bunkisknownasrefuelingasimilaroperationperformedforfillingfueloilintotheshiptanksfromanoutside
sourceisknownasbunkering.

Forexampleanormal800cccar,whichhasengine
of37bhppoweroutput,givesamileageof18kilo
meters/liter,butinashipofengineoutputpower
around10,000bhp,theconsumptionis
approximately25cubicmetersto30cubicmeters
perday.Itmaygoashighas200cubicmetersof
fuel/day.Sotoaccommodatesuchhugeamountof
fuelforalongvoyageof45days,bunkertanksare
designedandlocated.
Yougiveyouanideahowmassivethisvolumeis,
sayifthenormalheavyfueloilisconsideredwhich
hasadensityofroughly930kg/m3,30cubicmeters
wouldworktonearly28metrictonswhichisthe
dailyfuelconsumption.Soyoucanimaginethe
amountofoilrequiredtobepresentonboardin
casetheshipisonamonthlongvoyageofso.
Obviouslytheonlypracticalwaytodeliversuchlargequantitiesofoilonboardtheshipfromthebargeistouse
thearrangementofpipelinesandpumps.Thereisanetworkofpipelinesontheshipaswellasthebargewhich
areconnectedtotheactualtanksdeepbelow.Thevalveswhichcontrolandregulatetheflowoffluidtothese
pipelinesarelocatedonthedeckatconvenientplaces.Youcanseethearrangementofvalvesandpipelinesin
theadjacentfigure.Theyaredistinguishedfromeachotherusingcolourcodingwhichwewilltakeupinalater
article.
