Discuss about any of the foundation of colony.

(Who, how, why, when, what were

the struggles)

After the advent of great colonial ages, England started to establish its
colonies throughout the world. It was just a matter of time before England to set its
eyes on the land rich North America. The major reason why England wanted more
colonies was to gain economic profit, reduce the population of its overpopulated
cities and then to gain a military advantage over its rivals like Spain, France and
Netherlands. This would ultimately prove the supremacy of England over the rest of
the world. But the reasons for the establishment of these colonies was not limited to
these. Various other factors like religious insecurity, socio economic conditions of
English mens, etc. also played an important role in the establishment of the 13
English colonies. Here I present information regarding 6 of the 13 English states that
were established during 1607 to 1733.

Jamestown:
Jamestown was the first English colony in North America. The primary
purpose of James town was to earn profit for London Company, one of the first joint
stock company. The secondary purpose was to claim land of North America based
on the explorations of John Cabot. The charter for the colony was given in 1606 but
the colony itself was founded in 1607.
In 1607, 108 people set sail towards North America. Who are these people?
These were the daring individuals who had a hope to start from scratch and
enhance their life from what it was in England. The believed that they couldnt find
any prosperity in England so they decided to gamble in North America. Even though
the chances for survival was very low, they dared to go into the wild for a dream of
increasing their social standards. After they reached North America, they
established a town and named it Jamestown in respect
The beginning phases of this experiment was harsh. The town was swampy
and insect ridden. And it was estuary for James River. So, the waste they through
into the river polluted the water. All these resulted for high death rate due to which
only 38 individuals survived after a year. Due to the fact that most of the colonist
that came were sons of noblemen they didnt know how to farm and the rest of
them were laborers who couldnt find work in England, so they had lost the habit of
working. This resulted in lack of food which further aided the death rate. The help
they received from Native Americans ended after they started stealing from them.
Captain James smith instigated the rule of he who works not eats not. 400 new
Englishmen who came in the year 1609 were astonished to find the state of
Jamestown. Even they hadnt brought any reinforcement due to which out of 500
colonist only 60 colonists survived after the winter of year 1609 and 1610.
After experiencing all this, the remaining colonists decided to return back
home but there decision changed when reinforcements arrived. In 1612, Adolf Rolfe

created a new form of tobacco by blending the native tobacco with the tobacco
from West Indies. This new tobacco become the reason for survival of Jamestown. It
became its cash crop and soon started to earn profit. Rolfe also eased the tension
with Native Americans by marrying Pocahontas, daughter of Poushatan, a tribe
leader. In this way James town found an economic reason for survival.
