The mission of the

Young People’s Ministry

of the
Tennessee Conference
is to share
-One Faith
-One Love
-One God
connecting ALL to the
Body of Christ.

I hope you find this publication useful as you decide how to supplement your ministry during
2010. It was created to provide a comprehensive description of the ministry events and training
opportunities offered by the Young People’s Ministry of the Tennessee Conference. I thank you for
your loyalty and desire to be connected to the Body of Christ throughout the Tennessee Conference
and beyond.
There are many ways for you and your youth group to be involved in designing these ministry
opportunities. Please share this magazine with your youth, their parents, and the members of your
church.
Thank you for all that you do to connect the youth in your community to the life-changing
message of Jesus Christ as they travel their journey of faith. Please let me know how we can serve
you to meet your needs as you develop a sustainable disciple-rich ministry.
In Christ,

A unique component of Young People’s Ministry in the
Tennessee Conference is the use of Design Teams.
Design Teams consist of youth and adults who work
together to create the ministry events found in this
booklet. Youth leadership is a priority and is most
developed and demonstrated through the practice of
creating and designing opportunities for spiritual
growth.

In order for the design teams to function as

necessary, WE NEED YOU! There are some guidelines set by our standing rules that relate to
design teams and those are listed below. If you are interested in being a part of a design team

District Youth Worker Gatherings — Connecting youth workers together to serve Christ!
The challenges of ministry are tough. The challenges
of ministry while feeling disconnected are even
tougher. In order to increase connectivity, gain input,
fellowship, and study the scriptures together monthly
district youth worker gatherings will be held at local
churches inside of each district.

If you would like to host a gathering for your district,

please contact Brad Fiscus, Conference Director of
Young People’s Ministries at 615-327-1533 or 1-800-
403-5795. The gathering will consist of fellowship, a
scriptural focus and study, opportunities for input and
discussion about district and conference ministry.

Youth Service Fund is unique to the United Meth-

youth, and given to youth to be used to help
other youth. Each year 70% of the money we
raise stays in our conference. Most of that
money is given away to youth groups who re-
quest help with their mission projects for the
year. The other 30% is given to the United Meth-

Second Sunday of September

We believe that we, the youth of the Tennessee

Conference, are the church of today not just “of
the future.” God has given us gifts, ideas, and
talents to lead others in unique ways. We
encourage you to use those gifts to help lead
worship in your local congregation throughout
the year. The CCYM suggests that at least once
a year or more, your youth ministry should take
the lead for the whole worship service. As a

April 17, 2010
As Christians we are called to make a difference in
the world for Jesus Christ. We are called to serve
each other out of that love. Mother Teresa once
said “In this life we cannot do great things. We can
only do small things with great love.” On April 17th,
we encourage you to do “small things with great
love” in your community.

This is not an opportunity like any of the others in

this magazine, this expression of service will be or-
ganized by you in your community. So what are
you being called to do where you live? Who do you
see that needs to be shown “great love”? Inspire your youth group and your church to “BE
THE CHANGE” that is needed in your community to connect all to the love of Jesus Christ.

We want to be a part of celebrating with you after you finish your day
of service. So join us at Franklin First United Methodist in Sanctu-
ary East at 6 p.m. for a special worship celebration. You will be
inspired by incredible music by the RE Worship Band.

Our special guest speaker for the evening will be Shane Claiborne.
During college, one of Shane’s professor remarked, “Being a Chris-
tian is about choosing Jesus and deciding to do something incredibly
daring with your life.” Taking up that challenge, his faith led him to a
life many describe as an “Ordinary Radical.” Shane will share with
us his call to serve the least, the last, and the lost.
When you join us, please bring some canned food to benefit those in
need in Middle Tennessee.

Email Brad at bfiscus@tnumc.org for questions about this ministry opportunity.

A new way of looking at Leadership.

FRESH is an event for youth council members, youth who

serve on church committees, hold other leadership
positions or are potential leaders in their group—in other
words FRESH is for the WHOLE youth group.

We hope to create connections -

With God
With each other
With all parts of the conference
With all parts of the body of Christ
as we determine and discern our own gifts for ministry.
At Fresh, we’ll:
· Spend time learning about the UMC and how youth fit in and have a voice
· Explore our own gifts for ministry
· Elect officers for the conference
· 10 District delegates will be chosen through an application process before the end of
March, these delegates are expected to represent their district at FRESH
· We will elect officers for the district from the 10 delegates in attendance
· Worship and learning together
· Each church will be asked to designate 6 voting delegates, 4 youth and 2 adults, to
represent their group during elections.

Election of the Executive CCYM will take place during this event. Those elected will be: President,
Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Chair of Communications, Conference Representative, and two
Middle School Representatives.

A recommendation letter from your pastor or youth leader is required in order to be considered for
elected leadership. An application form can be downloaded from our website.

Dinner on Saturday night will be with Bishop Wills and the extended cabinet. This has been a
highlight of the event, and an opportunity to meet the Bishop, District Superintendent from your
district, as well as other conference leadership.

The event will be held at Brentwood UMC and our housing will be at a hotel in Brentwood. We will
hold registration and spend Saturday at Brentwood UMC, with time in the afternoon to go to the
hotel, check in and freshen up before dinner.

At Cedar Crest, adventure campers will be housed in rustic cabins.
They will also go offsite to canoe the Buffalo River, camp out in
tents, and conquer a high-element challenge course (with climbing

End your summer with friends from across the Tennessee Conference worshiping God at Beersheba
Springs! Summer Sizzler brings an exciting and spirit-filled finale to the camping season. Again this
year you’ll have an exciting opportunity to spend five days at Beersheba immersed in a worship
environment. By combining Celebration Camp with Summer Sizzler, campers will have the
opportunity to both develop their gifts of worship but also share them during the Celebration Camp
experience as well as at Sizzler. Campers who attend both will participate in worship during the
Sizzler weekend. This event is for graduated 6th—12th graders.

Our Summer Events design team works diligently to create a weekend of activities, worship and fun.
A great Summer Sizzler tradition is the utilization of small groups to facilitate deeper discussions and
deeper understandings of God working in our lives.

Summer Sizzler is filled with traditional games, tournaments, YSF challenges, district meetings and a
cookout.

Quarterly Pastoral Care Workshops

During 2010, the Young People’s Ministry of the

Tennessee Conference will offer quarterly Pastoral Care
workshops for all youth workers. Ministering with young
people is a challenging calling. While our focus is
connecting them to Jesus Christ, the struggles they face in
life become the biggest roadblock to receiving the grace
they so desperately need. These workshops will help the
youth worker develop skills and tools as well as connect
them to resources that will equip them to discern the correct
course necessary to help those in need.

More details will be given at http://tnumcyouth.org about the

upcoming trainings and information will be sent out detailing these training opportunities.

Pastoral Care Workshop #1 - Tennessee Lives Count

Tennessee’s Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Training

This workshop will help youth workers recognize the warning signs of
suicide in youth and young adults, and how to intervene and save a life.

The objective of this workshop is to provide participants with:

- general knowledge of the societal view of suicide,
by addressing myths, facts, attitudes and opinions
- adequate knowledge of the steps that they can follow to
prevent a suicidal person from completing suicide
- resources from which they can refer a suicidal person
once they have intervened and prevented a suicidal attempt.

The workshop will be instructed by certified trainers from the Tennessee Lives Count Project in
partnership with the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. For more information see their
website at www.tspn.org.
