Lesson 1 Chords
1.1 Major diatonic chords

vii is half diminished (has A)

Tonic is I, subdominant is IV and dominant is V

1.2 Minor diatonic chords

vii is diminished (has Ab)

Tonic is I, subdominant is iv (minor) and dominant is V

Lesson 2 - Voicing
1.3 SATB Vocal ranges

1.4 Positions
Root position: Bass = tonic

1.5 Open and close (dis)positions

Close: SAT in less than an octave.

1.6 Between T and B up to a 12th (8+5) is allowed.

1.7 SAT: less than an octave among them
1.8 No voice crossing!
1.9 Doubling: In 7th chord, 8th is doubled and 5th is
omitted

Lesson 3 - Basic progressions

1.10 Harmonic progression chart

Dotted line means that Chord I can go to any of the other.

And almost always, the harmonic progression begins with I in root position.
Goal is I in root position, preceded by V (often) in root position.

1.10.1

Circle of fifths is included

1.11 Substitution
Chords in box are a third apart and are substitutes of the other: ii can
function as sub-dominant and vii0 can function as dominant (due to tritone).
Substitution can be diatonic (inside the key) or chromatic (outside the key)

1.12 Common progressions

I IV V I
I ii V I
I vi ii V I

Lesson 4 - Voice leading

1.13 Principles: common tones and minimum motion
SAT:

Keep common tones: chords at a 4th or 5th have one; at a 3rd or 6th
have two

Or move voice by step (chords at a 2nd )

Or the minimum interval

Bass is root (for now)

Contrary motion if possible
Leading tone in outer voice (S, B)? Resolve to tonic!
Leading tone in inner voice (A, T)? More freedom: tonic or 5th.

1.14 Motion types

Lesson 5 Voice leading practice (12 + 7 + 7 + 4 =

30 min)
I V I and I IV I without common tone.

The leading tone in outer voice must resolve to tonic!!

Now it has common tone in the second motion.

Resolution of V7- Tendency tones:

It has an additional leading tone, or better a tendency tone: the 4 th degree
(7th in the V7) which must resolve thru half step to the 3 rd degree in the
tonic.
And the real leading tone (5th in V7) is supposed to resolve to the tonic, if
possible (not obliged in inner voice). But D jumps too much (a 5 th).

Another example with D jumping one step:

Better motion, but has 3 Tonics and no 5th!!

Common in cadences.
Also valid, though leading tone does not resolve to tonic (not necessary in

inner voice)

If V7 has no 5th, better motion.

IV V (second)
No common tone. The easiest has parallel 5ths and 8ves.
Good example:

Voice leading of chords with a mediant relationship

(mediant is between tonic and dominant)

Lesson 6 Texture types (4 min)

Texture:
Relationship between voices or instruments.
Roles

4 textures in classical music

monophony
polyphony
homorhythmic homophony
melody + accompaniment

Heterophony is not found in classical music.
