Welcome to the City of Becker

On behalf of our City Staff and residents, I would like to welcome you to the City of Becker.
Becker is Minnesota's "energy city". The XCEL Energy/SHERCO Power Plant is located here and it provides
power for over 2 million homes in the state of Minnesota.
Becker, which has proudly been proclaimed a Yellow Ribbon Community, is located 20 miles east of St. Cloud
on Hwy 10, we are 15 minutes from Interstate 94 and approximately 45 miles from Minneapolis. Commuting to
the Metro area is made easier by using the North Star Line Commuter Rail. There is a North Star Link Coach Bus
pick-up located in Becker, which takes you east to the North Star Rail stop in Big Lake, or you can ride the North Star
Link west to St Cloud as well.
We are proud of our excellent school system and facilities. We have recently completed the construction of a 900 seat auditorium
and a new regulation size swimming pool and look forward to hosting many events in both areas. We offer top notch academics and
plenty of activities for students of all ages. Come check out our "Bulldog Pride"!
Another recent addition to our city is the Becker Area Senior Center, which is currently located at City Hall. This fun group of
seniors meets ever Tuesday and Thursday. They keep themselves quite busy and even find time to mentor some of our youth.
Becker loves it's parks and trails. Our city park has a disc golf course, sliding hill, picnic area and a year round enclosed pavilion
for events of all kinds. We have 9 residential parks along with walking trails, horseback riding trails, cross country ski trails, hockey
and skating rinks. Our community center has a pool with slides, exercise area, racquetball courts, gym, meeting rooms and library.
Becker is home to Pebble Creek Golf Course - a premier 27 hole public course. Pebble Creek hosts the Minnesota State High
School League Tournament. The golf course would love to host your private event - call for available dates.
Becker values the many businesses that serve the needs of our residents, and our Industrial Park is "shovel ready" for expansion.
We have the lowest city tax rate in the area - contact us for your expansion/relocation needs.
We look forward to sharing our many amenities with you.
Sincerely,
Jerome (Lefty) Kleis

Mayor of Becker

Making a stronger community

We proudly bring to you the 2015-16
Becker Area Community Guide.
Within these pages are stories on
Becker businesses and organizations, activities, along with directories on who to contact, whatever your question may be.
The Guides primary purpose is to inform our new residents, and confirm within
those here for a longer time, that there are
lots of businesses and organizations to serve
you - and be served by you.
How does this work?
We make things better by being
stronger individuals within our community.
We find the time to dedicate more energy
and resources to join organizations and help

those more in need.

We also begin our shopping lists by determining all the things we can buy locally.
No community can grow and be strong
without their residents realizing the importance of supporting local merchants.
Thank you to the large number of area
merchants and organizations for their participation in this Community Guide.
Best wishes for continued success to
the Becker Chamber of Commerce, which
this week is sponsoring its headline event,
the Becker Community Expo.
And sincere thanks to the people at
Becker City Hall who are helping greatly to
support this Community Guide.

Were proud to be part of the Becker

business community. Our Citizen newspaper weekly chronicles the events of the
community. There is no better way to learn
of Becker than reporting and promoting it.
You do too, every day to take part in a
positive activity. Thank you.

Parks And Recreation
Making Life Better In Becker
Submitted by
Jamie Cassidy,
Director of
Parks
and
Recreation

Across
the nation,
parks and
recreation
plays a key
role in fostering a better quality
of life for communities. By providing the following benefits
and enhancements for its residents, parks and recreation has
a direct impact on making life
better for the people and families of Becker.
Key areas of impact include:
The provision of recreational experiences, promotion of health
and wellness, strengthening com-

munity image and sense of place,

protecting natural resources, fostering human development, bolstering safety and security,
supporting economic development, encouraging healthy
lifestyles, service to community,
leadership towards universal accessibility, personal development, environmental stewardship
and access to the serenity and inspiration of nature.
In Becker, our parks, trails
and facilities positively exhibit
and portray these traits and
more, especially the areas of
promoting healthy lifestyles and
community-wellness, providing
space for active living and play,
strengthening families and preserving open space for future
generations. Our well-estab-

Trails
The City of Becker has
more than thirty miles of trails
and sidewalks throughout the
city. We continue to look for
ways to improve trail connection throughout the entire city,

statewide health improvement
grant dollars to create an updated Trail and Sidewalk Plan.
Open Space
There are several open
space areas in the north part of
the city. City Park offers open
space and a wide range of passive recreation opportunities
such as picnicking, hiking,
cross-country skiing, etc. The
Sherburne County Oak Savanna
and Pebble Creek Golf Course
are public open space areas.
The city also owns 80 acres of
land north of the city and east of
County Road 67.
Xcel Energy owns a large
amount of open space land
along the Mississippi River.
Much of this land serves as
buffer space and protection
zones for their electrical generating plants. They allow some
recreation use of their property
by permit (such as bow hunting
and hiking) in designated areas.
Park Planning
In 2013, an update to our
comprehensive plan was approved. The plan serves as a
long-range planning tool for the
community. Included in this
document is a section on parks
and recreation. Our goal is to
effectively manage our parks
system so that it grows with the
community and meets demand
as they occur, through well
thought-out planning and preparation. Future parks, amenities,
trails and park improvements
are encased into the overall
plan.
The City of Becker is well
served, not only by the aforementioned parks system, but
also by way of a wide range of
recreation facilities such as the
Becker Community Center,
Kolbinger Park Building, City
Park Building and 18-hole Disc
Golf Course and the 30 acre
Becker Athletic Complex. With
the parks and facilities as a base,
Becker has an excellent range of
recreation offerings.
The Becker Community
Center:

Making Lives Better

The BCC has an indoor
swimming pool, rock climbing
wall, fitness room, meetings
rooms, a library, kitchen facilities and community room.
Built in 1994, it is 44,000
square feet, houses the Becker
Library and plays host to more
than thirty different community
meeting groups annually. Currently, the BCC has more than
650 memberships and over

2500 actual members.

In addition to BCC membership and our fitness room,
we also offer more than fifty
recreation programs, activities
and events each year, including
popular activities Breakfast
with Santa, Tree Lighting,
Bunny Brunch, Memorial Day
Luncheon, Senior Grad Party,
etc.
The BCC strives to deliver
meaningful recreational experi-

ences for our customers that

will make an indelible impact
on their lives.
Freedom Days And
Community Events
The City of Becker has a
long history of holding formal
community-wide gatherings, including the Memorial Day Auto
Economy Run in May of 1953,
Strawberry Festival from 19661971, Becker Bicentennial

Celebration in 1976, Becker Pioneer Days in 1979 & 1980,
Octoberfest in 1987 and 1988, and Becker Freedom Days from
1988 to the present. Recently, we have also added the October
Harvest Fest as an annual event. These events provide a unique
opportunity to bring residents together for fun and celebration, to
build our community and to preserve our city and national heritage.
Summary
The role of Becker Parks and Becker Community Center is
to provide programs, facilities and opportunities to enhance the
quality of life within the City of Becker. We embrace this mission
because we know there are a myriad of different benefits that can
be accrued from participation in recreation activities or visits to
parks and open space.
It can be a walk in the woods of City Park for a world-weary
adult. It can be the sense of exhilaration for the six year old that
connects bat-to-ball for the very first time in a BCC Instructional
Sports Class. It can be the positive feeling of energy that fitness
participants feel after a workout. Or it might be that intangible
sense of connection people feel when gathered with others enjoying special events.
We can relax and enjoy the beauty of our parks and trails. We
can spend time with family or friends. We can experience new activities and opportunities. There are an almost limitless number
of ways that parks and recreation can make our lives and our community better now and in the future.
Anyone interested in learning more about the Becker Parks
and Recreation Department, our parks and trails system or the

Steady progress for Becker Schools
Text and photo by
David Hannula, Staff Writer
Becker Supt. Dr. Stephen
Malone sees a period of slow
and steady growth ahead for
the Becker School District in
the immediate future, coupled
with the completion of renovations and improvements to the
physical campus that have come
on-line at the start of the school
year.
The new Performing Arts
Center and Aquatic Center are
the most visible improvements
at present, but the project has
also included renovations to air
quality, heating and cooling,
new tennis courts and a new
lighted soccer field, as well as a
renovated gymnasium, lighting

and safety equipment, roof

maintenance and more efficient
windows were all part of the
project approved by voters in
2012, Malone said.
He also notes an enhanced
sense of Bulldog Pride in the
atmosphere, with student success stories like the state championship won by the football
team this year, and the on-going
success of programs like the robotics team and the successful
debut of the musical theatre program in the new PAC. Renovated and expanded parking
areas and a new series of signs
and information kiosks are other
visible signs of progress visitors
will see as they attend sporting
events and performances in the
district buildings going forward.

Technology also plays a

role in this new attitude, with
Becker High School being
named one of eight schools in
the state to have the Apple Distinguished School title. This
distinction allows BHS to host
regional conferences with representatives from Apple Inc.,
the most recent of which this
year included representatives
from schools across Minnesota
and from as far afield as North
Dakota.
With around 300 open enrollment students currently on
campus, Malone expects to see
a steady increase of around one
per cent in the student body in
the coming years. The curriculum is sufficiently broad at this
point, he said, with many stu-

dents enrolled in courses at St.

Cloud State University expected
to continue.
Staff development, stakeholder input and an ever increasing use of technology in
the classroom are also part of
the long-term planning underway in the district, with a total
K-12 issuance of iPads throughout the district planned for the
coming school year.

Renovations complete Becker School Board

at Becker schools
By David Hannula,
Staff Writer
With the completion of the
new performing arts center and
the new aquatic facility, major
renovations at the Becker High
School were all but completed
by the end of 2014. Area residents were given studentguided tours of both sites
earlier this fall as the school
year began, and both have been
in general use ever since.
The multi-phase construction and renovation program
for district schools has remained on schedule and under
budget
throughout
the
process, according to regular
reports presented at the Becker
Board of Education regular
meeting throughout the construction process. Ground was
broken in July of 2013 for the
construction phase of the project, with Gohman Construction
Co. being the successful bidder
with an offer of $12,074,575.
The projects represent the final
phase of the construction approved by district voters in
2012, according to Supt. Dr.
Stephen Malone.
Performing Arts Center
The performing arts center
has been in constant use since
the school year began, and has
hosted a number of band and
choir concerts, special events,
and the musical theatre production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway classic
Cinderella in December.
The facilities has more
than 900 seats and playgoers
were amazed at the scope and
design of the tiered seating and
the high-vaulted ceiling in the
facility, which boasts excellent
sight lines for patrons, as well
as outstanding acoustics from
the stage and a deep, resonant
orchestra pit out front.
State-of-the-art computer
controls handle the sound and

lighting needs for any production in the facility, which also

boasts a professional-style
fly system in which
weighted ropes and pulleys are
used to move backdrops and
heavy set pieces on and off of
the stage, an ability which was
showcased many times during
the recent musical.
The uses the facility may
be put in the future have not
even been tapped into yet,
Malone said. Those may include rental of the center to
outside businesses and organizations for meetings and presentations, touring musical or
theatrical productions that may
wish to put on performances in
the area.
Aquatic Center
The new aquatic center at
BHS includes two sections,
with a diving board on one end
of the complex and an open
pool with lanes for competition
swimming on the other side,
and an extensive series of risers on both sides to accommodate spectators.
BHS was able to host
home swim meets this fall for
the first time in many years,
since the older pool in the high
school was too shallow to
allow swimmers to dive into it
to begin lap races.
Other Projects
The renovations included
work on other buildings, such
as roof repairs at the Intermediate School, and a new boiler
system at the Middle School.
All district schools have also
benefitted from projects to
bring air quality up to statemandated levels, as well as
new windows and other energy-efficient programs.
Parking lots have been
renovated with an additional
287 stalls added, along with a
new lighted soccer field and
new tennis courts to complete
the program.

A new world at Becker High School

Observing the new developments to the infrastructure combined with student success in a
number of areas, Becker High

watch her school grow because
of them.

She was referring to the recent completion of the Performing Arts Center along and the
new Aquatic Center, as well as
Beckers recent success in winning the state title in football, as
well as the on-going success of
the school robotics team, taking
first and second-place in state
competition in the two previous
years. The fall production of the
musical Cinderella was also a
great success, Logrono said,
which also highlighted the stateof-the-art nature of the PAC and
the large numbers of students
who take part in school productions.
She also pointed out the
close connection between the
community, the school and local
industry, with mentors from
Xcel Energy and Liberty Paper
working closely with the robotics team from the outset, and the
internship program Xcel Sherco
provides for two BHS students
each summer.
The National Honor Society
and student government are also
bright spots in the school year,
Logrono said, with the NHS involved in many service projects
in the community. Becker will

also host the state NHS convention this year, with between 400
and 500 students attending the
three-day program in the spring.
Academically, the school is
focusing on the Four Cs,
which are: Creativity, Collaboration, Communication and Critical Thinking, all of which are
vital for turning out the self-directed learners that are prepared
for college and career readiness
upon graduation. In that regard,
2014-15 will see all juniors taking the ACT test for the first time
at BHS.
Students at the school already have the opportunity to
take college-level classes,
Logrono said, and the use of
technology in teaching will continue to evolve, at a pace so rapid
that it is difficult to predict exactly where the schools will be
in even the next two years.
However technology changes
the core curriculum will not
change as a response, Logrono
said. The goal is to provide students with the chance to excel as
much as possible, while giving
them the core skills needed to
succeed well beyond Becker
High School.

BECKER INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

Multiple goals for Intermediate school

Text and photo by David Hannula, Staff Writer

Dr. Christine Glomski

Becker
Intermediate School
Principal

Literacy and professional development will be

two major focus areas at the Becker Intermediate
School (BIS) in the coming two years, according to
Principal Dr. Christine Glomski. Finding the academic best practice approach to teaching reading
and comprehension will drive efforts to ensure that
test scores continue to remain high, and that the
achievement gap for students is closed in the
process.
Programs such as One Book, One School that
encourage families to read the same book together
have inspired a real sense of community, Glomski
said, and there has already been a real shift in the students in her school coming to class ready to learn.
Technology is helping to drive this as well as more
focus on reading, with computer technology now allowing teachers to show students how to do research

on their own, and to be able to select credible sources

from the jumble of information on the Internet.
Another focus area will be multi-tiered support
systems, in which each level will help students succeed in reading, math and other subject areas, while
also providing guidance and help with the social and
emotional issues faced by students in the grade 3-5
age group. It will be a multi-year project, Glomski
said, involving a large number of people, including
parents, in dealing with the unique needs of a large
number of students to develop positive behavior support plans.
Glomski also commented on the talented and
dedicated staff at BIS, saying that they are above
and beyond in every way in their attitude and work
ethic, which is also reflected in the students. She
also described her school as a really joyful place to
be.

BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL

All about 21st century skills

Text and photo by David Hannula
The fusion of technology and art is an
area that has captured the imagination of
Becker Middle School (BMS) Principal
Nancy Helmer, in particular an installation
of art works that will create a display of the
entire Periodic Table of Elements.
The interdisciplinary approach to education, called STEAM (science, technology,
engineering, art and mathematics), will provide a deeper learning experience for students, Helmer said, with more opportunities
to build programs that challenge students to
be more creative with high-level innovation.
With plans approved for all K-12 students in the district to have iPads, Helmer
says the gains will far outweigh the costs
and start-up problems as the students get
the tools they need to learn 21st Century
skills. Collaboration is already underway

as more and more classrooms are flipped

to replace the old-style chalkboard learning
modes with modern electronic methods.
Helmer expects the infrastructure to be fully
defined in the school within the next three
to five years.
The BMS goal is also to teach students
that they will need some form of further education after high school, whether that is
military or technical training rather than traditional college or university, Helmer said
that data strongly indicates that some form
of post-secondary education and training
will be vital for future success.
And students in middle school are
growing and developing, they also have social and emotional challenges to meet while
they make decisions on their futures. The
current core curriculum is solid, Helmer
said, with the challenge now of creating a
system in which a high percentage of stu-

There are also high numbers of BMS students involved in extra-curricular activities
every year, Helmer said, with activities including sports, musical and theatrical performance and art.

BECKER PRIMARY SCHOOL

All day Kindergarten a plus

The development of all-day kindergarten has proven to be a plus for the
Becker Primary School (BPS), according to
Principal Dale Christensen, allowing educators to work with the youngest students
while they are in their critical formative
years. The Early Childhood programs now
are contacting more families than before,
and are able to meet parents and children
and to identify individual student needs
much earlier in the educational process. It
makes a big difference for the kids, he said.

Another learning that is growing is the

foster grandparent program at BPS, which
now has five volunteers who work with students 15 to 20 hours per week. Christensen
said that the individual attention has a huge
effect on how young students learn, and the
intergenerational contact helps develop
foundational skills that help students to become socialized for later life.
Students develop close bonds with the
foster grandparents, Christensen said, greeting them in the hallways and enjoying the
opportunity to hear
their life experiences
during the school day.
BPS students
will have access to individual iPads next
year,
Christensen
said, and they are already familiar with

will help students in all aspects of learning, he said, but
especially in math and reading. Collaboration and communication will be vital to developing those foundational learning skills
that all students will need in the as yet unknown future they will be living in.
The challenge for schools then is to
teach students how to use and process information correctly as they begin the learning
process.

BECKER SCHOOLS CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

Supporting the vision

Jean Duffy,
Director of Curriculum and
Instruction,
Becker School District
By David Hannula, staff writer

The mission of her department is to support the Becker

School District goal of preparing self-directed learners to
thrive in a changing global community, according to Jean
Duffy, director of curriculum
and instruction for the district.

That implementation is accomplished in four component

parts, Duffy said, beginning
with the implementation of a
guaranteed and viable curriculum articulated across grade
levels and aligned to state
and/or national standards.
The development of Professional Learning Communities
(PLCs) is a primary method of
implementing this goal, with
teachers in the same grade coming together and sharing information on class material and
teaching techniques, combining
to provide the same level of
teaching support to every student
in every class. This uniform approach will also be reflected in

report cards next year, Duffy

said, and teachers have expressed positive feedback in regard to more uniform teaching
requirements and methods.
The program will benefit
teachers in the next year of
classes when fully implemented, as they will have a reasonable expectation that the
incoming students will all be at
a similar level of preparation for
the next level of education.
The second part of the plan
involves infusion across the
curriculum of 21st Century
skills as defined by the text titles
The Global Achievement Gap
by Tony Wagner. These will include: Critical thinking and

problem solving; collaboration;

agility and adaptability; initiative and entrepreneurialism; effective oral and written
communication; accessing and
analyzing information and curiosity and imagination.
The third component is implementation of the improvements in teaching and learning
articulated in The Art and Science of Teaching, by Robert
Marzano, which will be used as
a framework for developing effective teaching methods.
This approach also includes
the implementation of Professional Learning Communities
(PLCs) that will provide

BECKER SCHOOLS - INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Finding the best uses of

teaching technology
Text and photo by
David Hannula, staff writer

Students think and learn

differently when using 21st
Century tools, according to
Ryan Cox, Director of Instructional Technology for the
Becker School District. And
while more and more technology appears in the classroom
each year, Cox says that the
focus should not be on just technology, but rather on how the
technology can be used to improve student performance in
the classroom.
Cox is also all about the 4

Cs approach: Communication, Collaboration, Critical

Thinking and Creativity. That is
why the plan to make the district a K-12 iPad environment
is important for student thinking
and learning. Without their individual devices, Cox says, students do not have the same level
of spontaneity in the classroom,
and are not as open to information as other students with more
advanced equipment might be.
The modified flip classroom is one example of this, in
that students now get so much
information from electronic de-

vices both in and out of the

classroom, it affects the ways in
which they learn and retain information. This requires a new
kind of teaching as well. High
school math teaching, Cox said,
has done a fantastic job of
providing out-of-class support
for students, allowing them to
communicate with teacher and
fellow students while working
on problems rather than having
to wait until the next day in the
classroom to find answers.
Becker students have already taken part in TED presentations,
(Technology,

Ryan Cox
Director of Instructional
Technology

Entertainment and Design) in

which the students present lectures to teachers in the area of
technology. Students also led
tours and gave presentations at
a recent Apple site visit which
drew educators from school districts around Minnesota and surrounding states to observe

BECKER COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Life long learning

Text and photo by
David Hannula, staff writer
The Community Education
office in the Becker schools is
reaching out to citizens of all
ages in the area, seeking to provide a full range of services
from cradle to grave, according to Director Michelle Peacock.
The programs begin with
early childhood efforts like
Small Wonders and Camp
Opportunity for older kids.
The Comm Ed. office also handles a variety of after-school
programs and enhancement
classes, as well as programs for
adults and senior citizens that
include out-of-community experiences like bus tours or trips

to attend shows and performances in the Twin Cities or St.

Cloud.
One new development Peacock is particularly interested in
is the new aquatic facility at
Becker High School, which is
also being used to provide open
swimming for community
members on Saturday mornings. Designed to allow BHS to
hold home swimming meets for
the first time in a decade, the
pool provides eight lanes of
open swimming and a diving
well with two diving boards.
Cost is $3 per person or $15 per
family, (children 10 and under
must have an adult in the pool
with them, 14 and over must
have an adult in the pool area).

A log rolling league is also in

the works, Peacock said, with
potential teams from Foley, Elk
River and Monticello joining a
Becker squad to compete on the
special plastic logs used in the
modern version of the sport.
The program is constantly
adding opportunities in academics, sports, travel and the arts,
Peacock, said, and is constantly
on the look-out for new ideas
along those lines. The office
also works with the Becker
Youth Sports Association on
summer programs and camps
each year. Adult programs already in place include volleyball, an adult tennis league and
mens basketball.
After several years in debt,

Becker Community
Education Director
Michelle Peacock

Peacock also said that the program currently has a positive

fund balance. By not being
funded through the overall K-12
budget, the existing programs
will not be subject to cuts in the
event of a future district budget
shortfall.

Becker Chamber striving

to support and grow
By Bill Morgan, Staff Writer
A little over three years ago, the board members of the Becker
Area Chamber of Commerce were discussing the possibility of dissolving the chamber due to the economic down turn, financial difficulties and lack of leadership.
But after increased involvement from chamber members, a restructuring and new guidance under two past managers, the board
is starting 2015 with goals of expansion and growth rather than concern for loss.
One year ago, the BACC found a new home at city hall and
last November, Lynette Brannan was named office manager by the
board following the resignation of Elaine Brustad. The chamber for
several years had rented an office on First Street from Amy
Chmielewski.
For many years, the BACC had a president at the helm but with
the near dissolvement the board decided to pare down and give
the everyday duties of the institution to the capable hands of the office manager.
The Becker chambers incorporation began with the settlement
of pioneers in the mid 1850s who called this area Pleasant Valley.
The establishment of the Pleasant Valley Post Office in 1866 and
arrival of the railroad in 1867 ensured the settlements long term
survival. Becker Township, organized in 1871, and the City of
Becker, incorporated in 1901, were named after George Loomis

Businesses on the rise

By Bill Morgan, staff writer

Amanda Othoudt and
Becker city staff have done
an outstanding job bringing
in and retaining businesses in
the Becker Industrial Park.
As a matter of fact, Othoudt
expects almost every single
existing building in the park
to be occupied by spring
2015.
Othoudt, Beckers community development coordinator, has been working
tirelessly at her job building
and developing Beckers
business sector since she took
over for Nick Zeigelman in
August of 2012.
Othoudt lives in Foley
where she graduated from
Foley High School in 2000.

She attended St. Cloud State

University and graduated
with honors, studying planning and community development
(major)
and
economics and heritage
preservation (minors) while
there.
Prior to her hire at
Becker, Othoudt worked at
Lyon Contracting and Development, Trident Development Group and Concrete,
Inc. in St. Cloud while attending school. Her duties included
administration,
marketing, IT and reception.
When Othoudt was hired
by the City of Becker, she
said the most important
thing she can do for the city
right now is help to retain the
current business entities, expand business growth and
help increase Beckers tax
base.
Shes done just that. And
the future looks bright for
Becker.
Othoudt and staff visited
17 area businesses in 2013 to
find out their needs and display support for the companies. In 2014, she and staff
visited 39 companies.
Twenty-eight percent of
the businesses visited are said
to be planning expansion to
their businesses within the
next few years. T.J. Potter has
already started their
expansion project in 2014 and
hope to be
completed by
early 2015. Becker Screen
Print is expected to invest in
a larger facility this year at
the location formerly housed
by Bodys by Ralph.
Othoudt says of the businesses visited in 2014, the
number of new hires within
the next year will increase by
approximately 28%. The total
number of employees is ex-

pected to increase from 421

to 537 over the next year,
which equates to a net increase of 116 new jobs in the
local area.
Business Growth
Darter Plastics has created nine new FT positions
since 2013 and anticipates
creating another five more
jobs in 2015. They have invested in new equipment

They are anticipating investing in additional equipment
valuing at approximately
$75,000 in 2015.
Plymouth Foam has created eight new FT positions
in the last year and has invested $250,000 in new
equipment in 2014.
Fire Buggz purchased
one of the vacant buildings in
the park and remodeled the
8,684 square foot building to
accommodate their growing
outdoor accessory business.
They began production at the
site in early 2014 and have
created three FT and one PT
positions.
Rahbains Outdoor built
a new, 3,120 sq. ft. retail facility along Hwy. 10 this past
year. The project has an estimated taxable value of
$96,600.

staff assisted in closing out
the former development

anticipating employing eight
new FT positions in 2015.
Lear Holdings (Legacy

store building off Hwy. 10 into
commercial office space. The
completed remodeling project
equated to approximately
$19,900 of taxable value and
fills an existing property that
had been sitting vacant for several months.
Liberty Tax opened business in Becker in November of
2014 along First Street. Good
Spirits & Smoke opened a
month later near the same location in December of 2014. Stolt

Trucking opened their doors for

business in August of 2014 in
the industrial park.
CNC COPS recently purchased the former Auction

CHAMBER to page 38
led to the incorporation of the Becker
Area Chamber of Commerce in December
of 1975. The Becker Area Chamber of
Commerce has been providing the core
services established by their founders since
inception and their membership had grown
to over 140 members.
Today, the BACC preserves 75 members.
The Becker Area Chamber of Commerce is organized to advance the general
welfare and prosperity of the Becker area so
that its citizens and all areas of its business
community shall prosper. All necessary
means of promotion shall be provided and
particular attention and emphasis shall be
given to the economic, civil, commercial,
industrial and educational interests of the
area.
Brannan says the goal of the chamber

is to do well for its members and give them

opportunities to network at monthly luncheons, annual meetings and socials and participate in the annual Becker Business Expo
and golf tournament.
Its been an exciting year for the
chamber with all the changes weve made
and its great to see it start thriving again,
said Brannan. I really appreciate seeing
participation from our members at our
luncheons and events.
By the end of 2015, Brannan hopes
there will be more affiliates who become
members and attend events. Within the year,
she said she hopes to continue to work with
the City of Becker to conduct retention visits to all the businesses to get to know them
better and show their support.
Its important for the businesses we
have in our organization to know we are
wholly devoted to provide for them and
help them prosper, Brannan said.

Current chamber boardmembers are:

Mike Brubaker, chairman (Sherburne
County History Center); Tanya Danielson,
vice chair (Sherburne State Bank); Carol
VanHeel, treasurer (Friends of Sherburne
National Wildlife Refuge); Larry Newell,
director
(Liberty Paper);
Amy
Chmielewski, director (Amercian Family
Insurance).
Membership benefits include: monthly
membership meetings, networking events,

Senior Center a meeting place
Text and Photos by David Hannula

The Becker Area Senior Center celebrated 15-months in existence in December, 2014, according to Coordinator Carol
Brunn. The facility is open to residents
of the communities of Becker, Big Lake,
Clear Lake, Duelm, Palmer and Santiago
who are at least 55 years of age. The
group meets in a space in the Becker City
Hall, Room 140, on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Brunn said that the establishment of
the facility took the efforts of dedicated
individuals and agencies working for a
long time before the BASC opened its
doors. It is a Minnesota non-profit organization with IRS 501C3 tax exempt status, and the City of Becker provides the
meeting space at no cost to the organization. Expenses are currently funded by

grants, corporate donations, free-will offerings and fundraisers throughout the

year, Brunn said. There is a board of directors, with nine members voted on by
the membership, and a further 11 members made up of stakeholders from
groups that serve senior citizens.
The facility hosts a wide variety of
activities each year, including card parties, musical performances, Bingo with
prizes provided by McDonalds of
Becker, historical and cultural speakers, a
walking club, and off-site trips to sites of
interest in the area. Whittling with
Tom was also offered in 2014.

The fourth component includes instructional technology
initiatives, such as the one-toone iPad implementation at the

technologies deployed around
the district through the Office of

Duffy noted the development of uniform methods of
teaching and use of the same
materials is important in student
development, since a lack of
student readiness from year to
year results in time-consuming
review of concepts and skills
students should have learned
in the previous year.
Another goal is to also end
the past practice of teaching to
the test, concentrating more effort on student retention of instructional materials as opposed
to simply cramming to meet
test requirements, the idea being
that memorizing facts is not the
same thing as long-term learning. The stated rationale is:
Emphasizing depth over
breadth could actually help retention of essential concepts and
skills.
The development of Pro-

fessional Learning Communities (PLCs) will give teachers

an opportunity to discuss teaching techniques with their peers,
including classroom observation and videotaped teaching
sessions through which to discuss methods that offer greater
chances of success.

Marzano method will take between three and five years, Duffy
said, as each element of the
classroom experience is examined and modified in the quest
for uniformity in each grade
level.
The district is also working
with Resource Training and Solutions in St. Cloud, Duffy said,
concentrating on leadership
training and developing the language to talk about instruction
among teachers and administrators.
The Office of Curriculum
and Instruction is also responsible for the following areas:
Curriculum review/academic
standards; district testing; staff
development; Federal programs/title grant; integration
grant; homeschool support; district advisory committee; Response to Intervention (RTI);
English language learner support; enrichment programs;
BRIDGES and mental health,

Little Farm Hands For Sherburne County

Text and Photos
by David Hannula
The Little Farm Hands
(LFH) program is moving
ahead in Sherburne County,
with plans to begin construction
of a permanent exhibit site in
2015. Construction of the
barn/exhibit site is expected to
begin as soon as the $200,000
fund-raising goal is met, according to organizer Jean Johnson.
Johnson said the committee
would very much like to begin
work on the barn project in
2015, since that marks the 20year anniversary of the donation
of the land by the Cox family
for the purpose of constructing
the SHC facility.
A number of fund-raising
events are planned for the future, including a clay shoot a
the Wild Marsh Sporting Clays
facility in Sept. 2015, an event
which was very successful last
year.

CHAIRPERSON. Jean Johnson has served as the chairperson of the Little Farm
Hands/Farm Friends Barn
project for several years, and
she is optimistic that construction on the barn project
can begin this summer at a
site near the Sherburne History Center in Becker. (Photo
by David Hannula)

The
Little
Farm
Hands/Farm Friends Barn project continues to move forward
with the latest development

being achievement of 501c3 status as a non-profit organization.

The barn project still expects to begin construction on a
plot of land near the Sherburne
History Center (SHC) campus
in Becker, though the exact
specifications on the site are still
being worked on with county
officials, Johnson said.
The Program
The program is designed to
give children a first-hand experience with the workings of a
farm, including learning all of
the aspects of the business in
taking produce and livestock
from field to marketplace. The
exhibit at the Sherburne County
Fair this summer had a series of
chores that kids could perform, after which they would
collect wages that they could
convert to goods in the company
store at the site. They also got
hands-on experience in chores
like collecting eggs, and learning how to milk a mechanical

cow.
The barn site will be used to
house year-round LFH activities, including educational exhibits and related presentations.
Donations are being accepted for the project, and more
volunteers are needed for the
various related activities, Johnson said. Donations are also tax
deductible to the extent allowed
by law, Johnson said.
Current LFH/FFB board
members include Dennis Fuchs,
Bill Bronder, Francine Larson,
Mike Brubaker, Jason Selvog,
and Carole Iten.
For more information or to
make a donation to the
LFH/FFB project, contact LFH
Coordinator Jean Johnson at

resident wildlife. The gently rolling topography of the refuge lies in a transition zone of two major ecosystems
deciduous hardwood forest and tallgrass
prairie.

Spring and fall provide the best seasons to observe wildlife, and are
generally considered to be the most comfortable for visitors. Winter provides great opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and enjoying the sights and sounds of the season. A majority of
the refuge is designated a wildlife sanctuary and closed to public
