CHAPTER I

Introduction
Background of the Study

Breakfast literally means to break the fast. When you wake up, in the morning, the
body needs fuel to function so it must be supplied with food because it would be more likely
been ten hours since they last ate anything, thus, needs the fueling for the days activities
(Hernando, 1989).
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day however in truth it is also known as the
most neglected meal most often all (The importance of breakfast, 2014). These meals are often
the most people skipped in their daily lifebreakfast is becoming more of a fast break, which
consists of either a cup of coffee, a piece of bread, a spoonful of champorado, or a glass of plain
water.Especially in our rapidly changing world where it is the age of computer systems.
Technology can be great in helping us improve humankind but then again as they lived in this
world, people often think of themselves as computers also. The fast pace lifestyle of the
computer speed thus forgetting that are only human and not machines that are capable doing in
seconds.
There was a saying, Breakfast is the most important meal of the day has been spoken
by countless moms throughout the ages. It has been whispered in the ears of students on early-torise mornings for centuries, yet the depth of understanding as to why breakfast is so important
has only been brought to light in recent years. The side effects of not eating breakfast negatively
impact weight, hormonal health, memory, cognition and mood. Skipping breakfast is like
depriving of the body adequate nutrition. [Diates.org] reports that breakfast skippers tend to be

deficient in minerals such as calcium, in addition to not getting enough fruits and vegetables that
provide important vitamins and also the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
confirms this by citing studies showing students who eat breakfast get more important nutrients,
vitamins and minerals than those who don't eat in the morning. According to Arthritis Today
online, there are other problems with skipping breakfast, including a risk of developing high
levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol implicated in heart disease. The
website also reports studies that find a higher level of resistance to insulin in individuals who
consistently miss the morning meal (Topness, n.d).
Does it make a difference when one gets a fast break or a good morning meala
breakfast? Research shows that children who eat good breakfast do better in school, are more
alert, have more energy to think and easily to get along with, and hence, have fewer disciplinary
problems than children who either skip or get scanty breakfast. Likewise, adults who get
adequate breakfast have sweeter disposition, are more efficient and are less prone to accidents.
Research also shows that skipping breakfast is not a plus factor advantage to weight control;
rather, it is a barrier. Breakfast skippers tend to eat between meals and consume more calories.
On the other hand, a good morning meal is recommended for an effective weight management
program.
There are many reason why people do not eat breakfast in the research of Cara Long and
Barbara Mulla they had use two theories to predict the reason first the theory of planned behavior
and second the Health Action Process. The Health Action Process (HAPA) suggests that the
adoption, initiation, and maintenance of health behaviors must be explicitly conceived as a
process that consists of at least a motivation phase and a volition phase =. The latter might
further subdivided into a planning phase, action phase, and maintenance phase. It is claimed that

perceived self efficacy plays a crucial role at all stages along with other cognitive. (Bandura,
1997)

The Theory of Planned Behavior was formulated by Ajzen and Fishbein in the 1980. This theory
suggest that a persons behavior is determined by his/her intention to perform the behavior and
that this intention, is in turn a function of his/her attitude towards the behavior and his/her
subjective norm. The best predictor of behavior is intention. Intention is the cognitive
representation of a persons readiness to perform a given behavior, and it is considered to be
immediate antecedent of behavior. (Ajzen, 1985)

This study was to determine the prevalence and negative effects of skipping breakfast and
factors associated with skipping breakfast among nursing students, and to assist in the design of
interventions to improve breakfast consumption habits of college students.
This study will examine the breakfast eating habits of thenursing students, to determine if
eating breakfast had a negative effect upon their grade on their classes. This study aims to
determine the causes and effects of skipping breakfast among the nursing students of Ateneode
Zamboanga University.
Significance of the Study
As a group we want to study this because there are many misconceptions about skipping
breakfast people think that some of obese people skip breakfast and to succeed in weight loss,
never skip breakfast. Although when thinking of how to lose weight skipping breakfast comes to
mind there are others who believe that the healthy breakfast is the way to go.
Breakfast is the standstill most important meal of the day. However, people are starting to
think about the benefits of skipping breakfast. In this breakfast, they will compare skipping
breakfast with eating in the morning discussing the pros and cons that they need to know before
deciding whether or not to skip breakfast for them.

Finally, skipping breakfast is a diet where they don't eat breakfast accompanied by proper
hydration. Not eating breakfast increases risk of hypoglycemia or low-blood sugar. This
condition can bring on physical symptoms such as shakiness, dizziness, weakness, and
headaches. In fact, many schools open early to serve breakfast for students who may not be
served this important meal at home for whatever reason. Skipping breakfast lead negatively
impacts a students ability to effectively problem-solve. Students, who consumed breakfast tested
higher in standardized test scores, were absent less from school and were more on time to class.
Statements of the problem
The main objective of this study is to determine the negatives effects of skipping breakfast
among the Ateneo Nursing Students. Furthermore, this study attempts to know and understand
their reasons regarding of skipping the breakfast.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What are the common causes of skipping breakfast among the nursing students in
AdZU?
2. What are thenegative effects of skipping breakfast among the Nursing students in
AdZU?
a. Physical
b. Mental

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

Pros and cons. The advantages and disadvantages; the favorable and the unfavorable
factors. This study needs information to be able to prevent the risk factor of imbalance of the
