Site Test Procedures for Oil filled Transformers

The proposed Site test procedure is as follows:1. Visual Inspection of the transformers: The site installed oil filled transformers shall undergo
a visual examination as per G.A. Drawings and customer specifications to verify name plate
details, ratings, colour markings, all internally mounted components and makes wherever
applicable, neutral connection ,bushing seals, bucholz relays , cable glands, gland plate, and
makes wherever applicable. The verification shall indicate that it shall be similar to the
approved General Arrangement Drawing. . Inspection shall be carried out for any damage during
transportation and installation. Visual inspection for silica breathers, Oil level, Grounding and for
any leakage of oil shall be carried out.

2. Breakdown voltage test for transformer oil: Breakdown voltage test for transformer oil is
done by using BDV test kit with 2.5mm sphere gap as per BS148.Sample will be taken from
bottom side of transformer main tank. If the average of six test conducted on one sample is
more than 30kV, the oil is considered as good condition.

Measurement of voltage ratio, polarity & vector group. Transformer ratio, polarity and
vector group shall be tested to ensure the correctness of voltage ratio between different
windings (HV/LV) on each tapping with an acceptance tolerance of 0.5%.
Vector relationship is also established and verified during the measurement. This test (voltage
ratio, polarity &vector group) can be done by using Transformer turns ratio test set.
Measurement of winding resistance of HV & LV: Winding resistance of HV & LV is
measured by using winding resistance meter. The resistance value can be changed according
to Atmospheric temp. The equality of resistance can be verified by this test.
Measurement of insulation resistance: Insulation resistance test for HV & LV winding shall
be carried out by applying a test voltage of
a) 5000 V between HV/E. and HV/LV
b) 1000V for LV/E if transformers LV side voltage is rated for 440V.
c) 5000V for LV/E if transformers LV side voltage is rated for 3.3kV or above.

6 Functional check of Temperature switches, buchholz relays All protective switches should
be checked for their assigned functionality. For Testing Temperature switches, normalize the
DC power at annunciation panel, HT side SWGR and LT side Switchgear. Put the Both end
CBs at test position in closed condition. Reset all Aux relays.

6.1)

6.2)

Operate the knob provided on Temperature switch for test purpose to get alarm at
Annunciation panel. Operate the knob further to get trip at both end CBs. Check
respective Aux relays operated at switchgear.
Operate (press downward) the knob provided on Buchholz Relay slowly to get alarm at
annunciation panel. Operate the knob further to get trip at both end CBs. Check
respective Aux relays operated at switchgear.
