KEY NOTES from the Principal

New State-wide Traffic Laws Effective January 1, 2010

Please see the attached announcement form the Park Ridge Police Department regarding two
new laws effective on January 1st. The first law indicates it is illegal to text message or do e-mail
while driving. The second law states that it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving in a school
zone or a construction zone. The Park Ridge Police and School District 64 would like you to be
aware of these changes in state laws.

Kindergarten and New Student Registration

Kindergarten and Transfer Students are encouraged to register on February 2nd and February 4th
from 4:00 through 7:00. It is very important for us to get all registration and information for
planning and hiring purposes for next year. If you are planning to register a student please come to
the open registration times. If you cannot make it, please call the office and stop by the school
office with the completed paperwork.

Spelling Bee
The District 64 Spelling Bee is scheduled for Monday January 25th. The final day for registration is
Friday January 22nd. Please see the attachment in today packet regarding registration. This is a
great opportunity for students to work on their spelling skills in a fun competitive event. I
encourage all of our third through fifth grade students to participate.

Night of the Stars

The Night of the Stars is set up for Thursday, February 25th. This evening event is a great
opportunity for students to perform for parents and their classmates. Tryouts will be held on
Friday February 5th after school. Look for information in this Flyer.

Reminder to Fifth Grade Parents

A presentation will be held on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010, to give parents and their fifth grade
students an opportunity to preview the films that will be shown during health class in the spring.
These films, Just Around the Corner for Boys and Just Around the Corner for Girls, are shown during
the Human Growth and Development unit of the fifth grade health curriculum The screening will
take place at Carpenter School, 300 N. Hamlin, beginning at 7:00pm. Letters were mailed to
parents in December, notifying them of preview opportunities. (The parent-only preview
opportunity took place on January 13, 2010.) If you wish to preview these movies at home, they are
available at the Park Ridge Public Library.

Fifth Grade Parent Night at Emerson

Fifth grade parents, Mark your calendars for Fifth Grade Parent Night at Emerson Middle
School. Please see the attached announcement with more details. This is an important evening for
you and your soon to be middle school students. Both parents and students should attend.

IMPORTANT BUS REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR 2010-2011

February is Bus Registration Month. Students who will ride the bus during the 2010-
2011 school year need to register for bus service in February. Bus registration is done
annually and forms will be included in the February Take Home. To register your child
you can download the bus registration form or obtain a registration form from your
school office. The District must have a completed bus registration form for every student
that will ride the bus. If a form is not submitted we will assume that your child will not
be riding the bus for the 2010-2011 school year and we will remove his or her name from
the transportation list. Return the completed registration form to your building secretary.
Current 5th grade students who will be a middle school student in 2010-2011 will need to
return their completed form to their elementary school secretary.

Free bus transportation is available for students (K-8) if they live 1-1/2 miles or more
from school and students (K-6) who live in an area that is declared to be hazardous.

The 2010-2011 bus fee for paid riders will be $510 for the annual pass and $305 for the
cold weather pass.

How can you help the troops and our

environment?
! Get those old, unwanted cell phones out of
your junk drawer.
! Collect phones from family and friends.
! If your cell phone has a SIM card, please remove it.
! If you do not have a SIM card, clear the phone’s memory of contacts and other stored information.

! Drop off your phones in the Cell Phones for Soldiers bin near your school’s office or main entrance by Friday,
January 29.
! Because Cell Phones for Soldiers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, you may print a donation receipt available

How do the troops benefit?

! The recycling company, ReCellular, who is the exclusive partner of Cell Phones for Soldiers, purchases our
donated cell phones. (The Chamber of Commerce office is the main collection point for Park Ridge.)
! Money from ReCellular goes to the Cell Phones for Soldiers non-profit organization.
! Cell Phones for Soldiers purchases calling cards and sends them to troops in need – all branches of the U.S.
military are included.
! Each donated cell phone will provide a soldier an hour of talk time with their loved ones.

What happens to the donated cell phones?

! Functional phones may be reconditioned, reprogrammed, and sold to wholesalers from more than 40 countries.
! Phones that cannot be resold are dismantled and recycled.

Recycling Facts:
1. Recycling cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions, keeps valuable material out of landfills and
incinerators, and conserves natural resources.
2. According to the EPA, if Americans recycled 100 million phones, we could save enough upstream energy to
power more than 194,000 U.S. households for a year.
3. If consumers were able to reuse those 100 million cell phones, the environmental savings would be even greater,
saving enough energy to power more than 370,000 U.S. homes each year.
4. Recycling just ONE million cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road
for a year.
5. The EPA has targeted cell phone recycling because fewer than 20 percent of cell phones are recycled each year
and most people do not know where to recycle them.

A person may not operate a motor vehicle
on a roadway while using an
electronic communication device to compose,
send or read an electronic message.

625 ILCS 5/12-601.1 (e)

A person, regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at any
time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school
speed zone established under Section 11-605, or on a highway in a
construction or maintenance speed zone established under Section
11-605.1.
This subsection (e) does not apply to (1) a person engaged in a
highway construction or maintenance project for which a construction
or maintenance speed zone has been established, (2) a person using a
wireless telephone for emergency purposes, including, but not limited
to, law enforcement agency, health care provider, fire department, or
other emergency services agency or entity, (3) a law enforcement
officer or operator of an emergency vehicle when performing the
officer’s or operator’s official duties or (4) to a person using the
wireless telephone in a voice-activated mode.

The District 64 Traffic Safety Committee encourages

all drivers to be aware of these important changes
effective throughout Illinois.

WINTERFEST 2010

• Do you have friends or family who work for a business that could donate a product or service for
the Winterfest Grand Raffle?
• How about the various sporting season ticket holders who cannot attend a game…do not let those
tickets go to waste! We will gladly raffle them to help our school.
• Here is a good one- How about that holiday gift that you will not use? You never know… one
person’s junk may be another person’s treasure!

Some examples of past donations were electronic items, books, videos, athletic goods and clothing,
toys, and gift certificates to restaurants, coffee shops, ice- cream shops, hair
salons and spas.

You may deliver donations to the school office, my home or if it is more

convenient, I will gladly pick them up. Please be sure to sign the donation
log in the school office so we know whom to thank.

Any donation is great appreciated as all Winterfest proceeds go

 GIFT BASKET SILENT AUCTION

The Franklin Winterfest will be held on Saturday, February 20th, and we would like
your help! Last year’s Gift Basket Silent Auction was a HUGE success, earning about
$2,700 for Franklin School! We are hoping this year’s auction will be just as successful.

Each classroom has been assigned a theme for a basket. The themes are listed on the
following page. If you would like to participate, you may donate a new, store-bought
item related to the theme and have your child bring it into their class. Please use your
imaginations so we don’t receive too many duplicate items! We accept cash donations
for the basket as well. You may also choose to donate towards another basket, in that
case, please drop off the donation to the office and tell the wonderful secretaries it is
for the gift baskets. This activity is completely optional, however, your donations help
make this event a successful fundraiser. All items need to be turned in to your child’s
classroom by Wednesday, February 17th.

We are also pleased to announce that if you would like to purchase any kitchen-related
items for a basket, you may shop at Dominic’s Kitchen Store in Park Ridge and
receive 20% off your item! Just make sure to bring in a copy of the Gift Basket Theme
sheet and mention that you are buying an item for Franklin’s Gift Basket auction to get
the discount. How great is that? We would like to thank our own Cimilluca family for
making this donation happen. Of course, this offer wouldn’t have been possible
