UNIT 1
In this unit you will study Properties of Materials and Mechanics.
The first topic that you will study in September will be Properties of Materials
as used in industry and the medical field .
To prepare you for EL you will need to revise some of the GCSE work that you
have covered in Physics. This will be from P4 Explaining Motion
Your Task
1. Use the internet to research information for a review article about
replacement joints and the properties of the materials that can be used.
Write a 500 word report or prepare a 5-7 minutes presentation of your
key findings and opinions
2. Answer the attached exam questions

Exam Questions
1.
For many years surgeons have used metal implants to repair broken
bones and joints. It is important to understand how the properties of the
implant materials compare with bone so that comfortable and long-lasting
repairs can be made. The picture shows an X-ray of a hip joint after
surgery to replace the weakened joint with the implant.

The cover is also marked 35 kN. This refers to the load it must be
able to support. 1kN = 1000 N
Calculate the mass that would produce this load using the equation
Force (in N) = mass (in kg) x gravity on Earth (10N/kg).
