This replaces the previous Welcome Letter that was used by teachers to welcome students

into their course at the start of the academic year. It still explains what to expect for your
subject over the academic year but in a more concise form. This template shall outline
the type of content we think will be useful for your document. Do feel free to adapt and add
to make it more relevant to your subject.

As usual, please ensure that your respective course profiles are checked for spelling and grammar
before they are posted on your respective Schoology course. Each of the

Schoology courses you teach should have a course profile posted before the First
Day of School.

SCHEDULE

Homework Days

Monday, approximately 1 hour of homework per week (submission on Thursday). Thursday,


approximately 1 hour of homework per week (submission on Monday).

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

i. Topics to be covered this year

Semester One

What is Biology?

This chapter provides an introduction to scientific investigations, methods,


observations, and communication.
The Chemistry of Life

This chapter covers matter, the significance of carbon, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, amino
acids, biochemical, and chemical properties and reactions.

Cellular Structure and Function

This chapter introduces cell structure and function, features of prokaryotic,


eukaryotic, plant, and animal cells. General structures and functions of DNA, RNA,
protein, cell transport, and homeostasis.
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

This chapter introduces energy, glucose and ATPs role, stages of photosynthesis,

light reactions, the Calvin cycle, cellular respiration, glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, the electron
transport chain, anaerobic and aerobic respiration, and fermentation.

Semester Two

The Cell Cycle, Mitosis, and Meiosis

This chapter covers cell division, the process of producing new cells, and sexual
and asexual reproduction.
Gregor Mendel and Genetics

This chapter covers Mendelian genetics, inheritance, probability, dominant,


recessive, and sexlinked traits.
Molecular Genetics: From DNA to Proteins

This chapter covers DNA, RNA, protein synthesis, mutation, and regulation of gene
expression.
Human Genetics and Biotechnology

This chapter covers the human genome and genetic diseases/disorders, including
autosomal vs. sexlinked inheritance patterns, DNA technology, The Human Genome
Project, and gene cloning.

Assessment & Grading

10% Punctual submission of assignments

10% Group Projects: One per semester

20% Topic Tests : After each topic (except for Chapter 1: What is Biology?). This may come
in any form. (Only top four test scores will be counted).
60% Semester Examinations: Midyear and Final.

Grading Scale A: 80 and above B: 70 to <80 C: 60 to <70 C: 50 to <60 D: <50
