Spring is on its way

Food Bank
Many have been contributing to the food bank at The Shop at
Sherfield on Loddon, but few have possibly realised the extent to
which this has been going on.
Ken says that up to Christmas, 465Kg. of food have been sent to the
food bank at Basingstoke, providing 1,107 meals with 3,054 people
being fed. This is a tremendous effort and shows the generosity of
the people of Sherfield and the surrounding area. A big thank you to
everyone who has contributed.
Page 10

Pastoral Letter
One of the hardest things in life is to let go, to trust others, and to trust
God. We like to be in control, to make our own destiny, and to model our
own lives. We may say I got the job because I was the right person at
the right place at the right time. But who placed us in the right place at
the right time? We may say it was destiny, but I prefer to say it was
the hand of God. As one gets older and we reflect on the past, one can
identify times when no amount of personal organisation could have produced the course of events that has taken place. Sometimes we call it
serendipity, such as the accidental discovery of penicillin by Alexander
Fleming in 1928, or the invention of the microwave oven by Percy Spencer in 1945. Think how much both these discoveries have not only
changed lives, but saved lives. Can we see the hand of God in action
here?
About 150 years ago there was a family named Shaw who sailed to
Cape Town with the intention of entering the interior as a missionary.
They were discouraged by the Boers who gave them no assistance.
Every door seemed closed. They purchased an ox-cart and decided to
go wherever the ox led
them.
They meandered 300
miles over the pathless
veldt, putting their entire
trust in God. One day,
on a distant plain they
saw a company of native travellers approaching them. They were
indigenous Khoikhoi
people, or aboriginal herders on their way to Cape Town, seeking a missionary. There in the wilderness they met, and God began His mighty
work among these African tribes.
Serendipity, or the work of God? I prefer to think the latter.

Church Bell Ringing A Community Activity

Sherfields bell ringers are looking for more people to join
us in this enjoyable, sociable, and traditional English
activity. Neither musical ability nor previous experience
is needed (although lapsed ringers are very welcome!).
Our band ranges from their early twenties to retirement
age and, as bell ringing has never been limited to
religious events, includes some people who do not
attend church. We practice on Thursday evenings and
ring regularly for Sunday morning services.
If you think you might like to join us, please call Chris Ford (01256
470174) to arrange a visit to the tower.

Ted Garside
The village was saddened by the death in November of Edward (Ted)
Garside, who, with Jean his wife, lived for many years at King's Barn,
behind the cricket pavilion before moving to Longbridge Close.
The Garsides, with sons James and Thomas, settled in Sherfield on
Loddon when Ted was appointed finance director of the AA group of
companies, serving with distinction throughout an unsettled and
especially demanding period in the history of the organisation. Ted is
remembered with respect by colleagues as a consummate
professional, and with affection as a thoroughly decent man.
"Bean counting", Ted called it. But his accountancy skills were matched
by shrewd business analysis and were to prove valuable outside as
well as inside the AA -- he advised on the restructuring of the finances
of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, was a founding donor and
financial adviser to The Anvil, and was closely involved with St
Leonard's Church and village events, including the summer fair.
Music and golf were Ted's passions. He was a member of Basingstoke
Golf Club for more than 20 years, and will be sorely missed by the
"veterans" with whom he regularly played. Missed, too, by his
companions on frequent visits to the Concorde jazz club in Eastleigh
and, closer to home, to all manner of concerts at The Anvil. His musical
tastes were truly catholic.

STRATFIELD SAYE PARISH REPORT

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and I take the opportunity to
wish everyone a Happy New Year.
After the resignation of Richard Phillips from the Parish Council the
Councillors co-opted Ian Pearson, who lives in Green Lane, to fill the
vacant position. He has already helped the Parish Council with valuable
information on the broadband provision in Stratfield Saye, which we all
know is extremely bad and is researching on their behalf any solutions
which could improve the situation in the future. It seems ludicrous that a
community living about 7 miles from 2 large towns such as Reading and
Basingstoke should be virtually left in the dark ages with inadequate
broadband with serious consequences to anyone trying to run a
business in the area. As we get further information well let residents
know.
We have now heard from Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council about
the Stratfield Saye 154 bus service. It will stay as is until the end of
March when it will be reduced to once a week on a Thursday. In
these days of cost cutting our representations to the Borough Council
that they could not isolate a community did manage to save one of the
services. So please use it often so they have no reason to stop it for
underuse!!
The Parish Council again supported the 3rd Stratfield Saye Christmas
lunch for residents which was held on Monday 22 nd December 2014 and
enjoyed by all. Unfortunately as it was held later this year a few people
could not attend so well be agreeing the date for next year early to
ensure everyone can come. So do come along this year as it is a very
happy community get-together!!
Dont forget to come along to the monthly coffee mornings on the first
Monday of each month next 2nd February in the Village Hall at
11.00a.m. again a great opportunity for a chat with neighbours and
friends and a chance to tell either myself or Councillor Nixon of any
concerns you might have.
The next Parish Council meeting is on 2 nd March 2015 at 7.30p.m - all
are welcome it is only with your participation that the Parish Council
hear of any problems or concerns in the Parish.

Dont forget its Eating Disorders Awareness Week

(EDAW) 23-27th February 2015.

As we approach the end of our 25th Anniversary year, we look back on

the support that weve provided since 1989, through our Helplines,
UK-wide support groups and online services and forward to the
challenges ahead in continuing to change the way people think and talk
about eating disorders, improve the way services and treatment are
provided, and empowering individuals to believe their eating disorder
can be beaten.
For our Sock-it to eating disorders fundraising campaign on Friday
27 February, our fundraisers and supporters will be wearing silly socks,
raising awareness of eating disorders and funds to support Beat.
We're grateful for the support of leading internet
and home shopping company N Brown, owner of
SimplyBe and Jacamo, and celebrity support
including John Stapleton and Canadian comedian
Katherine Ryan.
For further information, please contact the Beat
Press Office: 0300 123 7061 or email media@beat.co.uk.
We have case studies available - and may have some in your area. We
welcome your interest in this awareness week and look forward to
working with you.

Warning Slippery Roads

Our beautiful area has a large number of
scenic country lanes. At this time of year they
can get covered with mud, water, ice or a
combination of all of the above and more.
There have been a number of recent
instances of cyclists skidding on ice and mud
fortunately without major damage or other road users involved. Please
be careful and considerate of others when using the narrow lanes
whatever means of transport youre using.

A Basingstoke beauty queen has been grafting hard to be crowned Miss
Hampshire 2015.

is absolutely amazing to have reached this stage.
Nicola runs a beauty salon in Sherfield-on-Loddon D&D Beauty following

TEXT FOR THE MONTH Pauls letter to the Romans 8 : 37-39

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who
loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels
nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither
height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The NIV Bible

Prayer for the Month.

Our loving God and Saviour of the world we praise for your great goodness to us, your love which redeemed us in Christ and which has
welcomed us as your people and has called us into your family. We have
no claim on your goodness, no right to your love for we so often fail you,
and yet you still value the service we offer to you. Despite our faults, we
know that you are always with us inviting us to show your love in word
and deed and to reveal your gracious purpose for all. Loving God we
truly want to serve you better and we come to you knowing how we so
often fail you. Have mercy on us in this new year and, by your grace,
help us to walk more closely with you in the days ahead.
In your name we pray. Amen
Prayer Points for February
Pray for those who put their lives at risk to serve others
especially those who go to West Africa to treat people
suffering from the Ebola virus. Pray that the attempts to
end the problems of Ebola may produce success.
Pray for all suffering from the effects of the many recent
natural disasters and help us not to forget the long term devastation
they leave. Pray especially for all who have been caught in the forest
fires in Australia.
Pray for peace in all countries where violence and terror cause so
many to live in fear each day especially for Syria and Iraq. Pray for
leaders to take forward the peace processes in these countries
Give thanks for the signs of Spring as we enjoy flowers appearing
again in our gardens and along the hedgerows.

8th Duke of Wellington of Stratfield Saye

Arthur Valerian Wellesley 2nd July 1915 - 31st December 2014 aged 99yrs.
Also 9th Duke Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain and Duke of the Victory in Portugal.
Arthur Valerian Wellesley was born in Rome on July 2nd
1915, the centenary year of his great-great-grandfathers
victory over the French. His father was Lord Gerald
Wellesley, the third son of the 4th Duke, an author and
diplomat who later qualified as an architect and
succeeded as the 7th Duke in 1943. Valerians mother
was Dottie Ashton, a wealthy industrialists daughter and
poet who married her husband in 1914 and published a
volume of letters from the poet WB Yeats and another
containing her letters to him after his death.
Although Valerian wanted to go straight into the Army
from Eton, his father sent him to read history and languages at New
College, Oxford, where he was a member of the Bullingdon Club; at the
same time he enjoyed London society, dancing with suitable girls at grand
balls and less suitable ones in subterranean nightclubs. As a result he failed
his finals and was sent to a London crammer, run by an attractive widow,
and then to France to learn French. He was commissioned into the Royal
Horse Guards, which taught him sword, lance and revolver drill, tent
pegging and other cavalry exercises. Before embarking for Palestine in
1940, he paid an Indian at Liverpool docks to tattoo his regiments emblem
on his left arm. During World War 2 he served in the Royal Horse Guards in
France and Belgium and was awarded the Military Cross.
The Duke was married to Diana Ruth McConnel in 1943, who many
residents of the benefice will
remember as the Duchess of
Wellington. She died in 2010.
Later he joined the Household
Cavalry serving in Cyprus,
Germany and Spain, finally
retiring from the army as a
brigadier in 1968.

The 8th Duke and Duchess

Page 30

He then turned his attention to

the family estates which were
in an unsatisfactory state
since his father had handed
over the running of the main

holdings to the government in the

hope of preserving them
The plan to modernise the Wellington
estates included opening to the public
Stratfield Saye, the 17th century house
with 7,500 acres which had been
given by the nation to the 1st Duke,
and the creation of a 700-acre country
park. In the
course of 40 years, it was estimated that he
planted more than one million trees, and was still
personally planting at the Jubilee (right). He was
still very sharp pointing out the flag flying upside
down much to the chagrin of the vicar and some
senior military officers present.
His death came just six months before the 200 th
anniversary of the 1815 Battle of Waterloo which
saw Napoleon and the French defeated at the
hands of the 1st Duke of Wellington.
Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter, who is chairman of
Waterloo 200, the body overseeing the anniversary celebrations, said
that despite his increasing frailty, the 8 th Duke remained interested and
involved in plans right up to the end.
It is sad that he did not make the 200 th anniversary,
particularly the service of remembrance at St. Pauls
Cathedral on June 18th.
The 8th Duke is succeeded by his son Arthur Charles
Valerian, born 19th August 1945, and his wife, formally
Princess Antonia of Prussia, as the 9 th Duke and
Duchess. In the picture (left) he is seen as Chairman
of the Council of Kings
College, London, 2009.
The 9th Duke and Duchess
have five children, the
eldest of whom, Arthur Wellesley, now
becomes Marquess of Douro. He is married
to Jemma Kidd, and they have twins (right)
and a younger son.

pleased to hear from the Borough that we have been successful in
obtaining funds from Section 106 developer contributions and hope to use
this grant to refurbish the Liddell Hall kitchen.

E-CIGARETTES

provisions of the Health Act 2006. The Management Committee has
recently decided to extend this non-smoking policy to include electronic
cigarettes. Please note that there is a designated smoking area outside the

SOLFolk
On Saturday 27th June 2015 the Friends of Sherfield Village Hall are
planning a one day Folk Festival. They hope to have Morris dancing in the

local brewed beer, musician workshops and anything else they can
organise! Starting mid morning and finishing in the evening with a grand
ceilidh with the Diatonics. Details to follow over the next few months. As
they will need volunteers to help, both on the day and beforehand, if you

News from the Beats - February 2015

Shed and Outbuilding Burglaries have started to decrease after the
Christmas period. Three offenders have been arrested. One
narrowly avoided a Prison sentence, another has been bailed pending
sentencing (on an unrelated incident) and has been placed on electronically
monitored curfew to prevent further offending. The third is still awaiting their
time in court. This is a great result and shows our communities and the
offenders that we are taking these incidents seriously

NWR Report
We celebrated Christmas with an informal party at a members
house. After mulled wine and mince pies we did a fun quiz,
followed by seasonal readings from authors such as Pam Ayres, Gervase
Phinn and Flora Thompson. After Christmas we had a meal at the Four
Horseshoes which was lovely after all the hub-bub of pre-Christmas events
and Christmas itself.
Following on from this we held our annual planning meeting to organise our
programme for 2015. We have planned to hold our usual favourites such as
the evening ramble, safari supper, play reading and music evening as well as
meetings on the theme for this year, Democracy, Liberty and Human Rights
to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta in
1215. We have therefore arranged to hold a debate on Rights versus
Responsibility and another meeting on Freedom of the Press. Our country
theme evening will be Japan which will include Japanese food, Japanese Art
and Design and talks on various aspects of the country. More light-hearted
meetings will be about meditation/alternative treatments, technology and
social media, and our favourite things.
We always welcome new members. For further information, please call me
on 882106.

Reported by Ilene Iles
Our Christmas Meeting at the beginning
of December was presided over by
Evelyn Holdaway. Jerusalem was sung
and the usual reports given by the
Officers. Evelyn then asked Members to support the Meeting
in Wyevale Garden Centre on January the 15th to celebrate the
handover to the Loddon Group of the Centenary Baton which
will visit every Group of WIs in the country and beyond. The
Business Meeting was followed by a sing-song of Carols and
Christmas songs, amusing reading by Tess Morris and Glenda
Holder and a quiz. (Our Speaker was unable to attend.) We
then enjoyed a most delicious tea and the raffle was drawn.
As in the last two years, our January Meeting commenced at
12 noon and Members were able to visit our Bring and Buy
Stall before partaking of the soups and sandwiches provided by
the Members of the Committee. The Business Meeting
followed, presided over by Glenda Holder and final details
regarding the handover of the above-mentioned Baton were
announced.
Members were asked to cast their votes for the National
Resolutions which will be taken to the National Centenary
Annual Meeting of the W.I. in the Royal Albert Hall in June.
The Business Meeting closed at 1.40 p.m. and we then enjoyed
a choice of two desserts made by Tess Morris, cups of tea and
cake and the draw of the raffle before heading home in the
daylight.

FEBRUARY 2015 AT 12 NOON SO, NO MEETING

Noddol Players Latest Play - review by Nomis Esaob

Murder Most Foul
Well I wasnt sure of what to
make of this one. At first I was
thinking everyone involved
should be thoroughly
ashamed of themselves. The
acting was dreadful, the
timing was off, the prompting
needed prompting, the sets
were not (obviously not
enough hard hats to go
round), and as for the safe,
well whats the opposite of
safe? (Was that Thing from the Addams Family in there? I couldn't find the
credit). Even the author wrote under a nom d plume.
However what seemed initially to be a total farce was in fact a total farce
or should that be tour de force. Having realised the bad acting was good
acting and the good acting was bad acting the bad acting shone through. I
imagine its very difficult for good actors to act badly but the bad actors
were clearly very good actors as they pulled it off brilliantly.
A play about a play could easily have been confusing but not in this case.
Play On by Rick Abbott was a story about an am-dram societys attempt
to put on a play. Four days before the plays debut the author was busy
rewriting it and some lovely performances highlighted the frustration of
cast and director. Act two led us into the dress rehearsal
Cast
where even the dresses needed rehearsal, and I loved that
Mark Adams
wig. By act three we were all ready for opening night. The
Pete Francis
audience was warmed up and loving it and the cast acting
Steve Schollar
Alice Grundy
accordingly.
All in all everyone involved, and there were a lot of them,
should be thoroughly pleased with themselves. The audience
loved it and went out happy. What more can you say.
The Loddon Players continue to uphold the fine tradition of
amateur dramatics. Make sure you dont miss the next
production, places seem to fill up quickly.
Spring 2015 production (16/17/18 April) at Sherfield Village
Hall will be "LUCKY SODS" by John Godber.

The first meeting for 2015 began with fish and chips for everyone as
we did not have a Christmas party and the members enjoyed this
instead.
Unfortunately we were unable to have the video and talk about the
war graves in France and Belgium due to a technical problem. We
had our Christmas meal at The Longbridge Mill on the 1st December
which is now a distant memory.

...
thank you so much!

On the 20th December forty seven people travelled by coach beyond

Guildford to the nationally renowned Nativity play at Wintershall.
It was a stunning sight, on a clear night, to see Joseph, with Mary on a
donkey, coming towards us across the fields. Even more stunning
was the angel who really did seem to appear to the shepherds from
the sky!
As we moved to the vast Barn, the music, the script, the
costumes and the real baby left everyone enthralled as the story
unfolded.
So our grateful thanks to the Loddon Valley Link for its generous
contribution to the overall cost; it was hugely appreciated.

Praying for Gods Purpose

The Ministry Team have decided that, during the Interregnum we
should be meeting for prayer specifically praying for Gods purpose
and direction to be made clear in this matter and for guidance for our
Representatives who will make this appointment.
Therefore, beginning on 7th February we will meet in the Church Room
at 9.00 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month.
We will ensure there is always someone there to lead the
session. The idea is that we should drop in at any time between 9.00
and 10.00 and stay just as long as you wish. We hope that as many
people as possible will support this; it is an essential part of the waiting
time.

Talking Health
We are North Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group and our job is to
plan and buy your local healthcare services. We work closely with GP
practices, pharmacies and other healthcare professionals to give you the
best possible service.
Here is the first of our short hints, tips and ideas about how to better look
after yourself, your family and your neighbours.
Feeling Under the Weather?
Most of us feel a little under the weather from time to time, especially in the
winter. Aches, pains, runny nose, sore throat, headaches they happen to
the best of us.
Whats the best way to deal with feeling like this? Tell your local
pharmacist all about it!
Were fortunate to have a good network of pharmacies ready and willing to
give sound advice and help for minor ailments.
A quick visit to your local pharmacy is easy and can be the cheapest way
to obtain exactly the help you need. You can even have a private chat if
you wish, so you dont have to broadcast your aches and pains to the
whole shop.
So pop in and see your pharmacist when you feel under the weather.
Look after yourself this winter.
Hitting the Cold Spots
Hampshire County Council is providing help for those who are having
problems keeping their homes warm this winter. They have a team of
friendly advisors who give practical help for all sorts of problems, from
broken or no heating to the best energy plan to choose for you and your
family.
So if you need assistance with keeping warm or you know someone who
does, call 0800 804 8601 or email staywarm@environmentcentre.com
You and your family need to be warm to stay healthy. This service is
funded by Hampshire County Council Adult Services and Public Health
Departments, working with local charity the Environment Centre. Carbon
monoxide detectors have been donated by Southern Gas Networks.
(Continued on page 49)

Page 48

(Continued from page 48)

A Clinical Commissioning Group is a group of GP practices working

together to provide better health care in their particular geographical
area. The groups are linked by their close locality and work in a
joined-up way with other health and social care professionals.
The NHS North Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group brings
together the combined expertise of 20 local GP practices, acting on
behalf of 216,000 patients covering the north of Hampshire. Providing
the right health care, in the right place, at the right time and at
the right price is what drives North Hampshire Clinical
Commissioning Group.
Our role is to commission (in other words buy) what is needed for our
patients. The GP groups will have budgetary responsibility for making
those decisions.
At the heart of the new Clinical Commissioning Groups is
the empowerment of patients to influence decision making.
Patients are being given the role of having a large say in not only their
own healthcare but how they can influence how the local NHS
evolves.
