The run-down basketball court at the end of the road is where the few young children still in Papan, Perak,
spends their evenings.

Pride of Papan
The final round of the R.AGE Trailblazer took place in Papan, Perak, last week. The quaint
town is not commonly known, and its claim to fame is that it was home to World War II
hero Sybil Kathigasu, who assisted resistance fighters against the Japanese. A short visit
there is akin to walking back in time the paint is peeling on the walls of old shop lots
and wooden houses are still aplenty. NIKI CHEONG immortalises the past in pictures.

Raja Bilahs house is surrounded by fortress walls.

New village-style wooden houses still stand in Papan.

Abandoned shophouses are common on the main road in this quiet town.

Sybil Kathigasus former clinic has been turned into a memorial.
