Religious Predestination
T

Calvinism The Five Points

Total Depravity
As a consequence of The Fall
everyone is enslaved to sin. All
people by their own faculties are
morally unable to choose to follow
God and be saved because they are,
of their own nature, unwilling to do
so.

Unconditional
election

AKA Predestination: God chooses

from eternity all those he will save
the elect. They are chosen by the
mercy of God alone not dependent
on virtue or faith.

Limited atonement

Irresistible Grace

Jesus was punished in the place of

sinners. Although Jesus could have
atoned for all sinners, only those
elected by God will be atoned for
and they are definitely saved.
When God wants to save someone,
that individual will be saved.

Perseverance of
the Saints

God is sovereign and his will cannot

be frustrated by humans. Those
whom God has called will continue in
faith until the end. Those who fall
away either never had faith or will
return.

People are not by nature

inclined to love God with their
whole heart, mind, or
strength, but rather all are
inclined to serve their own
interests over those of their
neighbour and so reject the
rule of God.
Never properly taught, except
an assurance to those who
seek forgiveness and
salvation that their faith is
not in vain. God is able to
bring to completion everyone
He intends to save.
Calvinists hold that the
atonement is sufficient for all
and efficient for the elect.

The Holy Spirit is able to

overcome all resistance and
make his influence irresistible
and effective.

No resistance
That is going to happen

Devoted Christian to God

goes to hell regardless
Deterministic

Atonement is enough for

everyone but only works
for the elected
No moral sense

The elected will go to

heaven

Arminianism
Condtional predestination

The view that once youre

saved, youre always saved.

You can do as you like once

youve genuinely committed
to God/been converted.

Model
No matter what you do do
good saved

The view that in the end all

people will end up in heaven
(C.S. Lewis and others).
Contends that if God is truly
loving then all people must
be worthy of love and
therefore hell for some
cannot be the end result.

A God who did not want to, or

was unable to save everyone,
was not a God worth
worshipping

A benevolent God must want

to save all humanity

This is the pre-decision on

Gods part to save those who
will repent and believe.

Thus its view is called

conditional predestination,
since the predetermination of
the destiny of individuals is
based on Gods
foreknowledge of the way in
which they will either freely
reject Christ or freely accept
him.
