Romanwalls
Inthe secondcentury,Tarracowasgivenalargewallthatenclosedthe
city limits. Its
lengthwasabout3,500meters.1,100metersofthem
are preserved today, surrounding
theOldTown.Themostinteresting part to visit is the Archaeological Walk, where you can
seevarious locks100%preserved,showingparticularsocketmegalithicblocks,
as well
astwoofthesixportholesandabeautifulgatewayfor traffic.

ProvincialForum
TheareaoftheProvincial Forumis18ha,anditwasbuiltstartingfrom73AD,byorderof
EmperorVespasian,andremainedinuseuntilthe5thcentury.Itis
the
largest
monumentofitskindintheentireRomanworld.Forum provincial structured in two places
atdifferentheights.

Circus
The RomancircusispartoftheProvincialForumanditisoneofthe bestpreservedcircus
inalltheWesternworld,despitethefact that much of the structure remains hidden under
19thcentury buildings.Currently,theeasternsidecanbevisited,includingthe
decorativefaadeandstands,aswellastheSantHermenegildand
Carrer
Enrajolat
vaults.AnothersectionhasbeenuncoveredinPlaa
Sedassos, and several vaults can
stillbevisitedalongCarrer TrinquetVellandinPlaadelaFont.

Amphiteatre
The mainuseoftheamphitheatrewastoentertainthetown,including
fights
betweenwildbeastsandgladiatorsaswellaspublic
executions. The Amphiteatre was
builtattheturnofthe2ndcentury A.D. and it was modified in 221 A.D. Today, a heavily
erodedsection
ofthestandscarveddirectlyintotheremainingrocks,asdoesa section
ofthesouthernstands,supportedbyconcretevaults.To commemorate the event,a Visigoth
basilicawasbuiltonthesiteat
the turn of the 7th century, over which the medieval
churchofSanta
MariadelMiraclewassubsequentlyestablished.

NationalArcheologicalMuseum
TheNational Archeological Museum was founded in the 19th century, andit was built after
themixofthesetwo:theMonumentCommitteeMuseumand
the
Tarragona

ArchaeologicalSocietyMuseum.Youcanfindthis
Museum in todays central Plaa
delReiinTarragona,whereyou
will be able to see some Romanruins, including several
fascinating architecturalfragments,sculptures,inscriptions,mosaics,potter and
other
Romangadgets.Ifyougotothebasement,youwillgetaview of part of the original ancient
Romanwall.

Aqueduct
Tarraco,
asacity,neededwatersupplyforthetown,sotheybuilttwolong
aqueductsinthe1stcenturyA.D.Thefirstonewas40kmlongand
was fed by the Gai
River.TheFrancolRiverfedthesecondone,
which was also 15 km long. This one has
theniceststretchabove
all:217meterssegmentthatstands26meterstallatitshighest
point.ThispointisknownasthePontdelDiable(Devil'sBridge) or"LesFerreres"Aqueduct.
