Ramblers down Elks in close contest

BOYNE CITY — It wasn’t
pretty, but a win is a win.
The Boyne City football
team came away with a
hard-fought, back and
forth, down to the wire,
Northern Michigan Foot-
ball League I victory over
the visiting Elk Rapids
Elks 28-23 on October 17 at
a rain soaked Earl Brother-
ston Field.
Boyne City survived a
late drive by the Elks,
which had marched inside
the Rambler 10-yard line
with under 20 seconds to
play, but when Elk Rapids
quarterback Adam Traut-
man brought his team to
the line of scrimmage to
set up a quick spike of the
ball to stop the clock, he
lost control of the rain
slicked football and it
slipped out of his hands as
he fumbled it across the
line and Boyne City’s defen-
sive linemen Connor Beebe
pounced on it, giving the
Ramblers possession and
the ability to run out the
clock and secure the win.
With the victory, Boyne
City clinches at least a
share of the Northern
Michigan Football League I
title in the league’s inaugu-
ral season.
Things got off to a rocky
start for the Ramblers, as
their first play from scrim-
mage deep in Boyne terri-
tory, a botched handoff
squirted free and into the
hands of the Elks defense,
giving Elk Rapids the ball
and a short field to work
with just 10 seconds into
the contest.
The Elks would waste lit-
tle time in finding the end-
zone as Trautman would
hook up with a wide open

EAST JORDAN — The East
Jordan football team put up a
valiant effort, but came up just
shy in battling both Mother Na-
ture and the Harbor Springs
Rams in falling 8-6 in a North-
ern Michigan Football League
II contest on October 17.
“The kids played hard, but
just came up short,” East Jor-
dan coach Allan Peterson said.
“We’re proud of their effort and
never giving up.”
The Red Devils dominated the
time of possession, holding the
ball for 37:30 compared to that
of the Rams 19:19, but could
only find the end zone one time.
With the contest going back
and forth on the rain soaked
field for a majority of the first
two and a half quarters, the
Rams were finally able to get on
the scoreboard as Jason Wixon
took a handoff and plowed his
way in from two yards out. Fol-
lowing a successful two-point
conversion by Jack Carter, Har-
bor led 8-0 with 4:20 remaining
in the third quarter.
East Jordan would then punt
away their next possession, set-
ting the stage for a big defen-
sive stand by the Red Devils
which held the Rams to a four
and out, resulting in a punt at-
tempt on fourth down that was
successfully blocked by EJ’s
Marco Mata and recovered by
teammate Wyatt Crick at the
Harbor 15 yard line.

game,” coach Peterson noted.

FRANKFORT — Every game
counts!
As the Charlevoix football teams
clings to hopes of their first trip to
the playoffs since 2009, not only does
each game count, but every snap
counts.
The Rayder football team inched
closer to the reality of a postseason
appearance as they picked up a much
needed victory on the road over
Frankfort, 27-6 to give them a 5-3
overall, 3-1 NMFL II, record on the
season, making their magical num-
ber one, with one regular season con-
test remaining.
Charlevoix’s defense set the tone
for the game, setting up the first
score of the contest by recovering a
fumble at the 3-yard line.
“We came after them, we flew to
the ball and the kids played really
hard,” Charlevoix coach Ron Bindi
said. “We came in not wanting to let
their running back beat us, and also
got after their quarterback.”
Rayder running back Ben Boss
made sure to capitalize for the team,
taking it in for an early score and
with a successful Hunter Cox extra
point, a 7-0 Charlevoix lead.
The Charlevoix defense wasn’t
done as on Frankfort’s next posses-
sion, Nate Moon intercepted a pass
and returned it 20 yards for a pick-six
and a 13-0 Rayder lead as the point

all the scoring for the remainder of
the quarter and first half.
Once the second half began, the
Rayders got things rolling again as
Boss busted free for a 47-yard run to

The Charlevoix defense limited the
Panthers to 38 total yards on offense,
led by Bryan Noirot, Spencer Kil-
patrick, both of whom spent an abun-
dant amount of time in the Frankfort
backfield, recording six sacks and a
trio of tackles for lost yardage.
Austin Putman also had an inter-
ception for the Rayders.
The Rayder offense was paced by
the north-south running of Ben Boss,
who tallied 135 yards on 21 carries
and three scores.
Moon finished 3-of-7 passing for 35
yards as Noirot caught two of them
for 25 yards.
“Our defense set the tone, were re-
ally pleased with both sides of the
ball,” Bindi added. “Offensively, we
took care of the ball and got out of
trouble when we needed to.”

CHARLEVOIX — The
Charlevoix boys soccer team
came into the contest with 18
wins under their belt, including
a pair of those over the Harbor
Springs Rams.
This time around it would be
the Rams coming out on top with
a 2-1 Division IV district final
victory over the Rayders on Oc-
tober 17.
The Rayders got on the board
first as Noah Carson booted
home the score with 1:20 to go in
the first half on an assist from
Walker Drost, staking
Charlevoix to a 1-0 lead.
After the break, Harbor’s
Kolton Jacobs would knot the
score at 1-1 with a goal at the
29:28 mark.
Both team would go back and
forth, slipping and sliding all
over the marsh like field, thanks
to the rain over the next 15 plus
minutes when Harbor’s Nick
Bonter took a pass from Lamp-
ton Kamalii and found the back
of the net with 12:21 to play for a
2-1 Ram lead and the final score
of the contest.
J.J. Wachler made nine saves
in goal for the Rayders in taking
the loss, while Harbor’s Parker
Fairbairn had seven for the win.
Charlevoix closes out an 18-5
campaign.
