Description
Students do two note-taking exercises which encourage them to skim read a text and extract
relevant information as well as raise awareness of distractors and use of paraphrase. They
then do a Part 7 task, followed by a right/wrong exercise on information and advice on this
part of the test.
Time required:
30 minutes

Aims:
Procedure
1. Explain that you are going to practise looking for specific information in a text. Ask
students when they do this in their own language (e.g. reading an advertisement for
details of a product or event, reading TV listings to find a particular programme,
reading a company website to find details of its products).
2. Ask students what information they would want to know if they were interested in
attending a conference (e.g. where it is to be held, when, how much it costs, whether
somewhere to stay is included, when it needs to be booked).
3. Tell students you are going to give them a worksheet where theyll need to look for
specific information. Give each student a copy of the Students Worksheet.
4. Ask students to look at Exercise 1, and to write down the answers to questions 1-3.
Elicit the answers [see Key to Students Worksheet]. Ask for other examples of
venues, e.g. venues for a football match [a stadium or football ground]; venues for a
trade fair [an exhibition centre, trade fair centre, exhibition centre]; ask what public
venues they know that can be hired for events (e.g. halls or hotel rooms in their home
town). Draw attention to the spelling of accommodation: double c and double m, but
very often spelt wrongly by native English speakers.
5. Ask which word in the bullet points means a piece of paper advertising something
[leaflet]. Ask them to read the leaflet and then complete the notes (questions 4-10).
6. Check the answers [see Key to Students Worksheet], then ask these questions
about how they did this task:
Did you use words from the leaflet, or different words, to answer the questions?
[words from the leaflet]
Were the words in the questions always the same as those in the leaflet? [No, they
are often different e.g. booking in question 10, and reserve a place in the text.]

7. Ask students what information they would want if they were thinking of applying for a
job [e.g. employers name, where the job is based, what qualifications and
experience are required, the salary].
8. Ask students to read Exercise 2, then elicit the answers to 1-5. Ask students to write
down the answers. [See Key to Students Worksheet]
9. Ask students, working in pairs, to complete the notes (questions 6-12).
10. Check the answers [see Key to Students Worksheet], then ask these questions
about how they did this task:
Did you use words from the advertisement, or different words, to answer the
questions? [words from the advertisement]
Were the words in the questions always the same as those in the advertisement?
[No, they are often different e.g. starting in question 10; beginning in the
advertisement.
Why is it important to read the advertisement carefully? [Sometimes there are two
pieces of information and you need to work out which is correct e.g. there are two
places, two salaries, two lengths of time.]
11. Ask if students know what a Press Officer does [they work for a company and keep in
contact with newspapers, radio, TV and any other media, to provide them with
information about the company and to talk to them if the company has problems].
12. Ask students to look at Exercise 3, and elicit how it is different from Exercises 1 and
2 [there are two texts: part of a letter, and an email, rather than just one]. Tell them
this is a BEC Preliminary Reading Part 7 task. Tell them to read both texts first, to
understand what the situation is. Remind them to use only words from the two texts,
and ask them to spend 5-10 minutes doing the exercise individually.
13. Check the answers [see Key to Students Worksheet].
14. Explain that Exercise 4 gives useful information and advice about Part 7. Ask
students, in pairs, to decide which sentence is correct for each question.
15. Check the answers [see Key to Students Worksheet]. Ask them to read the bullet
points giving advice.
16. Ask about their experience of filling in forms, in English or their own language, e.g.
what may make it difficult, whether they ever make mistakes, if its easier when its on
paper or online.

2. Give students texts containing factual information, e.g. advertisements for events or
products, and ask them to write questions for each other like the questions in
exercises 1 and 2 of the Students Worksheet.
3. See the preparation ideas in the BEC handbook, pages 10 (Reading, general) and 11
(Part 7), and in Examination Reports on past papers.

Could you please fill in a refund form for this client? Note that the booking reference number
is actually 01/3434/A. It was a company booking for a Business Class (not First Class)
UATAIR flight from Heathrow. They paid by credit card but its easier if we send them a
cheque for 525.00.

is correct, A or B?
A: The answers you write should be different from words or numbers in the texts.
B: The answers you write should be the same as words in the texts.
A: The words you write should be spelled the same as in the texts.
B: It doesnt matter how you spell the words you write.
A: The answers come in the same order as the information in the texts.
B: The answers dont come in the same order as the information in the texts.
10

Alternative ways of writing dates are accepted, but youre less likely to make a mistake
if you copy from the text.

Insurance claim
Could you deal with this? Its our insurance claim, for the damage at the weekend. The
insurance policy is in my name, and we bought the carpet for 300, although it will cost at
least 500 to replace. Luckily our office carpets seem fine.
Thanks.
