Chronology of Persepolis:

Reza Shah is put into power by westerners, and controlled by the


English/Americans
The Shah is his son, he creates a disparity between the rich and poor,
many revolutionaries were against him due to his policies. He was a bit
dictator-y
The beginning of the book starts after the Islamic revolution, hops back
in the next chapter to before, and starts telling the tale of the
revolution and how Marji grew up in that time
Marjis parents were wealthy, part of the discrepancy, Marji
doesnt like the difference between the classes (they have a car,
maid etc.)
The revolution wanted to absolve social class, (communism was in
fashion at that time), and those who supported communism disliked
the shah (e.g. marjis parents), they got sent to prison often
Difference in social class exemplified by child labour > told by a
local author she liked, she realizes the difference, and her
shame of her fathers Cadillac
Furthermore by her maid (came to her house at 8, raised her,
never went to school, peasant)
Marji the reason for my shame and for the revolution is the
same: the difference between social classes
Marji is growing up through this, can see character development from
chid to adult (childish attempts to sympathize and understand the
troubles around her, she often got distracted when talked to e.g. Im
hungry during grandmother description of the failures of the shah)
Character developed from early on when not understanding,
she would read lots of books about it
I knew everything but doesnt understand
Black Friday a day where numerous were killed, attacked by the
soldiers, so many were killed that it was almost thought to be an
invasion; start of massacres endlessness embodied by the mass of
identical bodies in the panel, seems like it never ends
Afterwards, the revolution ended and the Shah left in exile (cuz he tired
for democracy)
After the revolution everyone changed, all said that the Shah was shit
(conformity, asch, unanimity)

Childishness of Marji as she tries to stick nails into ramin, whos


dad mightve been part of the shahs secret police, a childish
attempt to reconcile her ideas with the people around her
Learns about forgiveness in talking to more people, she grows a
bit older in understanding that people arent always in charge of
their actions
Child in that she has difficulties empathising/understanding
She learned about torture, which affects a lot of her actions later on
gave [her] new ideas for games
Irony of torture right after trying to forgive
Her mothers trying to teach her two things, after the
revolution things changed for her mother after she found
out what torture her friends went through
You have to forgive > Bad people are dangerous
but forgiving them is too
Childishness in that she would have her father jailed and
tortured so that he could be called a hero than have him safe

UNCLE ANOOOOSHHHH

She saw him as the hero her father wasnt, childish ideas of one
upping by other peoples achievements e.g. during anooshs
story, she keeps comparing him against Lalys father
Shes willing to tell her friends all about the heros of her family
In a country with half the people illiterate, cant unite around marx
requires religiousness
Childish in that she believes TV (e.g. believed that the shah was
chosen by god, believed that 99.99% voted for Islam, vs. her
father, he brings doubt into her life and showed her that things
werent always as they seemed, tells her whats really
happening in all cases)
the end of the world when a boy she liked left
As more stuff in Islam go to jail, revolutionise against the shah are
hunted down the fundamentalist regime
Anoosh repeats everything will be alright at the end of pages
65 and 66, but with a different image (defiant and sad > shows
progression and impact, also disbelief in his own words)

Things change after Anooshs death, Marji explosively rejects and


abandons god; the war beings
1 year of passing between Anooshs death and the start of the next passage
As the fundamentalist regime sets in, gender roles start coming in
Marji wants to become an educated, liberated woman
The fundamentalist oppression of women parallels the panels in the
beginning of the novel, threaten to rape Marjis mom, start to
implement necessity of the veil
modern woman progressive man pg 75
See another change of the people like when the revolution against the
shah succeeded, sees how quickly people change ideas and sides
Starts the revolt against fundamentalism
Reach the point where the novel started half way through the book
Iraq-Iran war begins
See character growth that even though she said she wanted to be a prophet,
it ends up fading into her pastShe breaks the 4th wall sometimes... (not significant)
Horrors of war present in the key, sacrifice for a chance at heaven
the key to heaven was for poor people
Marjis family is also against the Islamist regime, and fights it by doing
banned things like cards parties and wine
Character development in that she matures, doubts the
maternal instinct as her aunt abandons her baby on marji
Marjis character, despite being more introspective, was still a child
e.g. she went out for burgers cuz she wanted to be cool
Book focuses less on her personal narrative the older she gets, but
more on whats happening around her (she becomes more involved the
older she gets)
you are the guardian of the revolution of this house
Shows an understanding of what happens around her, but still childish
as believes a cigarette makes her a grown up
look at how little marji is growing up. One day shell leave and youll see how
hard it is to lose your kids
Marjis dealings with the female guardians of the revolution

She feels less for fighting as time goes on


A WAR ON TWO FRONTS. ISLAMIC REVOLUTION AND MARJIS PERSONAL WAR,
AS WELL AS THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR
VISUALS HIGHTEN THE READER EXPERIENCE, EXPLAIN MORE THAN THE
WORDS DO, ESPECIALLY THEIR EFFECTS ON YOUNG MARJI
>burning of the movie theater
>bombings
>torture
>when shes lost after abandoning god
Sometimes highlights numbers and loss of identity through identical images
repeated
>pg 102 especially haunting as it contrasts with the images
immediately after
Bombing and keys around each neck vs. a happy party
Also produced a sudden change in tone
Showed 2 sides to the war, as this story continually does
Usage of images sometimes provokes more powerful images than words
e.g. Marjis family at the hospital and truly seeing the horrors of war on
the people for the first time
When her friend died, a completely black panel was used to depict her
emotions, because she didnt know what she was feeling, or she was
feeling everything, or it was up to the readers to decide and to feel
without any hindrance No scream in the world could have relieved my
suffering and my anger
Sometimes sees things from another perspective one usually wouldnt
see from, e.g. last panel from another persons perspective.

NATIONALISM AND FUNDAMENTALISM AS THINGS TO MOVE THE ILLETERATE (anoosh)


Can see in Marji as she is moved by nationalism throughout the war
despite seeing herself as educated and leftist, e.g. WE HAVE TO
BOMB BAGHDAD! or THOSE ASSHOLES in reference to the Iraq,
shes gets motivated to hate them
