Preferred Series
1. A hose manufacturer has to decide the various diameters of
braided hoses in his manufacturing program. The smallest
hose diameter is to be about 6mm, whereas the largest is
to be about 50mm. As a strategy, the manufacturer
choses to have lesser diameters in the first phase of
production. Suggest suitable hose diameters to cover the
complete range from 6 to 50.
2. A design constraint suggests that the two screws in a
component should be placed between 32 mm and 55 mm
apart.
3. Nails are to be produced between roughly 15 mm and 350
mm long. Use the R10 series to size the various products.

Part-2 Combination Stresses
__________________________________________________________
1. The most critical point of a component made up ofC40
material is subjected to following stresses
1. X-direction: +10N/mm2 to -8N/mm2
2. Y-direction: +12N/mm2 to +5N/mm2
3. In the X-Y plane there is a torsional shear ie, xy which
varies from +8N/mm2 to -8N/mm2
2. The most critical point of a component is subjected to a
triaxial stress system as following principle stresses along
three mutually perpendicular directions:
a. X-direction: +20N/mm2 to +65N/mm2
b. Y-direction: -10N/mm2 to +65N/mm2
c. z-direction: 0 to +50N/mm2
Determine FOS based on Soderbergs Criteria& octahedral
theory if the component is made up of C45 normalised steel.

The expected reliability is 90% and FOS=1.8 assume ground
surface all over. Determine diameter d for following cases
a.
b.
c.
d.

Infinite life where P varies from -150N to +150 N

Finite Life of 105 cycles if P varies from -150N to +150 N
Using Static Approach if P varies from -150N to +150 N
Infinite life where P varies from 0 to +150 N
A rotating steel shaft (ut=1200N/mm2) as shown in the
figure must support a load of 2 kN on an indefinite basis with
a reliability of 999. Determine FOS
3. A steel cantilever as shown in the figure is subjected to
transverse load at its end that varies from 50 N(+) to 150 (-)
and axial load varies from 150 N(-)
To 500 (+). Determine the required diameter at the change
of the cross sectional area for infinite life for FOS=2 Take
ut=560N/mm2 & yt=480N/mm2 Assume machined surface
all over.
4. A cold drawn bar is to withstand a tensile preload of 36.3kN
and a fluctuating tensile load varying from 0 to 72.6 kN. The
bar has a geometric stress concentration factor of 2.02
corresponding to a fillet whose radius is 4.75mm.Determine
