This case is written on one of the biggest strike held in Lahore,


PAKISTAN against unlawful sackings. On 11 March, ad hoc nurses from
different government hospitals in Lahore started a protest, in front of
office of the Punjab Director General Health. They were protesting the
recent dismissal of 2800 nurses.

demanding reinstatement of the sacked nurses, regularization of the


contract and ad hoc jobs and promotion. The government tried to use the classical tactic of divide
and rule to defeat the nurses. They offered to promote some of the nurses from the Young
Nursing Association; a few of the leaders were also offered personal benefits. With the escalation
and broadening of the movement, the government was forced to rehire the 2800 dismissed nurses
on 3 year contracts which will later become permanent. At the same time, the government was
forced to accept a wage increase of Rs. 4000. This all out victory marked the end of the sit in.

held a protest for their demands and staged a sit-in on the road in front of the Punjab Assembly
on The Mall to press the Punjab government and Health Department to regularize their services.

Unlawful Sackings & its consequences


They were protesting the recent dismissal of 2800 nurses. But not only did the Punjab
Government refuse to accept the demands of the nurses, on14 March it deployed the police to
baton charge the protest. In this violent and brutal attack a seven months pregnant nurse was
severely injured and only narrowly escaped death.
The nurses have been staging protest on The Mall where Chief Ministers Adviser on Health
Salman Rafiq, PML-N leader Khawaja Imran, Health DG Dr Zahid Pervaiz, Health Sectary
Babar Hayat and other government officials engaged in negotiations with the protesting nurses,
but failed to convince them to end their protest until the filing of this report. Sources said that
government officials offered the ad hoc nurses that their services would be extended by three
years on a contractual basis, and then they would be regularized after three years.

The purpose of a case study is to provide a more thorough analysis of a situation which will
reveal interesting information to the reader. Its also helps to understand the importance of legal
issues related to the employee, and how one single mistake from the org. can result severe
damage.
This case study is also helps in a great way to improve our learning and training being students.
It provides an opportunity to enhance problem solving skills by applying what we learn in our
class.
