Day. While many petitioned the president
to make Jan. 15 a federal legal holiday, others still opposed the idea. Finally, in 1986,
President Ronald Reagan declared the
third Monday in January a federal legal
holiday, commemorating Dr. Martin
Luther King's birthday.
"I have a dream that my four children
will one day live in a nation where they
will not be judged by the color of their skin
but by the content of their character "
We should live this dream in tribute to
Dr. King.

How bout that Apple?

Eastern alum Eli Apple has game-sealing interception
in Ohio States national championship victory
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Eli Apple made a name for himself in Voorhees as a standout for
the Eastern High School football
team. Now his name will be forever etched in Ohio State Buckeye
history as a national champion.
In the national championship
game on Monday, Jan. 12, Oregon
was trailing by 22 points with
time running out in regulation.
Quarterback Marcus Mariota,
desperate to score, unleashed a
pass. Apple was waiting for the
interception.
In that spot, you know quarterbacks start airing it out, and
he just threw one up for grabs and
I was there, said Apple, a redshirt freshman at Ohio State who
graduated from Eastern in 2013.
The interception sealed Ohio
State's 42-20 upset of Oregon in
the national championship, a resounding victory that gave the
Buckeyes a title to bring home to
Columbus.
Its one of the best weeks of
my life, Apple said. Being a national champion, being able to
celebrate with the best guys Ive
ever been around from a football
standpoint. Its been amazing.
The team returned to the university on Tuesday the 13th with
a raucous crowd welcoming it at
the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
It was incredible. Rolling into
the Woody Hayes Center, people
were outside waving and yelling
and screaming, Apple said.
That reception continued at

were filled with messages of congratulations and excitement.

That atmosphere is one of
Apples favorite parts of playing
at Ohio State.
Its crazy playing on the big
stage with 108,000 fans at a home
game or going on the road to Penn
State. Its a lot different than playing Cherokee or Washington
Township, but for me its still football, no matter where you play,
Apple said.
There is one thing Apple does
regret from his national championship experience.
Not keeping the ball he intercepted.
I just handed it to the ref. I
wanted to celebrate with my

would keep it, Apple said.

Freeholder Board launches

website with prevention toolkit
By Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.
The
Freeholder
Board and the Addiction Awareness Task
Force have created a
website aimed at assisting the public
with the fight against
opiate addiction.
The
website
www.addictions.camdencounty.com helps to educate residents on the resources available to
prevent and treat addiction. Additionally, the site provides a downloadable prevention toolkit for
community partners such as schools
and civic organizations to utilize in
their own prevention programs.
This is a community problem, and
as a task force we want to support
the efforts of groups already doing
great work in preventing drug abuse
among our residents. The Addiction
Awareness Tool Kit was the next step
in our awareness and prevention efforts.
The task force is made up of students, parents, teachers, healthcare
providers, law enforcement and civic
leaders. The mission of the task
force is to increase awareness among
county residents of heroin and prescription drug abuse and the devastating effects addiction has on our
community.
In addition to raising awareness,
the initial goals of the task force include supporting programs that further reduce demand, including the
expansion of prescription drop
boxes, working with healthcare
providers to implement educational
programs, and creating and advocating for increased treatment options.
Other initiatives the task force is
currently working on include the following:
Expansion of RX drop boxes and
prescription take back programs

Community
awareness events
Partnering with
educators on the development of evidence
based
prevention programs
The launching of
a billboard campaign
to educate loved ones
of the availability of the life-saving
overdose reversal drug Naloxone
Advocacy of policies that increase access to treatment
Development of treatment integration into Naloxone overdose reversals at area emergency rooms
As a county we know that no one is
immune to the addiction of opiates
and the Freeholder Board is focused
on increasing awareness of prevention and treatment options. Since
this is an issue that touches every
area of our community, the Addiction Awareness Task Force is made
up of people from all walks of life
and professional backgrounds.

Be vigilant about hand washing, as there is no such thing as
too much hand washing during
flu season. Lather up for 20 to 30

Sneeze into tissues when

If all else fails, and sickness

of adding cameras to police cars

by increasing the penalty of those
convicted of driving while drunk
by $25, but Spellman said the
township determined it would be
many tickets before the cost of installing cameras in the cars was
fully recouped, so body cameras
were the way to go.
We decided it was cheaper to
get the body cameras for each of
the officers, Spellman said.
Spellman said the cost of
equipping
the
departments
roughly 50 officers with the cameras was about $38,000.
According to Spellman, it will
take a few months before the department has the cameras, and
some time after that to finalize
policies regarding their use,
which Chief Louis Bordi is working on with the state.
Even if we had them in our officers hands today, we wouldnt
start using them until we get our
policies in place, Spellman said.
I know one of the things the
state is looking at is can the camera data be OPRA-able (requested
through the New Jersey Open
Public Records Act), and just how
and just what are the procedures
for wearing them and turning

them off.
The cameras come at a time
when police departments across
the nation have be dealing with
questions regarding the possible
use of excessive force in high profile cases, such as the shooting of
Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.
Digital Allys website markets
the cameras as allowing police departments to record video and
optional audio from your own
point of view wherever you need
it and helping them protect
your job and department and increasing the rate and speed of
convictions.
Spellman said the hope is that
what is happening in Ferguson
and other places can be avoided
in Voorhees with cameras on
every officer accurately recording events as they unfold, which
could save the township money
on lawsuits. He also said there
was no question about police
body cameras being the future.
With a camera, theres no second-guessing what happened,
Spellman said.
In other news:
Committee approved the
transfer of a consumption liquor
license at 1031 Voorhees Drive.
Edward Hale was reappointed
to the Voorhees Township Environmental Commission. Hale was
mistakenly left off the appointments made during the committees reorganization meeting. The
Environmental
Commission
meets on the second Tuesday of
each month at 7:30 p.m.
The next meeting of the
Voorhees Township Committee is
scheduled for Jan. 26.
