Figure 1
Figure 1 shows the specifications and design of an inductor that employs a ferrite core
with a relative permeability of 3300. The core has a depth of 20 mm. Two air gaps, g1
and g2 are inserted in the inductor. Assume that there is no leakage flux and that the
fringing flux effect is negligible. The rated current of the inductor is 20 A. (0 =
4 107 H/m)

a) EVALUATE and DRAW the magnetic circuit for Figure 1. Labels used must
be described.
[8 marks]
b) CALCULATE the equivalent/total reluctance of the magnetic circuit.
[10 marks]
c) DESIGN the number of turns N that is required so that the air gap flux
densities in air-gap 1 is g1 = 0.1 T, and in air-gap 2 is g2 = 0.2 T.
[9 marks]
d) DESCRIBE the magnetic behaviour of a ferromagnetic material and the
concept of magnetic core saturation. You should also use diagrams such as
magnetic domains and magnetization curve in your descriptions.

Figure 2
Figure 2 shows a 277-V, 50-Hz single-phase generator supplying a load through a
transmission line with a pair of transformers at either ends of the transmission line.
Transmission line impedance, line = 1.5 + 10 /phase
Load impedance, load = 0.4536.87 /phase

a) DETERMINE the transmission line losses, load voltage and efficiency of

single phase power system.
[15 marks]
b) One of the methods of improving the efficiency of the power system is to
reduce the transmission line losses. FIND the transformer turns ratio so that
the power system efficiency can be improved to 80%. Assume that
transformers 1 and 2 have the same turns ratio.
[7 marks]
c) In a real power system, would the efficiency be lower or higher than that
calculated in part (a)? EXPLAIN your answer.

QUESTION 3 [35 marks]

A 180 V, 2000 rpm DC shunt motor with compensating windings has an armature
resistance of 0.2 and an adjustable field resistance which may be varied from 200 to
450. There are 1500 turns per pole on the shunt field winding. The magnetization
curve of the motor was performed at 2000 rpm and is as shown in Figure 3. The motor
is assumed to have no mechanical losses. The motor is supplied from a constant
voltage source at 180 V with an input current of 100 A.
a) Based on the information given above, DETERMINE:
i. the minimum and maximum field currents available for this motor
[4 marks]
ii. the range of motor speeds for this motor
[16 marks]
iii. the range of output torque of the motor
[5 marks]
b) Based on the answers obtained in part a), answer the following:
i. Do you think the motor is capable of supplying enough mechanical
power to drive a 25 hp load? JUSTIFY your answer.

[5 marks]

ii. If the compensating windings of the motor were removed, would the
minimum speed of the motor obtained in part a)ii be increased or
decreased? JUSTIFY your answer.
