PerhapsthebestknownBlackStone,andnowbyfarthemostrevered,istheKabahatMecca.Kabahmeanscubeandthisdescribestheshapeoftheblack
stonestructureonamarblebasewhichstandsinthecentrecourtoftheGreatMosque,MasjidulHaram,atthecentreofMecca.Itstandsabout50feethighby
about35feetwide.Setintotheeasterncorneristhesacredstone,coveredbyanelaboratelyembroideredblackdrape.Asanynonmosleminthetemplewouldbe
slainonsight,andphotographyisgenerallyprohibited,thisstoneisshroudedismystery.However,RufusCamphausenhassucceededintrackingdownthree
accountsofthepilgrimagetoMecca,twoofwhichdocontainphotographs[13].Whattheserevealisapolishedblackstoneofwhichlessthantwofeetisvisible,
setinalarge,solidsilvermount.Thewholeresemblesquitedeliberately,forreasonswhichwillemergethevulvaofthegoddess.Thatmoslemsnowrefertoit
astheHandofAllahdoesnotdiminishtheurgeforallthosewhocompletethepilgrimagetoMeccatotouchorkissthissacredobject.[Smile]
TheBlackStonehaslongsincebeenbrokenandthesilverbandholds
togetherthefragments.Traditionholdsthatitwasameteoriteandthestone
waswhiteincolourwhenitfirstlandedandthenblackened.Thefaithful
