Design-I

The study of this subject will begin with understanding the visual and aesthetic qualities of
composition in two and three dimensions and relating these to Architectural design situation.
1) Introduction to elements of Design like point, line, plane, solid and void etc. with respect to
their expression quality.
2) Introduction and Importance of Design principles like Balance, Harmony, Rhythm, Contrast,
Symmetry, Scale, Proportions etc. leading to unity in design.
.
3) Creation of two and three-dimensional composition of abstract and architectural nature.
4) Introduction to external and internal form concept, their quality, concept of space, relation of
Space and volume.
The study of the subject will continue further with the introduction of process of Architectural
Design with emphasis on conceptual quality, functional aspect and aesthetic appeal.
a) Generation of activity, ergonometric study, arrangement of furniture, resultant area/shape for
the design consideration.
b) Concept of simple circulation pattern, placement of activity area pattern, placement of activity
areas on such pattern, evolution of plan form, concept of volume and spaces, resultant form,
its aesthetic and functional quality.
c) Visual and graphical presentation techniques to express in terms of plan, elevation and
section with elementary understanding of structure and materials used.
Sessional work:
Design of individual activity spaces from residence, office, school, club cafeteria etc.
Form oriented simple Building like towers, gates, monuments, sculptures, booths etc.
Design of simple small buildings like Residence, dispensary, library, office primary school etc.

Construction -I

Objective of learning this subject in progression, starting from simple building elements to
more complex situations, is to develop. Emphasis should be on reasoning and analysis while
acquainting the students with different building elements. The aim is to build a strong sense of
visualization to enable students to evolve and apply alternative materials and methods of construction.
Unit-1: Foundation : General introduction to various elements of building from foundation to roof.
Simple foundations for load bearing walls in stone and brick. Plinth filling, steps and
timbering to trenches.
Unit-2: Masonry : Standard terms in brick and stone masonry, English and Flemish bond, piers,
types of stone walls, composite and curved walls, lintels and arches, copings etc.
Unit-3: Doors and Windows : Paneled door in timber, joints in frame, styles, rails, panels,
Moldings, fixtures and fastenings. Fully glazed window in timber, fixing of glass, doubleglazing, fixtures and fastenings.
Unit-4: Structure Type: General idea of load transmission, Load bearing and framed
structures, their advantages, disadvantages and suitability.
Unit-5; Timber Roofs: General idea of various forms in timber for different spans.
General information of timber trusses, fixing of Mangalore tiles etc. (question
to be based on notes and sketches only )
Unit-6; Timber floors: General idea of timber floors in relation to spans, load
transmission. Jack arch and composite floors.
Sessional Work: Plates, notes, site visit reports and market surveys and tests.

Graphics I

1. Study of scales, their use in practice and construction of Plain and Diagonal scale.
2. Architectural and stencil lettering in varying heights and thickness.

Unit-2: 0rthographic Projections:
Study of reference planes, projectors, orthographic projections of object/objects in different

Co-planar Statics:
Axioms of statics & Basic concepts, law of forces, equilibrium of forces, forces on a rigid
body & reactions, resultant and resolution of forces (concurrent, parallel and non-concurrent),
free body diagram, conditions of equilibrium, supports - types and reactions.

Friction:
Laws of static friction, application to inclined planes & ladder.

Properties of Areas:
First and Second moment of area about an axis in plane. Radius of gyration about an axis,
parallel axis theorem, centroid of areas.

Section B

Pin Jointed Perfect Frames:


Solution by method of joints and method of section.

Graphic Statics:
Force polygon and funicular polygon for coplanar forces. Conditions of equilibrium,
reactions at supports of simply supported beams and trusses, centroid of planar bodies, simple
trusses - Maxwell diagrams.

Cables:
Weightless flexible cables under concentrated loads and uniformly distributed load with level
& non-level supports.

The object of studying the subject is to make the students aware of sources general-idea of
manufacture and production of large variety of building materials. Emphasis will be given on the
evaluation of the chemical and physical properties, aesthetic qualities and appropriate use of such
materials.
Unit-1: Stone: Classification of good building stone, natural bed of stone, deterioration of stone etc,
Common building stones found in India, its selection, preservation, dressing, artificial stone, stone
products etc.
Unit-2: Bricks: Classification, general idea of its manufacturing process, firebricks, different forms
of bricks etc.
Unit-3:Tiles: Different types of tiles, general idea of manufacturing of Portland cement tiles, glazing
earthenware, stone ware, porcelain, Terracotta..
Unit-4: Lime: Classification, setting action of lime, brief idea of manufacturing of lime, preparation

Unit-5: Cement: Composition, general idea of manufacturing process, testing methods, different

its importance. It further aims at developing the freehand drawing and rendering skills in different
medium and using it as tool for expressing ideas-visually.

Types of timber and their identification, detection of faults and uses of Timber.-Carpenter's tools used
for sawing, Planning, shaping, etc. Making of selected joints, polishing, etc.
Unit-2: Fitting:
Names and uses of different kinds of tools used for cutting, drilling. Grinding, slotting, shaping,
bending and measuring instruments, care and maintenance practices in chipping, filing, scraping and
fitting etc.

Demonstration and practice lessons on soldering, brazing, forging, gas arid arc welding.

General study of measure for safety and precautions to be taken to prevent accidents in workshop.

Design II and III

The study of design shall continue with further progress and complexity in aesthetic qualities but with
more emphasis on architectural and functional aspects like
a) Complexity in circulation- and pattern of horizontals as well as vertical movement.
b) Integration in terms of facilitation, planform, volume, concept and space organization.
c) Application of basic building materials to evolve a design with their aesthetic appeal, functional
quality and elementary structural concepts to evolve specific form.
d) Climatic consideration for the design, orientation of building on site, simple concepts of sun
shading devices, their application in elevations as functional / aesthetic solutions.
Sessional work : Exercise on one or few aspects at a time followed by at least two design problems
arranged in sequence leading to more and more complexity.

In this part more emphasis is given on Indian History of Architecture in continuation with the last
semester, the study of-Hindu and Buddhist Architecture proceeds farther in the study of influence of
Islam. This study shall be carried out in region/century pattern-to acquaint students with Indian
Architecture-under the influence of Islam with reference to changing religious, political, climatic
conditions with new construction materials.
Unit 1 : 11th Century AD. Architectural forms conceived by Qutub Dynasties at Delhi.
Unit 2 :
Development of regional styles noticed in various provinces such as Bengal, Jaunpur,
Gujrat and Central India.
Unit-3: Development of Architecture under peculiar regional, climatic, physical, politico-social
conditions. Influence of Hindu, Buddhist, and Persian Architecture with use of Local materials and
craftsmanship. Study of construction methods and evolution of building forms.
Unit 4: Architecture under Mughals - Humayun, Akbar, and Shahjahan.
Unit-5: Architecture of south India under Vijaynagar dynasty and Madurai complex Revival Hindu
Architecture.
Unit-6: British and Portuguese Colonial Architecture and Palaces of Rajasthan.

Study of this subject is aimed at acquainting the students with the phenomenon of weather and
climate, earth sun relationship, thermal cormfort indices etc.

This part of the subject provides a scope to apply the knowledge of-basic climatology gained earlier
for designing in different climatic conditions.
Unit-I: Study of climatic elements prevailing in tropical and sub tropical zone and study of
traditional/vernacular architecture in relation with the climate types.
Unit-2: Understanding climatic data, its analysis and method of presentation.
Unit.3: Study of passive cooling techniques and techniques of solar radiation control.
Unit.4: Study of effect of orientation, topography, vegetation, form, building materials and surfaces
on the building design in response to the climate.

and their applications.
Unit-3: Use of Computer as a tool for imagination and design. Using Paintbrush, Coral draw, 3-D
Home etc.
Unit-4: Introduction to computer aided drawing, various softwares used such as AutoCAD,
AutoArchitect, Intergraph, Form Z, Graphisoft, 3-D Studio,etc.
Unit-5: Basics of 2-D drafting, Drawing simple objects, projections and plans etc,

The study of this subject will continue further with-greater emphasis on functional aspects involved
in complex
design situations. The main objective is to understand effect of climate, topography and services on
the buildings,
to understand relationship between form and function of buildings, The design process to deal with

Functional organization of activities with respect to site, its topography and surroundings.
Development control rules, building byelaws and standard codes
Functioning of building services like drainage, water supply and electricity
Form to suit the purpose of building.

Session at work: Study of the above aspects in the form of book study, case study etc. followed by a
relevant design problem. Minimum two major design problems and two short/time problems to be
tackled in each-semester.

Details of Practical Training:

(1) The Practical Training of six months duration (under a Registered Architect only) envisages
the following varied experience in order to ensure exposure of a student to various tasks.
a) Office experience in respect of preparation of working drawing, detailing drawings of
perspective, preparation of architectural models, study of filing systems of
documents, drawings, ammonia prints and preparation of tender document.
b) Site experience, in respect of supervision of the construction activity, Observation,
layout on site, study of the staking methods of various building, materials, taking the
measurement and recording.
(2) Student will have to maintain a weekly record of their engagement for the period of training.
This will be recorded in an authorized log-book to be counter-signed by architect at the end
of each month.
(3) At the end of the training period, student will have to procure a certificate of training and
satisfactory performance from the concerned office in the prescribed form.
(4) Certificate of satisfactory completion of training same shall be submitted to the principal of
the College, immediately after training, through Head of Architecture Department along with
the report and drawings made during the training period and appear for Viva-voce at a
prescribed date by the university.

Project

Every student shall select a subject for Research project of an Architectural interest,
Experimental work, dissertation or a combination. The nature of the problem shall be based on the
synthesis of their total experience and knowledge gained from the allied subjects. Emphasis, shall be
laid on the approach to the design solution rather than the end-result. The subject of the project shall
be approved by the Department at the commencement of the term.
The students shall have to give at least one seminar on their subject.
On the prescribed data students have to submit to department a bound report of the project, containing
identification of the problem scope of the work, data collection, case studies, analytical studies, and
its application to the final design solution. On the date prescribed by the Nagpur University, final and
