Novell CLP Academy

Lab Setup Instructions.

In preparation for the Novell 3101 course, this document looks at system setup
instructions as well as any modifications to tasks performed in the labs based on using
Windows XP as the host operating system.
To begin, these instructions assume the knowledge necessary in installing a base level
Windows XP SP3 installation. It should be noted that the minimum machine
requirements include:
Current level processor
2 GB RAM
30 GB of free disk space
SVGA video supporting at least 1024x768 resolution
Obviously the faster the processor, as well as memory exceeding the 2GB will only
improve the learning experience.
VMWare Player installation
This course is based upon running two virtual guest machines in a virtualization mode.
The recommendation of the course materials, is to utilize VMWare Player. This is due
to the fact that VMWare Player is available free of charge off the VMWare website. If
you have access to VMWare Workstation, it would be recommended to use that in place
of VMWare Player, due to the additional capabilities of Workstation, such as the
snapshot capability. However for the purpose of this document, we will focus on Player.
To begin, download the current version of VMWare Player from the VMWare website,
www.vmware.com . At the time of this writing, the product can be accessed by clicking
Support and Downloads, selecting All Downloads, and VMWare Player under the
Desktop Downloads heading. Follow the instructions to access the download.
Once downloaded to the destination of your choice, double clicking the MSI to launch
the installer. The defaults can be accepted for the installation. The screenshots are
provided for you reference.

Once the installation process has completed, restart the the host computer by clicking the
applicable button (Restart Now).
Download the course materials
You will next download the course materials. The links for these materials will be found
within the training portal. Items that will be needed include the virtual machine images
for DA1 and DA-SLED and the source installation DVDs (SLES 11 and SLED 11).
Once all the items have been downloaded, create the following directories:
c:\vms\3101
c:\isos
Needless to say, move the source installation ISOs into the the c:\isos directory.
Extract the zip files for the 3101 VMs into the c:\vms\3101 directory. Confirm that

under this directory path that the parent directories for each virtual machine (DA1 and
DA-SLED) exists, so that configuration files don't become overwritten.
Configure VMs within VMWare Player
To establish the lab environment, launch VMWare Player.

Click the link for Open a Virtual Machine. This will present a browse window. Navigate to the
c:/vms/3101/DA1 directory (or alternate path you configured). Double click the VMWare
configuration file for DA1. This file may be named Clone of DA1

You may be presented with a dialog box indicating that the virtual machine may already be in use.
Click the button for Take Ownership

This will return the Player window for the virtual machine. In order to reduce the need for accessing
the physical DVD/CD, it is recommended for the virtual machine to address the ISO image for it's
removable media. To set this configuration, click Edit Virtual Machine Settings.

This will display settings for hardware components that will be served up to the virtual guest operating
system. Click the icon for CD/DVD. On the right pane, click the radio button for Use ISO image
file. Click the Browse button and navigate to the SLES 11 ISO image file. Click OK.

The virtual guest for DA1 is now configured.

Repeat these steps for DA-SLED. Clearly you would need to select the appropriate path to the DASLED VM configuration file. This would be C:/vms/3101/DA-SLED based on the recommended path.
Adjust this path accordingly if you chose an alternate destination. For the final step of configuring the

virtual CD/DVD, again you would browse to the SLED 11 ISO image file as opposed to the SLES 11
ISO.
At this point both virtual machines would be configured and ready to use within the labs.
