Job Description

Safe Routes to School Coordinator

Primary Purpose of the Coordinator


This position is responsible for operating as the chief point of contact for the
planning process for the Safe Routes to School Cleveland Municipal School District
Travel Plan (STP), providing a critical link between a hired Ohio Department of
Transportation consultant, the local Safe Routes to School Steering Committee
(Steering Committee), and the school districts central office.
The STP is a planning document that will create recommendations for how: 1)
Transportation and infrastructure can be built to improve walking and biking routes
from home to school and how the Cleveland Municipal School District can adopt
biking routes to school and 2) how the Cleveland municipal School District can
adopt programs that educate, encourage, evaluate and enforce safe walking and
biking to school.
The SRTS coordinator also manages development of sustainability plan for districtwide Safe Routes to school Encouragement activities that have strategic linkages to
existing walking and biking programs at Cleveland Public Health as well as
templates for how to integrate Health Impact Assessment into the Safe Routes to
School Larger School District School Travel Planning Process.
Description of Duties:
Coordination of a Planning Process

Maintain open communication lines among Steering Committee Members and


Stakeholders
Coordinate Steering Committee Meetings
Meet with and support the Consultant team throughout the project
Attend necessary workshops, events and training seminars
Communicate policy, program and other information to SRTS team,
consultant team and school district representatives
Develop an approximate timeline for completion of STP
Schedule a kick-off meeting for the full SRTS Team involving the full STRS
team, key partners, and key stakeholders
Conduct the National Center for STRS Parent survey and Student Travel Tally.
Responsible for distribution, collection and submission of surveys to National
Center for processing
Responsible for communicating survey to school administrators and ability to
provide multiple reminders to local administrators to complete it

Coordinate and attend walk audits with SRTS Team members, school
administrators, local government officials, police officers, elected
representatives and other stakeholders over STRS program implementation
Obtain student location information from district and communicate with
consultant team.
Prioritize countermeasures and develop an action plan with consultant team
Coordinating activities related to youth bicycle and pedestrian safety
education and training

Outreach
Provide public presentations and demonstrations as needed
Coordinate media and press releases
Generate publicity for the kick-off meeting and any related publicity activities
Manage emails, the webpage, and social media (including Facebook, Twitter,
blogs, etc.)
Program Planning
Develop recommendations from the STP to develop a plan for sustainable
district-wide encouragement activities strategic linkages to existing walking
and biking programs at Cleveland Public Health
Program Facilitation
Facilitate implementation of SRTS 5 Es by leadership team in the school
district and with other appropriate entities.
Monitoring the impact of SRTS related activities such as (HIA) Health Impact
Assessment.
Experience
Strong oral and written and communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft office programs
Passion for improving active transportation options.
Experience in grant writing.
Ability to convene and coordinate various groups from many sectors.
Ability to convene and build consensus among various groups.
Education
A Bachelors Degree in public health, education, social work, urban planning, public
administration, or a related field is required.
Note: this is a one year position funded by Ohio Department of Transportation for
the safe routes to school program. Continuation beyond the one year threshold will
be contingent on coordinators ability to execute the program successfully and
acquire additional funding.
Salary: $45,000/year; 18,000 benefits
